A Very Frosty Kristmas In 2010!

It's been six months since an eight minute showreel called Mortal Kombat: Rebirth sent speculative shockwaves throughout the online gaming community and MK fanbase [full story].

Reinventing the successful fighting franchise without authorized association; [MK: Rebirth] was actually one of many examples of independent productions borrowing from well known intellectual properties -- a practice used commonly to demonstrate, or practice, skills and techniques within familiar creative parameters. Just in time for the silly season, a new player has entered the demo arena to offer a decidedly lighter take on the MK property, a loving parody presented as a festive mock commercial.

Frosty Kristmas was directed by Manny Nickpour for his Netherlands based company, Hadoken Productions. The scene, filmed in a single night, was inspired by behind-the-scenes peeks at sequences from the 1997 platformer, Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero, as well as staple techniques of 1970s genre cinema. Nickpour is no stranger to filming Mortal Kombat, either.
A longtime fan of the series, he created a stir in 2008 with the release of two fake teaser trailers designed to recapture the mystique of the series ahead of what would eventually be announced as Mortal Kombat versus DC Universe.

Some years ago I was disappointed that the whole Mortal Kombat feeling was gone. I made two fake [teaser trailers] and never talked about it... Maybe it was not so nice to do, but it pumped up the whole MK feeling that was almost lost on the internet sites. I'm sorry if I shocked people with it. I did it with good intention.

I'm glad to see that Mortal Kombat is going back to its roots. Ever since I saw the first arcade version of MK1, me, and almost everyone I knew, became a MK fan all the way. Boys or girls, [it] didn't matter you know. Friends at school telling lies about a made up special move or fatality, then all of a sudden the teacher comes in between and doesn't know what the hell the kids are talking about. Or [lending] a friend your MK game and getting it back the next year because of all stupid reasons.

The Darker, Reinvented and Look to La Luna fake trailers created a lot of excitement and confusion within an information vacuum. This time, efforts have been more forthcoming with the nature of the material, and focused on a complete concept. Lengths taken to create the finished video before Christmas reveal the dedication these fans have to the brand, as well as their aspirations for connecting with NetherRealm Studios.

The "Frosty-Commercial" was made on the 23rd of December 2010 in Amsterdam at 3 O'clock in the morning by me, one other friend and the guy who got freezed. All the motion (camera shaking/movements) in the camera was done later in post because I was paying attention [to] the camera, and playing the character Sub-Zero at the same time. Later there was the editing and visual effects that I did. The audio was done by Azad Aslani as we communicated via internet from Amsterdam (the Netherlands) to Leipzig (Germany). Everything was actually done in the same night because we wanted it to be on internet before Christmas.

We surely would love to do other digital shorts, with more time, budget, support and also with other characters beside the stereotypical characters Scorpion and Sub-Zero.

Many thanks go out to Manny Nickpour (aka; ) for sharing his work and talking to Mortal Kombat Online. You can learn more about Hadoken Productions at the official website. Be sure, also, to read MKO's Holiday message and have a Happy New Year as we countdown to the release of Mortal Kombat in 2011!

GameStop Releases Mortal Kombat (2011) Desktop Widget
There is now an official Mortal Kombat desktop widget, which has been released as a GameStop exclusive. From this widget, content from the official Mortal Kombat site is available, including several images and all of the trailers that have been shown up to this date. Right now, two characters are available – Scorpion and Sub-Zero – with four more locked slots prominently displayed, presumably there will be at least four more characters to be added later.

Happy Holidays From Mortal Kombat Online!

As 2010 draws to a close we look back on a year that Mortal Kombat and Mortal Kombat Online have seen a great number of changes. It turned out to be a very eventful year for both the site and the gaming series we cover.

In April we witnessed the birth of Netherrealm Studios at Warner Bros. The Mortal Kombat team's years of dedication and hard work paid off when after being purchased by the entertainment giant they were granted their very own development studio named after the iconic Mortal Kombat series. We here at MK Online know the team will soar to new heights under this banner.

June was perhaps one of the most memorable months in the long history of the series. On June 8th, the community was rocked by the appearance of a project called Mortal Kombat: Rebirth, a new live action take on the series. At first it seemed like it was a legitimate project in development, as it featured notable Hollywood stars, but it turned out to be only a movie pitch. Whether or not we will ever see more on it, the video will not soon be forgotten and has even been commented on by members of Netherrealm Studios themselves. Just two days later, perhaps to quell rumors MK: Rebirth was Mortal Kombat 9, the official website and trailer for the game that will simply be titled Mortal Kombat were revealed. A return to the 2D plane and a recreation of the events of MK1-MK3, it was a time of great excitement for fans of the series.

Since that time we have been witness to one of the most polished and deep looking Mortal Kombat games in recent memory. With incredible attention to detail and a promise to bring the series back to the forefront of the gaming world, the game due out this coming Spring has impressed nearly every major gaming site. As coverage continues on into 2011, we will continue to unveil the roster and inner workings of this sure-hit game.

2010 was just as changing for Mortal Kombat Online as well. On Halloween we revamped our Staff, including the promotion of myself to Webmaster many new faces were added. I would like to thank my fellow staff members and everyone who continues to visit this site, making it the most visited MK site on the internet for another year. As some of you know, Mortal Kombat Online launched as MK5.org back in 1998 and Christmas is more than just a holiday to us, it is also an anniversary. This Christmas makes 12 years we have been online and we would again like to thank everyone who has contributed to this community over those last years. Please check out our About Us page if you aren't familiar with our history, it's a good read. We have ambitious plans for 2011 and I hope you will remain with us as we continue to grow.

In the spirit of the season, we are offering redemption codes for the recently released UMK3 on iOS. If you are interested in winning this prize, simply follow us on Twitter and retweet the contest announcement. We have several other prizes to give away as well as these codes, including official Mortal Kombat headbands, buttons, t-shirts and even signed copies of Mortal Kombat games! In addition: Posting in this thread will award you with 5 dragon points for your first post. See you on Twitter, and a very merry holiday season to MK fans everywhere!

MKast Episode #2 Part 4 Revealed!

Netherrealm Studios has released the fourth and final part of Episode #2 of the MKast featuring development team members Paulo Garcia, Hector Sanchez, Hans Lo, John Edwards and Brian LeBaron.

The episode begins with discussion about enhanced special moves, showing off many of the enhanced versions of character specials such as Sub-Zero's ice beam, Johnny Cage's double green bolt toss and Sektor's homing missile. These enhanced specials make use of the super meter, and therefore are not the same as the "pro moves" present in MK vs. DC Universe. Also shown is a basic concept for a Tutorial Mode, designed to teach players in ins and outs of how their favorite characters play.

Also shown is the gameplay debut of Sonya, confirmed last month in Russia's Igromania, during the discussion about dashes. Sonya retains a cartwheel type kick that was present in her moveset during the last generation of games. It is also explained you can cancel out of dashes, as well as utilize wake-up special moves to escape from being cornered, two shown were Scorpion using his teleport and Johnny Cage countering with his flip kick.

Though this ends the "episode 2" series of MKasts, we fully expect more of these so continue to use Twitter and ask your questions to the MK team!

PSX Extreme Magazine Reveals Sindel!

The January 2011 issue of Polish magazine PSX Extreme have published the exclusive first look of the Edenian Queen Sindel confirming her presence in the upcoming Mortal Kombat.

Sindel is shown in a revealing outfit which seems to merge both her Deception Primary and Alternate costumes and is shown performing her Star Screamer special.

Also present in the magazine is a new arena which is of a lush terrain with a waterfall in the distance. Most notable about this stage are two statues which rather resemble both General Reiko and the Demi-God Rain which bares the possibility of a new Warrior's Shrine.

Other images within the article show characters like Ermac and Jax along with a very battle-damaged Sonya.

Upon translation of the article we will update this story accordingly.

Issue 161 of the magazine which wields Sub-Zero and Kratos on it's cover is available on Poland Newstands now!

Shang Tsung Featured in Latest ScrewAttack Death Battle!

The folks over at ScrewAttack have released the second episode in a new series of versus videos entitled "Death Battle", this one featuring Mortal Kombat's resident sorcerer and original boss Shang Tsung!

The series's purpose is to match two characters from different franchises against one another and determine the winner. Tsung's opponent turns out to be Akuma from Street Fighter fame. Each character is given a short biography before a staged fight is held, this one taking place in the Mortal Kombat 3 stage The Temple. The highly edited video features both characters performing custom moves, such as Shang Tsung being able to use his sword and regen his health in the 2D plane. The fight is close, but in the end Shang Tsung falls to Akuma. The reasoning given by the hosts is that Shang never seems to actually win, despite his grandeur and therefore would be unaccustomed to accomplishing a goal such as winning a match against Akuma.

Thanks to Bryan from ScrewAttack for letting us know about this video!

Fatality Friday - Johnny Cage: In Your Face

For today's Fatality Friday video we have another comical issue featuring several members of Netherrealm Studios commenting on what they would say to Johnny Cage to put the egomaniacal superstar in his place.

Several members of the team thought it would be impossible, given his personality. Others remarked they would make fun of his poorly grossing movie Ninja Mime, or the fact he dies in most every Mortal Kombat game. His character was identified by more than one team member as "douche" and included a likening him to the popular Jersey Shore archetype that has become prevalent in society.

Johnny however remains unphased. The video is spliced with gameplay featuring Cage dealing out the damage to his opponents, using his signature taunts such as "I make this look easy", "I'm so pretty!" and "Money shot!" while he makes short work of his would-be detractors. Cage will no doubt have something to say about this himself on his official Twitter account.

Click here to watch the video on Youtube; we hope to have a downloadable version of this outtake some time later.

3D Remake of Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 Coming to iPhone!

Know Your Mobile recently announced an iPhone version of Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 featuring the classic 2D gameplay but with all new 3D visuals.

Know Your Mobile confirms that while the visuals are remade in 3D, the classic gameplay from Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 remains along with classic characters like Scorpion and Sub-Zero as well as the much loved finishing moves that are a staple of the series.

The controls are reminiscent of the iPhone version of Street Fighter IV with on-screen buttons and simplified controls. There are two dedicated "special move" buttons, for instance, as opposed to the traditional combination of directions and attack buttons for character specials.

As of now, however, the iPhone remake features only 13 characters, two of which are unplayable bosses. But on the bright side there are a number of game modes to choose from. Other than the standard Arcade Mode, there is a Survival Mode and, perhaps the most interesting, a mode called Shao Karnage which allows the player to control the tyrant Shao Kahn. There is of course a Versus Mode but unfortunately it is limited to local Wi-Fi and Bluetooth rather than a full featured online mode.

Check out some footage of the game in action:

Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 is due out sometime in December from EA Mobile.

Update: Dec. 14, 2010 – Check out the attached screens, thanks to this thread over at TouchArcade, as well as fellow MK fansite TRMK.

Update: Dec. 14, 2010 – Furthermore, there is an official Mortal Kombat Facebook page update to confirm this games’ release for the iPhone and iPod touch!

Kratos Confirmed For Mortal Kombat at VGAs!
THERE WILL BE WAR

After months of rumors and this last week's revelations, Kratos from God of War fame has finally been officially confirmed to appear in the first quarter 2011 game! As previously announced, a new playable character would be revealed on Spike TV's annual VGA show.

Extended Kratos Trailer

In a new trailer featuring a fight between icons Scorpion and Sub-Zero, Shao Kahn oversees the combat in a fiery new arena also debuting in this trailer. Kahn issues his trademark "Finish Him!" after Scorpion defeats his rival, but before he can Sub-Zero is yanked off screen. Scorpion stands puzzled as Kratos steps onto the field, flaming swords in hand. Scorpion regains his composure and fires a spear towards Kratos, which he blocks with his weapons. We will undoubtedly see more of Kratos's in game fighting style, special moves and fatalities at a later date, but this confirmation seals his appearance in the Mortal Kombat world.

Update: We have added the Extended trailer for stream and download, click and enjoy!

Kratos in Mortal Kombat?

There have been long persistent rumors of the Sony exclusive Kratos from God of War fame making an appearance in next year's Mortal Kombat game, but most wrote these off as wishes of fans who wanted to mix two brutal worlds together. Kratos has already stepped inside the world of fighting games once, appearing in Soulcalibur: Broken Destiny last year but never before has he seen action on a medium equal to his own in violence and carnage.

Kotaku is reporting on the rumors today, the latest of which is the possibility of Kratos being confirmed as a playable cast member (though without a story mode) in January 2011's edition of OPM. We will of course be awaiting the magazine itself for confirmation, but God of War director and designer David Jaffe is confirming via his Twitter account that Kratos is indeed in the game.

Though this story does remain technically unconfirmed, the fact a crucial part of God of War's staff is speaking openly about Kratos being in the game seems like as close to a confirmation as possible. We will keep you updated on this story when more information becomes available.

Mortal Kombat At 21st Annual KROQ Almost Acoustic Christmas!

The 21st Annual KROQ Almost Acoustic Christmas, an event hosted at the Gibson Amphitheatre in Los Angeles, CA features music from a number of popular bands such as The Smashing Pumpkins, Social Distortion, and My Chemical Romance among others. It will run for two nights, Saturday, December 11th and Sunday, December 12th. As confirmed by Rigo Cortes via Twitter, a playable build of Mortal Kombat will be available to the attendees.

Unfortunately, it appears that both nights are currently sold out. Furthermore, we have yet to determine whether this build will be the same as the one featured at previous events such as the two day Brazil Game Show on November 20th and 21st or if it will feature new, previously unseen content.

We will update the story as it develops.

Mortal Kombat is expected to be released Spring 2011 for the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360. The game marks a return to the series 2D roots and features fan favorites like Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Cyrax, Johnny Cage, and many others.

Two New Renders Posted on Official Site!

The official Mortal Kombat site has updated with two new images from the selectable characters currently within the new ranking system.

This stance from the hellspawn Scorpion has been seen before and is now available in render form. He wields the trademark katana that is prevalent in his fighting style within the game itself. The Emperor also has some new clothes; Shao Kahn wields his legendary mallet in what is much closer to his classic 2D Mortal Kombat attire than what we had seen in the first render revealed of the warlord. His chest is scarred with a fresh wound, but he stands defiantly over his domain awaiting would-be challengers to his iron-fisted rule.

The bottom sections of both renders are "shadowed" due to nature in which they are displayed on the official site. As always, we will keep our eyes pealed for higher resolution full renders for both of these characters.

MKast Episode #2 Part 3 Revealed!

Tonight, the third part of Episode 2 of the MKast has been revealed! Paulo Garcia, John Edwards, Hector Sanchez, Brian LeBaron and Hans Lo continue their sitdown discussion with the Mortal Kombat community and take a few questions via Twitter. This particular MKast deals heavily with gameplay, especially combos.

As gameplay footage from the likes of Kung Lao, Kitana, Jax and others plays in the background the developers discuss the finer points of the combo system within Mortal Kombat's fighting engine. It is revealed to be quite in depth, catering to high level players in a variety of ways. Each character will have at least two throws, one used for separation and one used for keeping the opponent close. Some characters may have additional throws that can be used within combos, as shown with Kung Lao who has a variety of options within one of his throws, confirming the presence of command throws. Combo scaling will also be present within the game and each character's combo prowess is determined by their style as a fighter. An example was given that Kitana would be a finesse character, relying on longer combos while Sub-Zero's combos would be shorter but more powerful in nature. Also mentioned again was the lack of a Konquest mode or other type of mini-game outside of the main engine. The single player experience will largely be based within the 2D fighting engine itself, presumably within a deep story mode that has been advertised.

This and previous MKasts can be found at the official Youtube channel.

Official MK Website Launches Feedback Feature!

Since it's countdown launch back in October [full story], the Official Mortal Kombat website has had fans anticipating the opportunity to register to discuss and reveal new details about some of their favourite characters. Today, the wait has ended!

The new official message board offers a range of standard discussion forums about the games and web content, as well as special categories dedicated to Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Mileena, Shao Kahn, and Raiden. These categories are attached to a rankings system, which will allow fans to unlock new materials on each characters' dedicated bio page through forum discussion. The preview bars will also see existing materials, such as the Scorpion and Sub-Zero vignettes already released, be made accessible from the site.

The update also brought with it revised editions of biography text supplied for each of the feature characters. Details alluding to the increasingly elaborate mythologies of each character included backstory accumulated from recent releases, as well as brand new revelations about favourites like Sub-Zero, previously known in-fiction as Tundra, and the very tournament itself, which is said to have been influenced in it's creation by Raiden.

Raiden is the God of Thunder and Protector of Earthrealm. Ageless and wise beyond measure, he leads Earthrealm's mortals in the endless battle against the forces of darkness. When Shao Kahn, Emperor of Outworld, threatened to merge his realm with Earthrealm, an overwhelmed Raiden implored the Elder Gods to give Earthrealm a fighting chance. Thus the Mortal Kombat tournament was created. For millennia Shao Kahn has been kept at bay, but nine consecutive losses to Goro have eroded hope that Earthrealm can be saved. Determined to prevent Armageddon, Raiden tirelessly quests to find a champion worthy of Mortal Kombat.
An assassin of the Lin Kuei clan, Kuai Liang commands the power of ice and cold. Unlike other members of his clan, he and his older brother, Bi-Han, were abducted as children by the Lin Kuei and trained in the techniques of assassination throughout their lives. Though his codename is Tundra, he has now assumed the mantle of Sub-Zero to honor his brother after Bi-Han's mysterious death. Sub-Zero tirelessly hunts the one who killed his brother.
Hanzo Hasashi was once a member of the Japanese Shirai Ryu ninja clan. Given the name Scorpion for his blindingly fast and deadly fighting skill, his life was blessed with glorious kombat in the name of his Grand Master. But when he, his family and his clan were brutally exterminated by Sub-Zero and the Lin Kuei, Scorpion's existence became eternal torment. Resurrected by the malevolent necromancer Quan Chi, he entered the Mortal Kombat tournament to slay Sub-Zero and avenge the murders of his kin.
Emperor Shao Kahn's lust for power is matched only by his ruthlessness. Millennia ago he overthrew Onaga as ruler of Outworld and has conquered many other realms since. Eventually he turned his attention to Earthrealm. The Mortal Kombat tournament prevents him from taking the realm by force, but if Shao Kahn's champions win 10 consecutive tournaments, Earthrealm will be his. As long as his champion Shang Tsung and Prince Goro do not fail him, he will be victorious.
Shang Tsung has created many abominable creatures in his Flesh Pits, but none so twisted as Mileena. A fusion of Edenian flesh and Tarkatan blood, Mileena is both beauty and beast. This dichotomy has made her mind unstable; she is prone to fits of madness and savagery. Though she has the appearance of a mature woman, she is more child than adult--a blank slate conformed to Shao Kahn's will. Devoid of conscience or remorse, Mileena will butcher anyone to appease her beloved father.

Mortal Kombat is currently expected to be released early 2011.

Mortal Kombat Makes Appearance TVs Nikita!

The upcoming Mortal Kombat continues to breath new life into the series as it pushes its marketing campaign into the world of prime time television. The unreleased game had a cameo appearance on The CW's new action drama series Nikita, starring Maggie Q and based of the Nikita name. The episode of appearance is #9, Dark Matter.

The show featured a short bout with two of the show's characters playing the game controlling Scorpion and Sub-Zero. The bout ends with Scorpion victorious and the winner proclaiming his victory was "killer instinct", perhaps yet another subtle nod to memorable fighting game from years past.

November 20th saw the launch of the third annual two-day Brazil Game Show; an expo designed to bring developers from around the world to the South American city of Rio de Janeiro.

In preparation for the release of their latest installment in the long running Mortal Kombat series, producer Hector Sanchez of the NetherRealm Studios team was there to offer a playable demo of the game and interact with fans from the region. Mortal Kombat is expected to be released in the early part of 2011 for the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360. The game boasts classic returning characters featured in the BGS demo, such as; Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Kitana, Johnny Cage, and others.
