dude Ermac is only in 3 games hes not iconic hes only in umk3,mkd and mka and i doubt that would use him for this game since they already have enough ninjas and they have limited space so if they were to put a third ninja they would put Reptile. And for the people saying noob will be in not as a playable character because all he is a palet of subzero and noobs only been in a few games, umk3,mk4,mkd,mka and hes not iconic even though fans like him, he doesnt have any hing unique about him whats his special movie he doesnt have one. Last few games noob sucked. people should face the facts dont get your hopes up for certian palets they want be in with only 10 to 11 charcters from mk.

I don't want more good guys than bad guys but If were talking iconic then most everyone from MK1 is likely to be in.
Sub/Scorp will definetly make the cut now they've been confirmed, which leaves us with 8-9 choices.
Raiden has been iconic since the first mk, so its highly likely he will make it in. With his electrical abilities and god status, it would nearly impossible to not include him, plus he is very popular with the fans.
7-8 left?
Shang Tsung. in my opinion, he is the best mk villian. some of you will agree and some of you wont, but theres no denying his iconic legend status within the mk world. Also, as suggested in another thread, it be quite awesome if returned with his morphing abilities.
6-7 left?
Im willing to bet that Sonya will make the cut. Being the first bad ass lady from the first mk, plus im sure with the fan following she says, it would be rude not to include her - of all lady warriors, its our of her and kitana, and im putting my money on sonya blade.
5-6 left
The rest is up to the team, but my general feeling is, it will include a combination of dark/dangerous characters from mk and nostalagic characters. I can think of 5 more that maybe strong contenders to make the cut:
Johnny Cage
Reptile
Baraka
Liu Kang
Kung Lao
I'm pretty sure on 5 characters, the other 5 or 6 are debatable, but i wont be surprised if my latter 5 are part of the list also.
The general feeling is that the characters from mk1 and mk2 seem to be the most iconic - the chances of seeing someone like kenshi, jarek or li mei is very slim

i put a list out a bit back but after thinking about it this is my new 11.
Confirmed
1. Scorpion
2. Sub Zero
Highly Likely
3. Sonya
4. Cage
5. Kano
6. Shang Tsung
7. Kitana
8. Raiden
Good Possibilities
9. Jax (think about it, Jax vs. Metallo.)
10. Cyrax (i believe they ll have 1 cyborg)
11. Goro (and 1 large character, with 1 large one on the DC side)
i think/hope Liu Kang will get snubbed. i think this game its going to be the more popular/unique characters.

i think mk1 - mk3 characters are more iconic because aloy of people stop playing after umk3
For the record...here are the chances for each of the MK characters are based on past appearances. This includes all 12 MK fighting games: MK1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, & 7, plus UMK3, Trilogy, Gold, Tournament Edition, and Unchained.

This method really doesn't work on characters introduced after MK3..since there aren't enough games to go around....but I'm betting no post-MK3 characters make it other than Quan Chi.
So 8 of these 12 characters will fill out the rest of the roster:
01. Raiden
02. Liu Kang
03. Jax
04. Sonya Blade
05. Johnny Cage
06. Kitana
07. Noob Saibot
08. Shang Tsung
09. Reptile
10. Cyrax
11. Quan Chi
12. Mileena
and Shao Kahn will probably be the boss.

Shao Kahn- Icon of POWER!!!
Shang Tsung (wtf???)- Icon of Immortality
Liu Kang- the "Bruce Lee" Icon

I bet we see one or two "new" characters. While the characters from MK1, MK2, and MK3 are considered classics the series has moved on. Just because their picking iconic characters does not mean they have to soley back track. To the many MK fans who came in later rather then earlier (like my bro), characters like Kenshi, Bo Rai', Ashrah, and Quan Chi are more iconic then Jax, Sonya, Cage, and rain... not to mention more varied.
Personally I think the MUST needed Iconic characters besides Sub and Scorp are
Liu Kang
Raiden
Kung Lao
and
Shao Kahn (even though I hate him... looks like he belongs in he-man)

Do you really think Havik is an Iconic character? I dunno, I think he's cool, but I don't think he's one of the "Iconic" characters. IF the dev team does toss in some of the more recent MK characters, it will most likley be Bo Rai Cho or Kenshi (butchered his name sorry). And to be honest I wouldn't be surprised if they did. Sure, WE, see characters like Sonya, Jax, Kano, ect as Iconic, but younger/newcomers fans aren't gonna really know who they are.

Well Sub-Zero and Scorpion are confirmed. No use debating their participation in the game. Raiden and Liu Kang are two other guys I feel are pretty much locks. Liu Kang is the original protagonist, and really still is, in some ways. As Ed Boon apparently once said: The Luke Skywalker of Mortal Kombat.
I think the game may have two bosses, one from DC (Darkseid?) and another from Mortal Kombat (Shao Kahn, seeing as he is the most iconic main villain of Mortal Kombat). I doubt story is their first prerogative in this game, but given his soul pledge to Shao Kahn, you'd think Shang Tsung would be hanging around. This doesn't bother me, as I feel Tsung is iconic enough. He was the first villain of the Mortal Kombat games, and his morphing is something a lot of people remember. He was also the bad guy in the MK movie people choose to remember.
So that takes us up to five characters: Sub-Zero, Scorpion, Raiden, Liu Kang and Shang Tsung.
Throw in Sonya Blade and Kitana. I think we will get at least two MK ladies, and Sonya was the first female of MK, and she's a favourite of the MK Team. She'd also mesh up well against the DC Universe characters. Kitana is the classic masked female, and while Mileena may be cooler to some, I think Kitana is generally seen as the "primary assassin girl." Her fans being used as weapons make a good visual, too.
Now we're at seven characters: Sub-Zero, Scorpion, Raiden, Liu Kang, Shang Tsung, Sonya Blade and Kitana.
Goro is pretty synonymous with Mortal Kombat, I think. As a sub-boss, he was something completely different, and something that helped put MK on the map. He's since become somewhat of a staple of the series, being the only sub-boss to really return, and undergoing several personality changes. The Shokan Prince almost feels like a comic character. He'd make a great counterpart for Doomsday, too.
This leaves us with two spaces. I want to say Johnny Cage makes it in. As someone put it in his game card (I think it may have even been Ed Boon), he's the classic "comic relief" of the series. That makes him fairly iconic, I think. His character also played a big part in the MK movie, and Linden Ashby stole a lot of scenes. People would remember Johnny Cage from the classic games, the movie, and if you take into consideration he was almost literally going to be Jean-Claude Van Damme, JC was almost the first crossover involved in the Mortal Kombat universe.
With the last character, I can see it going many ways. Personally, my preference, for whatever reason, is to go with Kenshi. His telekinetic powers would set him apart, without being anything that needs too much explaining. He's got a cool look, and the sword stuff helps him avoid getting lost in the shuffle. Kenshi is probably the most unique character from later MK games.
Jax is a favourite of Ed Boon, and the metal arms thing isn't exactly commonplace. He could very easily make it in. You also have Kabal, who is a vigilante, which fits parallel to Batman, for example. He's also got a good look. Mileena, as I mentioned, would fit into this game very well. The only thing more iconic than Kitana and Mileena separately is Kitana and Mileena together. Baraka has the blades, which may not have been entirely original, but he stands out as a memorable character to a lot of people. It'll be the closest a lot of people will come to playing Wolverine and Batman against each other.
Reptile completes the ninja trilogy. He isn't exactly a background character within the series. And finally, I could see Sindel making it in, just because she would be a great counterpoint for Wonder Woman. Hell, the woman just runs her own realm, was the bride-to-be of the main villain of the games and was the key to the third story -- it's not like she's unimportant to the series.
I'm going to rule out Reptile and Mileena, just because they are too alike other characters. Jax is a favourite of Boon, but do we really need two of Earth's Special Forces? Maybe they feel like they need a token black guy, though? Kenshi may not be iconic enough, as much as I hate to say it. It's down to Kabal and Sindel, I believe. Both have styles to them that would fit a comic book, but I think Sindel gets knocked off because Kitana is hanging around, and Sindel dying gives Kitana a story worth a damn. The new grieving queen finds universes merging around her, and doesn't know what to do. Even though I'm not a big fan of him, I can see Kabal getting the nod, Hookswords and all. He sort of covers Kano's contribution to the original game (criminal), and he's got a unique look, some good special moves, and he's quite popular within the games.
So my final guest list is: Sub-Zero, Scorpion, Raiden, Liu Kang, Shang Tsung, Sonya Blade, Kitana, Johnny Cage, Goro and Kabal. The last slot I am still fairly unsure of.

We need to remember this is a crossover so i can't see the characters who need to be explained being in the game. I mean a character like Mileena needs to be explained to new people, so they will probably just go with the ones who are nice and simple. i love Mileena but i can't see them taking the time to tell DC fans how she is Kitanas clone and the story thats needed to get the her. So im thinking it'l be the striaght forward characters who you dunt really need to understand to play.

Hmmm, maybe. I dont think thats a good enough reason, but I do like Kabal...from Mk3 though, if its just 1 character, I much rather have Sindel.
Now that Sonya has been confirmed, I hope for Poison Ivy, though Im guessing she wont make the cut, though she is worth it!!!

I'm going for 11 characters and trying to pick an iconic character and then match them up with their historical nemesis as best I can. I expect the same thing to happen on the DC side of the roster. Batman and Joker etc.
For example let's say Sonya makes it vecause she's deemed iconic so therefore Kano gets in too because the two have a history of not getting along. This would avoid having too many good guys and would probably make sense storyline wise.
1. Scorpion
2. Sub Zero
3. Raiden
4. Quan Chi
5. Liu Kang
6. Shang Tsung
7. Kitana
8. Shao Kahn
9. Smoke
10. Noob
11. Goro
That's actually quite tough to figure out and I hate having to leave out characters I really like. Tried to get a good mix there with different typres of character and get things balanced.
I'm pretty set on everyone in that list other than possibly Noob and Smoke. Other guys who I thought about for these spots were Cage, Sonya, Kano, Kabal, Baraka, Mileena, Jade and Cyrax. One thing I'm sure about though is that at the end of the day, we can talk about which characters are iconic and should make it and Boon can say a bunch of stuff but then there will still be random characters who make the roster that no one expected and didn't fit any of the criteria that had previously been outlined. One other thing to consider is who will be in the DC lineup and therefore might cancel out some MK characters. For example if the Flash is going to be there, that would rule out Kabal because they'd have similar special moves and it would be like having the same player twice.

Sub Zero---Batman
Sonya---Flash
so far.... My guesses could be
Goro---Doomsday
Reptile---Poison Ivy
Shang Tsung---Joker
Jax---Bane
Kung Lao---Green Lantern
Raiden---Dr. Light
Other than that, I'm clueless as to the DC characters. I'm not all that familiar with most of them.

Okay, I'm going to take another stab at this character list. We now know that there will be in the "Mid twenties" of characters thus 24 or 26. I think we can safely assume an even number from both sides. I'm also going to try to take into account the characters confirmed and "suggested" in the leaked info. Here goes:
Mortal Kombat:
1) Sub-Zero (C)
2) Scorpion (C)
3) Sonya (C)
4) Jax
5) Raiden
6) Kabal
7) Reptile
8) Johnny Cage
9) Mileena
10 Kitana
11) Goro
12) Shang Tsung
13) Shao Kahn
DC Universe:*
1) Batman (C)
2) Superman (C)
3) Flash
4) Wonder Woman
5) Green Lantern
6) Black Canary
7) Power Girl
8) Hawkman
9) Robin
10) Joker
11) Lex Luthor
12) Doomsday
13) Darkseid
*This all depends if the "leaked information" is correct. It still seems like WAY too many heroes on the DC side to me.
