Sorry, I missed your clutter comment. But I agree. I think that, judged on their own merits, the renders look fine (except for the Superman one, which was a stinker), but the character design seems like it was done by a different group of people than the Midway team. Very strange. We'll see what happens.

Agreed, for Sub-Zero anyway. My fav so far has to be Scorpion's. I noticed the mask changed and his scar is indeed there. There, happy now "scar fans"? lol....

Yeah, I like his newer mask too. Looks like a futuristic/revamped version of his Cyromask. Looks cool. Perhap's he'll have his other mask in the first render as part of his alternate?
But yeah, that ice ball looks hot.
On another note, for the dude that said some of the MK people seem overdressed....take a look at some SC renders (male characters) like the black dude, he's a walking jewelry closet lol....not that I really care about that stuff in a fighting game but if I were one of those "demanding unpleased fans 24/7" I could easily make a stink about how he fights with all that shit dangling off him lol
Personally, I don't think Sub's overdressed just has more details on his gi to make him "stick out" more.
But hey, to each his own. You know what they say, "Opinions are like Assholes, Everybody has one"

There's something... effete about them, somehow. They don't look as powerful (both in physical size and design-wise) as they did in the past few games. There are certain elements about the design that I like, but does anyone else get the sense that they're a bit overdressed (for lack of a better term)? It seems like there's too many embellishments to the costumes. I dunno. I hope these are just alts.

I think the flowery design work is the only thing standing between a half decent outfit and several tragic steps backward to the days of homogenous, thoughtless colour-defined outfits.
The similarities between Sub-Zero and this Scorpion are arguably bad enough as is. At least the detailing gives Sub-Zero something to call his own. Something more specific to a sense of branding.
I don't know if I'd say he looks physically effete, but the looooong torso isn't helping anything. He'd probably look a lot less strange if the crotch-shoulder/leg ratio wasn't so far off. You'd think someone might have paid more attention to anatomy on an official piece of artwork.
I'm not sure about the graphic quality, but I'm surprised to see people impressed by the cowl texture. I would've thought contemporary games had moved beyond rubbery, solid looking fabric folds. I wouldn't have thought the texture was especially convincing or impressive, at all.

Enough with these renders. I find it boring talking about one render a week when the game is less than 5 months away. They should do was bungie did with HALO 3. Give us a beta version and we can take it from there. OR at least a good trailer or something. Releasing Beta to fans would have been sweet though but I doubt they have the resources

Yea i agree. But i do think the outfits in SC do seem awesome, since that game is more about Medieval warriors. So the more clothing, the more representative they are of there culture. Same with Indians and war paint/feathers. It's a TRIBAL thing.

That, to me, seems much less about historical reference, and more about a stronger design sense. If MK were to inject some of that consistency and logic into it's designs we might be much less uncertain coming into every new game.
I'll never understand the people fiercely dedicated to the weaknesses of the past, or the bizarre notion that characters should be changing wardrobe between every game. There's margin for change, but if we could just establish one solid look, there's typically very little reason for a handful of these characters to change.
Certainly, as far as historical and tribal reference goes, it would be nice to make the Lin Kuei more instantly identifiable. I've had this debate in the fansub forum, but I still feel there's very little convincing about what's been established for the clan.
It would've been especially nice if Sub-Zero and his new Lin Kuei could've been the vehicle for developing something more identifiable and elaborate.

Ohh I hear ya man, just making a general statement for the people obsessing over " excessive garments" in SC the ladies are hardly wearing anything as oppose to some of the male characters lol. So, they could if they wanted to strip down a little bit because in a realistic sense, you can't fight with all that stuff tying you down. Know what I mean?
Graphics look sick!! can't wait to see more characters, please let Ermac or Fujin make this game lol. Probably won't happen but ya never know.
Reptile I'm sure will be next, or Batman might be then some newer people.

I was under the impression it was supposed to be leather or some similar fabric.
I also wouldn't recommend Midway start looking to recent Soul Calibur for costume ideas. Some of MK's designs might not make sense but people in Soul Calibur IV are wearing random belts around their arms and wire fencing for a dress. So...yeah.

Of course, this is all based on very early renders that aren't in-game, so I'll reserve judgment until we get some crisp screenshots. I've already come to grips with with the whole MK vs. DC concept, which I was not thrilled about initially. I look forward to seeing more art/screens so we can get a better idea of what to expect.

i don't like it,it's not photorealistical as i want, and his mask it's identical to his in MK DA.
His attire has changed in worse,'ause i prefer the one in the teaser trailer. So,we have to expect some changes also for Batman?

Not sure what else they could add, that hasn't been done before. Unless they totally go RAIN and add a cape with his MKD alt, with a mask guard and no head wear, cept a ponytail.
