I can understand both points of view. Being a hardcore MK player, I don't mind most of the fluff not being included. Sure, "Cooking with Scorpion" was humorous, but unnecessary. The core gameplay should be enough to satisfy any MK purist.

On the other side, I can see where people might feel a little "gipped" for having paid $60 with little in the way of extras available. To the people soley concerned with single player, I say rent the game. You'd get the satisfaction of going through both sides of the story and seeing all the Fatalities without having paid full price.

To everyone else, see you on Live/PSN.

Surely anyone can understand that much at least.

This is the way gaming is going, the same complaint can be made about COD4, Halo 3 and numerous other titles. Hell the single player in COD4 only takes about 5 hours to complete. Online is the future of gaming. Do I like it ? Yes and no, for fighting games: Hell yeah, For FPSs: hell no because FPSs were originally single player focused games to begin with. Halo 3 trimmed back the single player and fucking loath that entry for it.

I think people are misunderstanding what I mean when I say
lack of content. I'm not talking about all the silly crap like umm,
puzzle kombat, chess kombat, racing, character concepts,
cooking with scorpion, and things of the like. I have never cared
for those things. What I mean by content is, alternate costumes,
extra characters, unlockable arenas. You know, content that
would add to the actual in game experience. Not the useless
stuff that you'd never be able to use & only look at in a Krypt.

Well, I think this time around, they wanted to get players up and running online as quickly as possible by making all the characters unlocked from the beginning. I can see your point though. It is cool to unlock characters and what not, but I'm fine either way. As for alt costumes, I'm sure we'll get some DLC for those. But you're right, the thrill of discovery is gone without many unlocable items.

It's too bad that you are not interested in online play. I can't even describe how much enjoyment I get from competing online.

As a fighting game, I think its fun. As a one player game, I think its shallow. So I have to agree with people who say, if you want a 1 player game, don't buy it, if you want a fighting only game, its a good one to add to your library. But that's just my opinion and should be treated as such. Don't come after me if you buy the game and hate it. You should've rented it first.

I live in CA. But I won't go into any more details than that.

I am also happy to say that I haven't experienced a slow down while playing the game. It runs at a good a speed. Surprisingly it runs this way on the PS3 version. Which, as many know, isn't the case with 99% of the cross-platform games. There isn't a mandatory install either. It does require Firmware 2.5 at minimum to run though.

I'll have more spoilers and updates later on today. Any maybe have videos up, but I have to borrow a deck from my cousin to capture and then post.

Okay people

One of the big reasons because I complain about replay value is because:

1. Not everyone play online

2. This is a console game, not arcade. Midway cannot put a thing down our throat and make us accept. With so less characters, there is not interesting to this game to unlock, no more than 2 characters, no arenas, no konquest adventure.

Those things this days are necessary, I believe.

Just see some other fighting games, like Tekken, like Soul Calibur, even Dragon Ball and other Anime series. Tons of things to do in offline mode, not only fight fight fight.

Even SNK Playmore, brings much more interesting things, than this generic crap attempt of bring back the felling of original arcade.

Even Street Fighter 4, that I dont like is in the right direction, since Capcom give their fans exactly what they want.

Midway is completely deaf.

ChrisDVD just a couple of things. smile

1. I was wondering if all the characters are available on the start?

2.. I was wondering if you could take a picture of the select screen.

No, I know what you meant. Characters, costumes and possibly areans will be available, they will just be downloadable content. I hated having to go through konquest just to unlock my fav. characters costumes or the characters themselves. All of this would have been achieved during much of the original playthrough anyway, so I don't think you're missing out on that much. And I say this as someone who primarily likes LONG RPG with lots of sidequest and good replayability. I don't need that in my fighting game if the Online play is great.

But, as I said before, I can understand your point of view. As someone suggested, this would probably be a better rental for you. If you don't play online or have friends to play it with, then you wouldnt get much out of it after the first few days.

All Characters except Shao Kahn and Darkseid are available out of the box.

You unlock both of them by playing their respective Story Modes.

I can try to post a pic of the selection screen.

Note, that after you unlock Darkseid and Shao Kahn, you have to press R1 to access the secret characters. A panel comes out with pictures of Kahn and Darkseid and you can press Left or Right to rotate between them. Perhaps this is how they incorporate DLC characters, if there is going to be DLC characters.

No they're not. It's just that this time they're listening to a different set of fans. MKDA, MKD, MKA.. all of those listened to the fan side of: "More gore, more extras, more characters, etc etc.." They listened to them.

NOW they're listening to the side of the fanbase that says:

"HEY! Fix the damned gameplay will ya? It's about time don't ya think?"

Which is fair. They listened to the other side for 3 games straight.

Now we're getting an MK that looks like it'll play the best that MK has in years. So no... they're not deaf, they're just being fair.

i don't think anyone wants pure fluff in a game.

no one is saying ignore the fighting engine have it play like shit but include 50,000 pictures of the quality assurence team. clearly to unlock all of that you need to have a game that plays well.

I'M saying that MK lacks a good balance between those. like warriorprincess i hated konquest all of them except for the one in MKDA because it was all exposition and fights.

for the record i don't like canon fodder in my fighting games either, i love that this game is going to play WAY better than the past three MK games and that it's going to be a return to form of sorts for the franchise.
people like warriorprinces have said on multiple occasions that they don't like the silly mini games and extra crap they put in the games to hide the fact that they play horribly and i hate them too.

it just so happens that i do not play online, partly because i don't have the means to. and there are a lot of people in the situation i am in. there are some people here that don't even HAVE a current generation system let alone use all the perks that comes with this generation of gaming.
yes at it's very core a fighting game is meant to be played against other people but all the time you don't have that. should people like me just not buy any mortal kombat game again unless it's a spin off or rpg? no we love the franchise and want to enjoy and support it to.

we're just saying that they should create modes of play that still let you enjoy the actual fighting aspect of the game without having it wrapped up in a retarded mini game. T5, SCIV, VF5 and DOA4 did this.
i don't want them to take to much time away from making a great tournament playable fighting game but is a survival mode to much to ask for? a choose your destiny ladder with all 22 characters?
even a player vs CPU would greatly expand the replay value of this game for offline players because they'd still have something to do beyond the arcade mode and story mode.

i don't think there are too many people that play this game soley for the fatalities and story. i'm playing for the same reasons as you guys. you play a good fighting game. and like you guys i just want to play for more than a week.

No, I don't think that's too much to ask. I would actually love the idea of a survival mode. Team survival too maybe. I also believe that you should be able to fight ALL characters in the arcade mode instead of just a random handful. The Arcade modes in the latest MK games have been SOOO short.

As for the Player / CPU Vs mode? HELL YES.. I've wanted that for a long time now.

Precisely

This is what I am talking about

Arcade Mode
Story Mode
Versus Mode with a 1P VS Com mode
Practice Mode
Survival Mode
Team Battle Mode
Time Attack

I am not talking only about those extras in MKDA, Deception or Armageddon, I am talking about game modes, this game lacks completely.

Okay, enough talk. After one week I want to see all your comments again folks.

Those different modes aside though... I am really glad that they took time to make the gameplay really great (or at least it looks to be.. hands on experience will tell.)

However, those modes should be included in the next full MK game. I mean, they've already got a great fighting system worked out. Just probably have to tweak it a bit here and there to make it that much better. So they'll be able to focus more on some other areas.

Another mode I'd love to see make a come back is the Endurance mode. It was my fav part of MK1.

Back to topic

Tell us now aspects of the gameplay ChrisDVD, please.

Characters share the same normal moves?

It is possible to do constant special moves like classic games or there is a a small wait time like past MKs?

Are there weapons in the game, for characters like Kano, Baraka...?

How is the jumping? The flying kicks and punches looks generic in videos?

How many battles in arcade ladder? They are random this time or fixed based the character you choose?

How many battles in story mode?

The missions in combo training are real hard or just Midway as making terror?

Ok, just so I understand:
You CAN fight the cpu in arcade mode, right?

Also, to answer the question about the 'little blue people' that Green Lantern knows: those are the Guardians of the Universe, from planet Oa, which is actually a planet right smack in the middle of the universe. The actually govern all the Green Lanterns and control the central power battery that powers all the rings.

I've been wondering about Kano's and Baraka's specials.

Do they have any new ones Chris? Or did they just have ALL of their signature moves returned to them like Sonya did?

And you all have faith in Midway....

Yay for picture endings! (and we've known they would be there for about 1-2 months)
Using the picture endings you can explain much more, much better than in some clunky Tekken like ending. Fantastic grin

eh, I didn't expect story mode to keep you playing for that long, I'm getting this because it looks likea fun game, and from what I'm hearing, it plays like a fun game.

And something else that I think everyone will agree with:

Anyone playing this game for the extra content, blood, gore, etc. will be disapointed

Anyone playing this game for gameplay will be pleased.

So yeah, no one call themself a "true MK fan," because they like/hate the game. No one call someone else a blind MK fan because they like/hate the game. That's stupid.

There are two different types of fans, and let's just agree to disagree about this game here.

I agree with this. I think if the MK team were given the time they actually needed to complete a game the way they wanted to... we'd have something truly awesome. I say this because the MK team seem to have really great ideas for the directions they want to take (in the planning process of these games)... but end up being bitch smacked by time constraints. It's a shame.

I do have one question ChrisDVD. What is the resolution display for HDTV's? Is it 720P or 1080P? I'm guessing 720, but I'm curious cos I'll be playing it on a TV capable of 1080P. Thanks in advance.
