They need one to oppose the bionic arm wearing African American special forces agent which every game also has. What a waste of two good spots. @ DrCube: Are you crazy? Every Mk fan knows that the games were not based on the films! the movies were secondary, the MK games came first. To use MK Annihilation as a reference is a slap in the face of the MK franchise. That movie has been practically shunned by just about every MK fan there is. The only MK game in which Sindel was the main female villain was MK3. Other than that Mileena has always dominated as MK's most bad ass, and most favored villainess.

i'd say tanya is more of a villian. she seems way more capable and stable and a better villian and a more interesting, mysterious, complex characters. however mileena is old and apparently in MK old=best.

While I do like Tanya, she has never been a complex, or well thought out character. She is basically just a traitor and coward. Someone who will serve anyone no matter how evil just so she can save her own ass. They have not explored anything beyond that part of her personality really.

Here's my defense for the Mileena fans.

You really cannot say Mileena and Kitana are similar. Perhaps in their initial pallette-swapped days, they may have looked the same, but that's changed. And it goes beyond pointy teeth.

Mileena is endearing to us MK fans because she is a ruthless, jealous, ugly, and evil counterpart to Kitana, like Scorpion will always be to Sub-Zero (keep him a villain, Boon....). She's a genetic freak of nature, a flawed creation, and her entire existence was revealed to her to be one giant set-up. After Kitana joined the side of good, she lost her reason for being and decided to instead become better than the woman she was cloned from.

It's Solid Snake vs. Liquid Snake but with two deadly female assassins.

Kitana is currently living in the lap of luxury in Edenia with her loving mother, ruling over a world that loves her. Mileena is currently feared, hated, backstabbed, and forgotten, labeled as a degenerate creation and forced to reside in the pits of Outworld or the Netherworld. To her, she deserves better. She deserves everything Kitana has, and she's driven to have that.

That makes Mileena a far more compelling and dynamic character to follow than Kano, Baraka, or Liu Kang. They're one-shot, one-note heroes and villains, while Mileena actually has some DEPTH.

Concerning her status as an "icon", it is very well deserved. As some people rightly pointed out, she is the first villainess of the MK franchise, the "Scorpion" to Kitana's "Sub-Zero". While Kitana may have emerged as the more likeable heroine due to her beauty and fan attacks, Mileena is by far the more ruthless, driven, and complex one.

I'll be the first to admit, I'm sorely disappointed in the majority of the casting choices for this new game. I was angry when it was announced, disappointed when it was confirmed, and then rather apathetic about its release, hoping that a few of my prefered characters, such as Mileena, would be included.

It didn't happen. with the exception of Sub-Zero, who was a given, not a single one of my favorite characters made the cut. No Quan Chi, no Sareena, no Mileena, no Reptile, no Kenshi, no Li Mei, no Noob Saibot, no Smoke, no Hotaru, no Kung Lao.....

I mean, just look to the left at the website skins. Who do you see? There's Mileena's themed MKO skin. She's an icon, and she got passed over in favor of wooden characters like Kano, Jax, and blasted "Shazam". No offense Big Red Cheese fans, but would you rather have Billy Baston in the game.... or Mileena?

My two cents...

In my opinion, BOTH Kitana and Mileena should've been in this game. Not to say they always have to go hand-in-hand...because they don't. Kitana doesn't need Mileena and Mileena doesn't need Kitana, they simply complement one another and make each other more interesting. Both should've been in based on their own merits. Kitana is an icon, she's popular, and she's one of MK's more developed characters with a good story.
So is Mileena.

Some will say that Mileena isn't needed because we have Kitana, but that's a short-sighted argument. Obviously they're similar, but they are not the same. I'm a fan of both, but Kitana doesn't fill the void left by Mileena's absence...and I'm sure other Mileena fans feel the same way. If Mileena were in and Kitana left out, Kitana fans would feel the that way.
Even if they really are going to portray Kitana a villain (hopefully they won't), that doesn't solve the matter. Most likely, it'll only piss off both fanbases.

Design-wise Mileena has grown far beyond simply being the "purple Kitana." For better or worse, the MK team has decided Mileena is the character they're going to go hog wild on with "sexy" designs. And in doing that, they've given Mileena a fairly distcintive look that actually suits her character.
Take Mileena's outfit in Deception. NOTHING like Kitana. Even when people would take Mileena renders and change the colors to blue...it still didn't look like Kitana. It looked like Mileena wearing blue.

I would argue that Mileena is an icon of Mortal Kombat. She, now, has a distinctive look and I'm confident she is at least as well known as Baraka or Kung Lao. And let's face it, the only reason Kano is known by any non-MK fans is because of the movie. Mileena has also come to represent MK's "femme fatale," something that I think would be worth including in this game.

And I give points to icons who actually show some depth of character and have actual merit in terms of conception and execution. And Mileena succeeds there as well, IMO. We know why she is the way she is and why she does what she does...and we can also even kind of feel bad for her, despite her villainy. That's more effective than a one-note hairy thug with a metal eye.

Some will argue she can't be in because if Mileena was in, it would throw the character counterpart/parallel thing off balance, because if she was in someone would not have a DC match-up or something. To that I have to ask: who gives a shit? Do you really think that....THAT...should be a crucial factor in deciding who got in the game or not?

All in all, I am disappointed by Mileena's absence. But her spot wasn't "stolen" by Kitana. That, I place blame on guys like Kano, Jax, or Baraka. Kano's not an icon...he's just an old character who may or may not be well known outside the fanbase. And one may be able to argue that Jax and Baraka are reasonably iconic, but I think Mileena surpasses them.

On another note. I am somewhat pleased that the roster turned out the way it did. It is not a plastic-fav-fiesta, and it is definitely somewhat balanced. And thankfully not all characters have counterparts. Some have, some do not. And so far it is good.

Exactly, I don't get the hate over Jax, but like you said Kano should be the one people are complaining about. While Jax have slipped in likability for the past 6 years, he has remained popular and iconic. Kano has gone down in popularity, there aren't really many Kano fans around. I think the reson why Kano has gone down in popularity is due to MKD introducing a whole bunch of other black dragon members, to sum it up, Kabal stole the show,lol.
