Superficial Additions to MK8
What superficial, minor details, as many as you can think of, do you think Mortal Kombat could benefit from? By superficial, I mean things that don't affect gameplay in the slightest. Those might include things from the past such as The Krypt or the Bios, but I'm expecting those to probably return (the Bios had BETTER return.....
)
Here are some ideas I had, good or not.
1. Prefight introductions - You know those wonderful intros in all the OTHER fighting games where the fighter's talk smack to each other or show off before getting down to business? I think MK could have some pretty fun and inventive ones.
2. Real-time endings. Mortal Kombat hasn't had these yet. Personally, I was a bit of a fan of MK4/Gold's FMV endings, but I can stomach text and picture endings (MK:A, you fail at endings...), but I'm in love Soul Blade/Calibur 3's real-time endings that not only change depending on quick-time actions but are actually rather deep, dynamic, and interesting to observe.
3. Combat banter - sure Scorpion says "C'mere!" and "Get Over Here!" but everyone else just grunts like cavemen or babbles things incoherently (I do love how people hear different things like "Do you want a pie?!" "Not today!"); having them actually say SOMETHING like "take this!" or "not so fast!" or something more personality based like "you shall suffer!" or "your soul is mine!" As it is, Shao Kahn's the only one really with the taunts (and you have to hit a button.) Giving the characters something to say might make them a tad more unique.
4. Character customization - No, not kreate-a-fighter, but taking already existing characters and customizing them in minor or major ways. Many characters have enough history and variation that there could be some interesting combinations or new looks. Do you want MK1 Scorpion? MKII? Skull head? Flaming skull? Swords or no swords? Type of mask? etc. Or totally original details, like what you can do in Tekken or Vitua Fighter by adding stuff like shades, horns, wings, tattooes, etc. to the fighters.
5. Progressive story scenes - Games like Tekken or Dead or Alive will occassionally have pre-fight story progressions depending on the characters you face. Many kombatants in Mortal Kombat have grudges against one another, and it would be nice if, upon fighting them, they could exchange some dialogue or have a dramatic stare down or SOMETHING. It would be a good way to progress the story, develop characters, and make the fights a tad more interesting and meaningful rather than just a ladder of A.I. thugs. You might even be able to do quick-time events like in Soul Calibur 3 where quick button presses might result in you avoiding an enemy trap and avoiding a fighting handicap.
6. Ripped clothing - it's been said before, but I'll say it again. Battle-damage was a nice, but flawed, addition in MK:DA. It was entirely superficial, but it was appreciated, even if it didn't exactly look right or have any relevence upon where the fighter was hit. But torn clothing or other battle damage would be nifty. Shirts shredded by swords, armor chinked, flowing capes turned ragged, etc. And, no, I don't want to see any girl's boobs fall out of a cut-up tank-top... at least not in this game.
7. A Different musical score - Now, nothing is WRONG with the musical score. On the contrary, there are some very good and memorable tracks, especially some of the older stuff and a few of the newer material is easily worth a listen, but it really doesn't sound, for the most part, either intense or epic. It's a strange mix of grunge, percussion, and industrial. Again, nothing WRONG with that, but I wonder what the game would "feel" like with a different type of musical score, perhaps something more akin to the style of Immediate Music (look them up) that's a strange mix of modern techno, percussion, and epic choir chants. Certainly not something as upbeat and bouncy as Dead or Alive or Tekken's music, but something like dark symphonic wouldn't be bad.
8. Bloodstains - this might be a really minor thing, but I think it would be cool. In the older MKs, despite beating the snot and blood out of your opponent by the gallons, everyone always came away spotless. Now, there WAS the battle damage thing from MK:DA, but I'm not talking about that. I'm talking about both the victim AND the attacker. Swords will become red with dripping blood, fists and knuckles will get raw and covered in your opponent's blood, when it drips, it stains the clothing, perhaps splashing onto the attacker's body with a good kick or punch. MK was once known as the bloodiest game of its time... but let's take it to a whole new, realistic and sadistic level of detail.
That's all the ideas I have for now. Anyone else have some ideas? Remember, they can't affect actual gameplay, but are rather just superficial things you think would make the game more interesting. They don't even really have to be good ideas, just some ideas.

Ripped clothing is something I've wanted for a long time, just to add to the realisticness. The blood staining is a new one for me, I hadn't thought of that. But, the pre match stuff? I'm not so big on that idea. I can just imagine it being very silly and I don't want it to be like silly and that. If it was menacing or dark, or whatever, yeah. I'd go for it. But, if it's like "Oh, hey! Wanna fight?" (Imagine Dragonball Z games...), I don't think I could stomache that.
I'd like Number 4 and the one about Ripped Clothing and the one about the Music. Because yeah the music needs to give you that feel of: Omg, We're all going to die!"
And the one about the Ripped Clothing. It's never been done in a Video game of Fighting ever. It would be awesome to see that Midway was the First to do it.
Unless I am wrong. And other VG's Have done it. =/
It would be nice to have the Custimize Character thing.
Sounds much better to do that than make your own KAK

Hm....damn good points man. I'm one to pay some ridiculous attention to the "little things", but I gotta say, you covered a good chunk. Hm...I think I got a few anyway....
1. Victory Pose: Not when you win a fight, when you select the character. You member right? In hind-sight, I think it made me feel like I had already chosen a winner. I have voiced that I want them back around the net.
1a. Also, what fits here, is the idea of having the character do something like their kata at the select screen on scroll over of their avatar. Which really looks like what boxers do in the ring before a boxing match starts, instead of what we have been getting, in the form of monotonous rocking back and forth as they stand there. Or it would just look like these things that the MKTeam had made for MKA
Raiden
Sub-Zero
1b. Animated avatars....you know I had to think of that one right? Why not? They don't cost alot on the KB side of things...why not have the character in their little box moving around? I haven't seen that done before either.
2. MK Pong: We could find it in the game through secret codes and stuff before...put it on the loading screen. Along with any other little silly ass simple, TRUE "mini game". Serve as something to do while we wait.
You could also have something like what SC3 had, where you'd push in a command on the loading screen, with the two characters there about to fight ....and have them say or do something per their personality. Battle cry or whatever like SC had.
3. I liked the get up animations they had in MKA...I wouldn't mind having those back.
And then, what would also fit here is what happens after a Fatality is finished...there were no victory poses there in MKA. I mean, what better place to put a victory pose, than RIGHT THERE?!? They should be most exciting right there, I think. But instead, characters just sorta...stood there after they killed somebody. MkDa post fatality, victory poses....were good. Put them back. .. Please.
4. Kick Dust: Like the old martial arts flicks used to have. There was something that just hurt about seeing dust fly off of a guy after he was hit REALLY hard. lol But it could be used for the people who unusually might want a break from all the blood. It could also be used when a punch or kick doesn't draw blood. Reason to give us a blood code back, and another cool little setting in the options menu too.
5. Animate the bios, or let us interact some kind of way. Working on ideas for this one...but they could let us into the characters personality here. Let them talk and do their kata here or something. idk just yet.
6. Training Mode: Train with a teacher//drill Sargent//sensei to get better as a fighter, hold all your earned stuff in "your house" or dojo(clothing and armor that you bought and may want to wear again in the future. weapons, and lessons. Let me have the option to save and keep this stuff..). Stats and everything here to visualize what I need to imporve on as a character.
7. Voice Acting: I liked the sound effect associated with the RUN button back in the day. I want them to update that, and individualize it from what they did before.
And like you said Garlador, actually speaking words during a match wouldn't kill them to do. At least base it off of where the character is from. It'd be funny for characters to react to not understanding each others languages too. "I don't know what all the jibberish is about, but you bet your ass I'm gonna tear you a new one for saying it." or "What did you say about my momma?!? lol
After all of that, Voice acting needs to be as natural sounding as possible. In the studio booth, I'd have them just be in there, with the engineer just recording two people getting ready without them knowing it. Then play it back to them so they can understand "Relax", or "Gradually come to be excited", or tell them to draw from real anger or stress in their actual life. That's the magic behind recording vocals....it's to catch genuine emotion from a person.
Hell, I'd go so far as to have the voice actors shadow box in the booth to set the tone of a fight scene that has any dialogue.
I don't want any of that generic, ridiculously scripted sounding dialogue. People don't talk like that. People talk slow, or with haste....people talk with accents or slang(true slang). People interject alot in conversation, note "the irony of things" or in the way some people talk, you can tell that there is an absence of thought process, or overabundance. People burp, and say excuse me(or not) during a conversation...scratch their head, look around, or play with whatever is sitting in front of them(pencil paper, or cup), pick at their clothes in a conversation. All that should show up in the actual animation, and should feel like they were doing that through their voice actually.
Point is, conversation is really intuitive, and circumstantial at it's best between 2 or more people who are talking about, or trying to figure out one or more things together. Alot of information is transfered between a group of people too. Nobody wants to be left out of the "loop". The conversation is usually not over until each person at least understands a "situation". Some banter is exchanged( "hey, look at that hot chick"..."what happened to you after the last time I seen you?")...ect ect
8. Use Science and Myth as grounds for bringing in special powers. Like the understanding of "Chi" and "Ki".
Take Raiden for example. His powers should be related to Myth, some Biblical, and Cosmos. But should also only have restrictions based on what Science tells us today. What is electricity capable of as we know it today? And what would a person do with that power if they knew what science tells us today, and could individually command it? That's where the line of ideals for what he's capable of, should come from. We'd see alot more elaborations on special moves for elemental characters alone.
Another example is the sorcerers and magicians. Shinnok, Quan Chi, and Shang Tsung specifically, should violate Scientific explanation constantly. Which they do...just not to a fascinating degree most of the time. Their capabilities and confinements, should come straight out of the virtual "book of necromancy". "The Command Of Dead" or in alot of cases "Undead".
It's really disappointing because there is so much you can do with those powers alone. Elemental and Necromany.
Umm...I think I'm ranting now...post some other stuff later. But I agree with all the stuff you posted too Garlador. It's right on point.

do you image half nude characters like Mileena and Sareena with ripped clothes?they probably would fght nude.
sorry i don't think that this element can be used for every character.
i don't like the weapons covered in blood either.
if you hit a enemy with a sword you should kill him instantanely or cut off a arm.a weapon covered of blood isn't enough realistical, but it's better than nothing.
i think that Midway team will work hardly on enviromental effects, like water, lights, breakable scenarios(i don't mean multy level arenas,ut 100% destructable stage) more interactivty (IE: you can double jump on walls or springboard on a top to execute new moves, like hayabusa in DoA 4).
very important are special powers for every characers:they need to have original ones and act as more as realistical as possible.

There's a difference between ripped clothing and removed clothing. I can easily see Mileena's skimpy outfis with cuts and tears while still covering her goods. No one knows if she'll even be back, but it's very possible to have clothing damage, even if they were just in bikinis, without exposing their naughty bits.
I, and I think many others, would have a problem with a "realistic" weapon match that resulted in instant kills or dismemberment. Squaresoft's Bushido Blade tried that and the formula was very flawed. Nobody wants to play a fighting game only to be killed on the first lucky blow to the skull. But blood-stained weapons would at least help with the illusion that they are getting cut up a tad.
Environmental effects are a very good idea on something that could be improved. Real-time damage to the environments has been implamented at times, but never on a large scale. It wouldn't affect gameplay, but watching the ground crack when your body hits the floor, pillars chip away, walls break down, and other environmental factors are always appreciated. I'm not sure about the interactivity part though (good idea but the idea is that these minor additions do NOT affect gameplay in any way.)
I might want to add another one: More Expressive Characters. For the most part, all the fighters have the same blank look on their face (often the pre-requisite "pissed off" look), but they could probably benefit from more expressive characters, especially if Konquest mode returns. That way, they won't HAVE to say everything their feeling ("I feel angry!" "This upsets me!") and we can actually have some readable emotions rather than verbal ones for once.
I like all your ideas exept customization. I could do without that.
Maybe the music needs to be gothic opera style.
Id like to see another theme song.
Fighters only fight who they should fight(Subby wouldnt fight Sonya). He would fight baraka, smoke, noob, shinnok, and most of the evil characters. Maybe the fight ladder should have a story line itself but it would be diff for every character.
Say you are playing as the sub-boss or the boss. You shouldnt fight yourself at the end. The should bring in a Good version of the bosses to fight and kill for realm domination.
No stage fatalities in round 1. No fatalities in round 2 for the loser of round one.
Maybe you can spare someones life instead of using a fatality. Dont bring back friendship tho. Use Something a lot better.
Mini games arent dark enuf.
Video endings would be cool.
