I highly doubt that they did a crossover game because they couldn't think of more "original" characters. No offense, but this one has to be the dumbest rant I've heard so far.

No offense. I'm definitely not trying to be rude. However, this is what the Rant thread is for. I'm new to the forums, but that much is pretty clear.

I second that. I'd also like to add that a lot of characters from the earlier MK games didn't have much originality and only a certain fraction of them have developed into something much more. I think several of the new characters from the Vogel era are better than the likes of several characters from the Tobias era, and if the MK team stick the dark, mystical, magical, and mythological themes and really try to think of interesting dynamics, they can still produce characters.

Actually, the MK team have already confirmed they were working on MK8 for many months before DC approached them for the potential crossover. Boon even released some of their conceptual work for new characters, including this bio...

I'm pretty sure quality control isn't a big obstacle for the gang over at the MK team. I really don't think a creative roadblock was ever going to be an issue...

I don't think that was it. My theories as to why:

1. Boon even said he wanted a cross-over game so when he got a chance he took it without thinking properly

2. They were working on a story and decided that for whatever reason they wanted to do a cross-over as MK's big introduction to the next gen.

3. This is just to buy time for ideas on a real MK game.

Personally, I think it went down like this.

"Mr. Boon, we're from DC. All our video games suck. Anyway, Marvel had some success when they fought those Street Fighter guys. You interested in having Batman fight Sub-Zero?"

"Er, well kinda."

"Remember that lots of people like Batman."

"He's got a movie coming out.... sure to make millions."

"We can't have any of your characters killing him though."

MK can't sell that well anymore. It's out of the spotlight for quite sometime now. That's the way to bring it back, and well, they actually did a good job of making people talking about it.

Now, on the topic at hand. I disagree with the topic, I feel that Midway did it to do what they said they'd do " do something different, change that would shock people" and so it did. It's excited people to the point of orgasm, while bothered others to the point of near suicide. Funny really....but seriously, just like any MK game or fighting series for that matter. They have made characters that some fans like, and others dislike.

We'll see new characters again once MK goes solo again, most likely it will be MK9.

It never hurts to be cynical...frankly, I don't find it hard to imagine that scenario for some reason...but I will say this:

Being both a whiz at English and a MK veteran, when it comes to character originality, I can almost discern immediately just what influenced a character's creation. I don't mean to sound like some expert here; it's rather easy to do.

Take for instance my favorite, Raiden: his namesake is obviously from Shinto mythology, as there is an actual thunder god with that name, only he is a demon god. The Raiden you see (for the most part, and I say that simply because the new direction they're taking him in might be a more demonic turn) looks more like a Taoist god more than anything...not to mention he looks a hell of a lot like the Storms from "Big Trouble in Little China," from which you get MY namesake, Jack Burton.

You see? With a little research, you can take the originality out of almost anything.

And that's what Jack Burton has to say at this time.

You know, the more I read this message, the more I sort of buy into it. Maybe Boon didn't realize at first he'd have to make the game earn a "T" rating from the ESRB? My solution for that is to have two versions of the game released: one for the younger DC fans, and the other for the hardened MK veterans. Since it would probably cost a lot to do such a thing, it probably won't happen...just wishful thinking on my part.

Hell, I'm a writer...maybe they've all hit some sort of writer's block and took this job to buy time for the real MK8? I don't know. I've never really viewed this MK vs. DC thing to be an authentic MK8, and I don't think anyone else should do that just yet. When you throw in DC characters or any other characters from franchises outside of the MK universe, it ceases to be authentic; all you're left with is a crossover game.

I have to agree with MKFL with this one. Yeah, so we have the ability to see what this game is like before it actually comes to our hands or comes out with more trailers and rate that it sucks... yeah, why bitch about something that's in the prossess of making?

A long time ago, before Deception even came out, I was asking myself what happened if MK did crossovers. Marvel vs. Capcom was a good game, and no one bitched about how Capcom does crossovers or SNK. But you guys are not even giving this game a single chance. Oh, we got one tiny little post about the game being a crossover, oh and we also got a little trailer that didn't show that much about the game. Yeah, and you wonder why all of your ranting threads get closed right away.

See, if you guys actually gave this game a chance and stop thinking that it's the end of an era with MK becuase it's going on a "different" path at the current moment, you guys probably couldn't wait until this fall.
