Then you paid $50 for 12 characters. edit: You don't think you should have to unlock them via konquest? Next you're going to tell me that all RPGs should include an option to start off at level 99. That in a mission in Grand Theft Auto, you just hit a button to take yourself to a far-away waypoint. That every game should have unlimited continues (hell, unlimited lives... or health). Basically, you're saying that you don't want to work to get what you want. Well guess what? You have to. If that bothers you, buy a cheat utility (gameshark, codebreaker, whatever the hell they are these days). You wouldn't have had to touch konquest with one of those.

Wow, for a guy with only 16 visits to this web-site, he sure does try to put people in their place quick. I believe the point that the guy who is complaining a bit about Konquest is trying to get at is that at the heart of Mortal Kombat is a fighting game. Yea, we all like the extras, but it's been a fighting game since day one. MK has been pulling away from it's core since Midway wanted to start branching out, example: Mytholigies and Shaolin Monks. The guy has a right to complain when MKD doesn't have as many fighters as current fighting games, and the way to get a few extra characters is really lame anyway. Liu Kang wasn't hard to find, remember all you had to do was fight him back in Earthrealm ( which you should have been interested in going back to in the first place since the place he was located was locked), his alternate outfit was hard to find, but does that really change how I play the game, no. Someone said we shouldn't complain because MK2 had 12 fighters...are you serious?! Every game back then had 12 fighters, as does every game now has almost 32 or more, except for Mortal Kombat! I really hate to sit here and argue like this with you, it is childish to say the least, but really, this game is incomplete in many ways. The game engine could have been better, but I liked it because it was familiar and easy to pick up. There could have been more characters, to keep up with it's main competition like SNKvsCapcom. I'd even venture to say Tekken could pick up it's roster too, but they haven't expanded their storylines and characters that much from the first one, I don't expect much from them anyway. Everything just felt too much like it did in MKDA, nothing felt new really. So yea, it was a letdown.

Dear Users,

We are very excited about how well Fight Night went yesterday evening. I'd just like to clear up a few issues.

1. Are there Super Unlockables? - No
2. Does the WQ Koffin mean anything? - No
3. Are there any other characters outside the 24? - No
4. Are there any other puzzle fighters? - No
5. Is there a GameCube PAL release? - No
6. Is Mortal Kombat Deception still a kick ass game? - Yes

The questions were all cleary answered throughout the chat. Was there some joking around? Sure! It was a blast. People need to realize that developers like to joke around, but the reason why there was so much of it last night is simple. They couldn't believe how far people look into glitches. Perfect example being the WQ koffin, walking on air, etc. The point is, they decided to have some fun with it, but in the end they answered all your questions, and more.

Also, Ed Boon never lied. Sure he said there would be superunlockables outside of the 24 back in May. Things change! If you had any clue what the development of a game is like, you would know that things can change entirely either due to better ideas, or time constraints. He wasn't lying five months ago, but sometimes things just don't turn out how they orginally planned. Honestly I'm proud of the game's accomplishments and how the chat went. If this chat was held anywhere else, the answers wouldn't have been any different. When it comes down to it, I think people are mostly upset just because they didn't get the answers they wanted. You wanted Ed Boon to say there was super unlockables and that WQ was really a koffin. Well sorry guys, it isn't. You need to stop living in denial. There's always the next MK smile

Anyway, heh, we expected people complaining regardless of how the chat went, and considering the complaining is far less than 2002. The chat was organized great, everything went as planned. We're very happy how the event went, we had a great time, the team had a blast, and we can't wait for the next Fight Night in Fall 2005!!!!!!!!

GO MK!

Yes, the game is great. No, the chat was crap.

You ask us to submit questions, then choose a select few from about every aspect of MK - even a Q about concerns voiced a decade ago!

Next time I suggest you ask for the submission of questions MUCH sooner, then select the best 50 or so and create a poll, so us users - the ones the whole chat is supposed to be for - can vote on which ones we want asked / answered.

I expected that the MK team would be cryptic in their answers, but once you got a semi-answer you guys just moved onto a completely different topic, with not even a shred of persistence used to attain an answer that was deserved.

And you say that it was really the answers that we were disappointed with. Fine, maybe that's part of it, but why were there no improvised questions on an explanation of why there are no superunlockables or added puzzle fighters etc.

It just seemed as if you guys were so happy that they showed u around and had lunch w/ em, that you neglected to ask any controversial questions that may have stirred up some interesting answers.

Nothing about the terrible quality of MAT2 was asked of
them, only a 'beat around the bush' question of the Smoke problem in MK2.

And fuckin fanboy Q's about Sub Zero and Smoke, wtf? I AM a big SMoke and Subby fan, but with so few questions being asked in total, please dont waste them on fan boy Q's.

I heard a suggestion on the fourms that 'Fight Night' should be scrapped in favour of a straight up interview. Perhaps that should be looked into for the next edition.

I am appreciative of the idea, but honestly it was poorly coordinated, organized and overall a waste of about an hour.

Weak man, weak...

There aren't too many 3D games with ENORMOUS sets of rosters. Most of the high-count games are 2D, such as MVC2 and the King of Fighters titles.

DOA, Virtua Fighter, and even Soul Calibur don't have the numbers that those games do.

!st of all, I found very little wrong with the MK conversions on MAT2, aside from some shadow flicker, and some sound blaring/overlap (Xbox version, anyway)

2nd, they said they weren't in charge of the MAT2 conversion process, so it wasn't their call. Another team handled the project.

Everyone has the right to think and feel whatever they please; just like I like the game a lot, it was a letdown for you; and that's normal. However, the game has 24 fighters, that was the promised feature: "24 Fighters". Then EVERYONE knew the number of players from almost day 1; and in the end before the game got released everyone knew the whole roster before it came out. I love the characters that are in the game, and I think that the best ones are in there. Some were left out, for example Sheeva, etc. I would have preferred to have characters like those(Sheeva, Fujin, etc) than the Deadly Alliance characters in Deception, why?; because we already played with them in Deadly Alliance!; and the game like "Deadly Alliance Reloaded". That's why I always found useless having Kenshi, Raiden, Li Mei, or any other character coming from MKDA(even though they are a bit different) when they could've brought back many other characters from previous games.

But still, I love the game. I love all the modes, it's pretty damn fun and I think it does add some new things to the MK franchise. I spent 60+ for the game and for me it was worth it. I have much more fun playing this game than playing both Virtua Fighter & Tekken combined...but of course, that's just me.

Scott Howell should read most of what Ed Boon really says. Its just a bunch of mixed up words used to mess us up.

If you 'haven't read the there are secret characters' thread then check this out.

Ed-Boon> Well, there are not any additional hidden selectable characters on the MAIN MENU

Good thing he didn't say character select screen.

Ed-Boon> I think there are a TON of hidden features in the game, but NOT ALL of them are additional characters

He didn't say none, he said not all. Meaning at least 1.

In response to the original post...Yes, Ed Boon did lie to us.

Ed Boon was quoted as saying that there would be unlockable characters beyond the 24 on the select screen.

Now, we have found out, that there are no characters to be unlocked, beyond the 24 on the select screen, I don't know how that can be passed off as something that is NOT a lie? How is that not a lie? he told us one thing, and gave us another?

Am I bad-mouthing this game? No, I love this game, but no matter how you spin it, Ed Boon lied.

The "Well, it's really hard to develop a game and it takes SO much time to create characters and storylines" line, is not an excuse, and will not be accepted. Why? Well....how many Mortal Kombat games has Ed Boon made? This wasn't the first, last time I checked, and this wasn't the first true 3D kombat game...DA was...and they didn't add any HUGE innovations to the fighting engine, other than the combo breakers (that's an improvement, again, not badmouthing it). I simply do not want to hear about the "There wasn't enough time" non-sense....they knew what the deadline would be...it's not old news, Midway always wants to push the game out...so don't tell us, "Yes, there will be characters beyond the 24 on the select screen" if you aren't 100% positive that there will be. He's been through this enough before...he should know better, just simply say "I don't know yet."

I love the game as is...but please don't try to spin this as if Boon didn't lie...he answered the "beyond 24" question a few months before the game came out, with a yes...but didn't positively know for sure if there would be...that's classified as a lie, ignorance is not an acceptable excuse.

I am pretty sure that even if Boon sat everyone of us down, went through the entire code with us and we were shown there are no SU we would still not believe him.

Heck, even if all the MODs here, the Pope, Ghandi, and God all came down and told us there were no SU we would still call them liars.

That's fine. Denial makes the world go round. Yes I do believe that there were alot of unanswered clues or what not dropped by Boon and the gang but we won' t know for some time what is real and what isn't. Remember the game is called Deception after all. Maybe the Mods here are all in a big joke on us... (please don't take me serious)

No offense man, but reread what you just wrote. If that's not a lie, then what is? Of course "things change;" that's life. If a promise is only valid for the exclusive moment in which it's made, then what's the point? Unless you're sure you can deliver, don't make the promise.

Peter Molyneux made an apology to Fable fans for features, which he had previously promised, that didn't make it into the final game. Ed Boon basically made fun of MK fans who were desperately looking for secrets he had promised, but don't actually exist. What a class act...

I can understand plans changing back in May, but the actual "super unlockables" quote was NOT from May. That quote was in Gamepro in September. Surely the roster was finalized by then. Perhaps Gamepro misquoted him somehow, but there is no way plans changed that late.

That said, I've never actually believed in any more characters or any of the wild theories. So no, I didn't hate fight Night because I am pissed we didn't get them confirmed. So no, I'm not in denial. The only ones who seem to be in denial are the staff trying to call it a huge success. I'm sure YOU had a blast, but a hour of just sitting there watching OTHER PEOPLE goof around is not exactly tons of fun.

As for the secrets in MKD, I've never understood the argument that they "don't count". What is the difference between Smoke in MK3 and Hotaru in MKD? Smoke is clearly on the selection screen every once in a while. Smoke is seen in the credits every time you beat it. Smoke is in the story, especially Sub-Zero's ending. He's even in the instruction booklets for some versions of the game. It is no huge surprise that Smoke is in the game. The only real difference is that Smoke is unlocked using a series of random symbols and Hotaru is unlocked by finding a hidden treasure chest.

I think a lot of people don't actually remember the past several MK games. We haven't had a well hidden secret character since H. Smoke in arcade UMK3 back in 1995. Chameleon/Khameleon, Noob, Goro, Sektor, Blaze and Mokap were all found either the day of release or in most cases before the game had even shipped. Liu Kang is the best kept hidden character in in a LONG time. It's been ages since the community had to actually come together and actively search for something, instead of it being in a guide or being leaked before release. Yet for some reason this game will be remembered as having "no secrets".

Here are some of my thouhts.

1. Everyone is trying to discourage us and make us believe that there are no more SUs so that we will stop searching. They will wait until the game is released in other parts of the world in a few weeks then decide to tell us something. This prevents us from finding anything that would be concidered an "su" and spreading it on the internet, ruining suprises for the people who have yet to recieve the game. (this one is unlikely)

2. There are no Secret Characters as everyone states so technically they are not lying to us, but there are other secrets that have yet to be found... such as secret battles.

3. There was originally going to be SU's in MK:D, but then midway decided to release it on GC. So they take SU's away from ps2 and xbox MK:D and makes these characters playable in the GC version to make up for no online and to actually sell it on GC. (I hope this isn't it.)

Personally I think with the amount of content in Deception that there really is a chance they didn't do any SUs. I think people need to be grateful for Deception as it is, having more content than any MK game in MK's history. I also think people need to come out of denial and realize there's a very good chance that there isn't going to be anything more. If there is, that's great, but I think everyone got their hopes up way too early and too fast without any solid evidence. Everything about SU's up until tonight has been nothing but specularion and false rumors. Alot of people have gotten themselves worked up and believing in something that they really have no proof exists and no reason to believe other than that they want it to. They get mad at those of us who are being realistic and defensive, but we all know that the defensiveness comes from the fact that they know in the back of their mind there's a very good chance they're completely wasting all of their time, and ours, by searching or discussing SUs and further secrets. I won't deny that I think there are some secrets, but I think it's not going to be anything too surprising or impressive, and I think those searching for them, upon finding them, will be let down. The secrets in past Mortal Kombats have never been anything great. Cyborg Smoke has to be the best MK secret that was playable they ever made. People are expecting way too much from an already excellent and beyond exceptional game. There are alot of characters people want to see develop further stories. Rain, Sektor, Sheeva, Kintaro, Stryker, Fujin. They may not be SU's, but keep in mind, the MK team has no problem bringing back old characters. Someday you may see them again as Arcade mode characters. Until then, be patience, and be sensible. The denial around here is just astonishing, and the stupidity level really makes me ashamed to be part of this community, and I believe we need smarter people to represent this excellent website. Everyone needs to straighten up, accept the facts, and go on with their lives. It's not the end of the world, there's more Mortal Kombat games to come. If you want the characters so bad then go play the MK games they're actually in.

Yah like calling people stupid is classy. In MKDA people didn't want to belive they really made a game without pit fatalities for the very first time. They didn't want to belive there really was only 1fatalitiy per character. Why because they had concept art of it in the krypt and it seam like a big step back. With level designs and artwork to fuel the idea that there was content in the game that wasn't, its no wonder people didn't buy that the content wasn't in the game. People weren't stupid they were just giving people the wrong idea.

Fans arn't running around looking for things that arn't there just for the hell of it. They were looking for more stuff because they were all told there would BE more stuff. Beliving the makers of the game were telling you the truth doen't make people stupid. Gullibal maybe, but not stupid. People want there to be more because they enjoy the hunt. When all the work fails to pay off then they feel like they have been dupped and it was all for nothing. Probably because it is.

Its not strange or odd for people to want to see thier favorite characters in the game. The game has changed alot. Going back and playing old versions is not the same as having those characters in the new fighting engine. Why would people want to play with Fujin in MKD when they can just play him in MK4? Gee, they must be stupid or something. Its not like MK4 suck or anyt...Oh wait it did.Teasing with Fujin kinda sucks because while people like the character he has never been in a good MK game.

All that was said was there were no more characters to play with. As far as fightable characters and other stuff that might be tucked away somewhere, they are still possible. That was my impression from the chat anyway. So if people want to spend thier own time looking for those things why should anyone else care? If they are still looking for stuff when MK13 is out, then feel free to call them stupid. Till then just leave people alone.

This from that website posted above
The quote from Ed Boon is as follows received on 27th October 04.

"The main grid of characters is going to be 24, but there will be more. We wanted to add things that may not even be apparent on the select screen. Things such as achieving certain goals, some in two player modes of Kombat and Online Kombat and some things in Puzzle and Chess Kombat. So there will be many hidden features in Deception. Not all of them will be additional characters, however, there will be additional characters to MK Deception. But it will be hard to find them."
