The game gave me an absolutely horrible first impression. I haven't done too much yet, so I know it will get better, but after being extremely disappointed with the character creation (utter crap, don't try to tell me otherwise) and spending the first four hours bored out of my mind (while unfortunately still in awe of Uncharted 3's scenery) ... I was not pleased. I'm going to have to assume I will enjoy the shit out of this game, but damn... That left a sour taste in my mouth.

Okay. So this game is massive. I've played for about seven hours total and haven't even seen the tip of the iceberg. The midnight release was nothing like the Batman and Mortal Kombat ones I went to. Hundreds of neckbeards showed up and they sang and danced gayly upon the streets. No seriously, I must have heard the Skyrim song at least fifty times that night. Quiet the site.

MK characters should know their place next to the Elder Scrolls.

Warning, the PC version sometimes glitches out if you have a peculiar brand of graphics cards. The best way is to download the Skyrim compatibility drivers from the net.

So far it looks like a contemporary Oblivion, only the atmosphere got better. And that is good. Nothing revolutionary though.

As for my first Elder Scrolls game, the experience has been...interesting.

Combat seems to favor spells and long ranged weapons, as closed-range weapons seem like they're swinging only air.
On the PC, you can't select different sub-menus with your mouse. What's up with that?
I'm getting lost in the leveling-up process, but I'm sure I'll get used to it eventually.

Oh, and fuck Giants.

The close range weapon thing was a problem with Oblivion, it was immensely irritating to swing your weapon and feel like nothing is happening. They said they fixed that in this one, but they didn't. It's just as irritating to swing a damn sword as it was in Oblivion.

I agree, the experience is interesting...

I have really high opes for the game, but so far it has done very little but get on my nerves... The dungeons look great though, I'm really excited to find them all, since they are hopefully no longer just cut/paste jobs.

Rented this from Redbox and have been enjoying it so far. Playing strictly in 3rd-person mode makes the experience a little more enjoyable...for me anyhow.
Alternating between a Thief and a Mage so far. I'm already having some of the same immersion problems I had with Fallout/Oblivion but I agree, the dungeons are a LOT more fun to explore this time around.

I'm surprised at how similar it feels to Oblivion.

Maybe I shouldn't be- it's the direct sequel, after all.

Thats not a bad thing, either, as I never got to enjoy Oblivion to the fullest.

High Elf Stealth Wizard FTW.
I was Dunmer in Oblivion, but I decided I wanted as much Magicka as Elvenly possible this time wink
I made my guy pretty dark though, with the explanation that he's half Dunmer.

Getting to fight and kill Dragons is certainly a fun addition, no question.

It honestly feels more like a proper Morrowind sequel to me. With some Daggerfall atmosphere thrown in.

I was worried they would make this a massive game with a small amount of content, like Fallout. I'm glad they didn't. It still feels like a true Elder Scrolls game, and I love it.

Since I cannot run it,... what makes you say that?

Hopefully not the bugs. I saw the pathfinding for NPC companions is buggy.

It's hard to explain. I think it's mainly the environment and atmosphere. The world feels lived in, like everything has a purpose, as in Morrowind. Thought was actually put into dungeons, unlike the randomly generated ones in Oblivion. There's just a sense of wonder and discovery that the last game lacked. The Daggerfall comparison really comes from the awesome inns and taverns. They really did a good job there.

Mechanics wise, the basic combat does feel more like Oblivion, but the fact that spells must be "equipped" feels more like Morrowind to me. Dialogue definitely feels more like Morrowind. The races once again look and act differently. Radiant story and random quests offer some Daggerfall randomness and endless re-playability.

Overall, the game takes the best aspects of Morrowind, Oblivion and Fallout 3, and feels more like an Elder Scrolls game than Oblivion ever did.

I just got my copy yesterday. Haven't had a lot of time with it, only about 20 mins. So far. I'm just hoping the action picks up a bit.

I may pick up the strategy guide after work today, to get a better idea about leveling and the different classes before I get too far in. Right now I started off as the Nord race, but I'm not sure if I want to stick with it.

The levelling system is *much* simpler than Oblivion's.
Stats have been simplified quite a bit,
and the only real "strategy" to gaining levels this time
is making sure your skill levels are up to the level you need for whatever Perk you may want.
Oblivion's insane stat increase system is gone, thank Talos!

Walked around like the Orc bad ass I was until I saw two Giants just chilling with each other, smokin' a bowl and I come waltzing up with my shitty bow only to plant a few arrows into one of their skulls. Fucker chased me down and proceeded to have his way with me...

I take back everything I said about this game. It's pretty addicting hahahaha.

I'm really glad they got rid of the attributes crap (i.e. Personality, Willpower, Luck.) Albeit, that stuff still exists, but it has more to do with which race/gender you picked and your playstyle.

I seriously feel that Daggefall touch in this game. It almost made me sad walking up to some ominous castle ruins through a misty field. It felt so nostalgic...
I only wish they'd have those little messages pop up when you fast travel to a location, like before.
(It's nice that you can hear the old Morrowind music in this game (though I think you could in Oblivion, too.))

This game is so much harder than Oblivion that it took me by surprise several times. I was getting my ass beat here and there, until I got smart and got a follower.

I'm completely addicted to this game, and I've barely scratched the surface..... However, I'm really pining to play Daggerfall again.

Level 27.

I honestly love the gameplay improvement. It actually feels as if you are in a sword fight with an actual sword, rather than a sock 'em bopper blow up sword. Many complaints about Oblivion were the simple "swing away Merril" mechanics in Oblivion. Skyrim implemented smarter AI, timing, staggering, weapon weight consideration, and a strong sense that your mortality is universally at risk until at least level 25. Even still, you are the potential bitch of a handful of the deadlier enemies.

The environment truly feels alive. It works outside of your character. If you go up north, you'll see snow bears raiding the beaches of a herd of horkers. (seal/walrus creatures.) Wolves will hunt down deer. Dragons will swoop down to attack bears. The blizzards and resulting fog will slow down your character, as will the strong current the river flows with. Yesterday, I saw a hunter riding his horse along the trail outside of a dungeon. Upon spotting a rabbit, he left his horse to chase the critter down. Immediately, the horse took off without his rider, and I laughed my ass off as the hunter unknowingly continues after the rabbit. About a minute later, I saw what spooked the horse: two big ass spider ran out of the dungeons, right towards the hunter. I figured the dude was already having a bad enough day by being stranded by a horse, so I would save him from being eaten by thse friendly eight legged critters. It's this type of npc to npc interaction that makes me feel lost in another world. I loved Oblivion, but everything in Cyrodiil seemed all about you.

One thing I noticed is how much the troll's appearance improved. I remember in Oblivion they looked like green gorillas only smaller. Now they look scary and threatening. Even though I just throw firebolts at them so they can't even touch me. But yes my favorite thing in Skyrim is to hunt trolls.

Another reason I enjoy Skyrim more than Oblivion is because I feel like I did things right in Skyrim. I learned magic, beat the story quests, bought a house. So this time around I did things right.

Being a vampire in the sunlight truly fucking sucks. You're health drops down, so does stamina and magic. I became one and was trying to figure out how to cure it and I waited too long and became a feared and hated by all vampire. Fucking sucked. Everybody tried to kill me. I found out how to cure myself and it was this dude in Morthal I think. Trouble is, I couldn't even get near the place without people trying to kill me. When I figured out I had to drink blood to recede my vampire powers, it felt alive when I had to do this little task. Not just waiting and then bolt in the door and jump on the sucker. I seriously had to watch the guards pattern, wait for the person to go to sleep, sneak away from the house into the shadows and crawl to it from the back, wait for the guard to walk away and then lockpick the farm door and then sneak my way into the womans room and then drink her blood all without getting caught by the guards or the woman waking up. That part right there made me feel as if I was a vampire truly needing some blood and didn't want any conflict. It was fucking awesome.

So, I found a sunken ship at the bottom of the ocean and need some water breathing stuff to explore it.... And that pretty much means playing this game was worth it. I explored underwater in Oblivion..... I found nothing. This game makes Oblivion look so terrible, (I already despise that game and grade the greatness of other games largely based on whether or not they are Oblivion). Anyone else get to see the aurora over the ocean near Winterhold (I think it was Winterhold.....)? That was a fun way to be greeted. I'm still disappointed with quite a bit about this game, but it has its moments.

Level 34, 69 hours into the game and I couldn't be happier! I've been raping with spells mostly, although some mages i've seen have hit me with some ridiculous spells to 1-3shot me. Now it's about time I train my 1 handed. I've black smithed enough to be able to create and improve my favorite type of armor/weapon (glass). So far, it's completely shitting on oblivion. Amazing game, amazing fucking game!

Also, still! FUCK GIANTS!
