It's funny, me and my brother have been replaying Oblivion lately and our characters couldn't be any more different.

My character: Aleda the Imperial. Deadly assassin, Listener for the Dark Brotherhood, slayer of mortals.

Brother's Character: Raleigh the Redguard. Noble adventurer, Commander of the Knights of the Nine, slayer of demons.

It doesn't list the race, but this one is either a Breton or an Imperial. My guess is the latter. Regardless, he is one mean son of a bitch.

Nord. 7. Orc. 8. Redguard. 9. Wood Elf. 10. High Elf. Also, Skyrim has been officially rated as MATURE with Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Sexual Themes, and Use of Alcohol.

Forgive the double post, but Bethesda released some major screenshots for their character presets. Meaning all ten races, male and female.

I dont want to be "that guy" but I'm not expecting to have a religious experience playing this game. Like you said OP, you can gauge how much you're hyped for Skyrim based on Bethesda's previous approach to game design and for me...that doesn't bode well. I know people herlad Fallout for it's sprawling massive interactive world but for me, that game got old really fast and felt more redundant than innovative.

Morrowind was fun and I enjoyed that on my Xbox but Oblivion on the 360 got old pretty fast as well. Bethesda's digital worlds, while remarkably expansive, always lack compelling elements of immersion for me and I stop caring (or outright forgetting) what the main threads are that hold the game experience together. Honestly though, I could forgive all of this if it wasn't for the biggest letdown for me...Bethesda combat systems.

First-person melee is tough to execute sucessfully in a game and this is an area that I feel is always lacking in Bethesda games. It's just not that fun (or often times even viable.) Magic/ranged systems tend to be the "I win" buttons and often times trivialize gameplay challenge. This is satisfying to an extent but again, eventually works towards monotonous predictable gameplay without challenge.

All that said, I'm willing to give Skyrim a shot but I'll wait to rent it from Redbox as I learned my lesson with Oblivion and Fallout.

My biggest fear is that everything is going to be far too simplified. I hate to say "console gaming is ruining everything", but... console gaming is ruining everything. Developers seem to think console gamers are all retarded CoD players and need to dumb everything down for them.

I think the game could use more brown on its brown.

I agree with this, however I must say that simplifying things doesn't neccesarily mean it's being dumbed down. Granted Oblivion WAS dumbed down, and Skyrim likely will be too, but a lot of these hotkey features they are implementing in Skyrim seem to be something meant to improve the immersion of the game experience, rather than making it more elementary.
The combat has been tweaked to feel more natural and less repetitive. I have no doubt things are being dumbed down like weapons types, classes, and skills, but I think Bethesda is being a bit more careful about it this time around. We'll see, but I share a few of the same worries. I want an Elder Scrolls game, not a Fallout with Swords game.

Okay, please excuse the double post, but apparently the pirates at 4chan have discovered a nifty gameplay feature important enough to merit it's own post. I'm putting it in spoilers because it hasn't been officially announced by Bethesda, but it is a nice surprise. If you want to walk in to Tamriel as ignorant as possible, don't read this.

LOL, I was just about to mention reading about this spoiler on 4Chan this morning. Would be awesome if it was true. Your post with all the preset faces has actually gone a long way towards getting me hyped for this game again. Initially I was, and then it kinda faded out over the last couple of months. Still not sure if it will be a day 1 purchase for me but I will definitley get it at some stage.

I'm going to go Nord, because that's how I roll. I'm going to complete all the sidequests I can and beat the game one time. after which I expect replay value to be zero and I will go back to battlefield 3 until diablo releases.

Two swords at one time.... Badass. Can't wait to slay some cat people.
