Need advice on buying a console

posted05/21/2004 10:08 AM (UTC)byI'm thinking on finally buying a console to play fighting games (because they're no longer released on the PC...) and I'm looking for some advice on what console to buy and where to buy it (since prices around here seem a little inflated). Here are the pros and cons so far:
PS2
Price: 199
Pros: MK:DA (25), Tekken 4 (30), VF4 Evolution (40)... and MK: Deception
Cons: Worse graphics
XBOX
Price: 199
Pros: MK:DA (72), DOA3 (31), better graphics... and MK: Deception
Cons: No Tekken, no VF4, MK:DA costs almost 3 times the price of the PS2 version (!!!)
Since I don't even have the kind of money necessary to buy all the games I posted (which are basically the only ones I'm interested in) for each specific console maybe someone could tell me if they are cheaper in UK or US (for US dollars it's easier to compare since the Euro and the US Dollar are practically equal), what would happen if I buy a NTSC version of a console (would I be able to play PAL games/use a PAL screen?). If the price difference is big maybe I'll try to import the console from somewhere else but I really need to know if it's worth it.
Thanks in advance and I'm not interested in GameCubes since MK:Deception won't be released for the GameCube. ;)

I've seen XBox MKDA and PS2 MKDA for £9.99! Which is about $7, which is nearly 6 You can only play NTSC games on a NTSC console, and PAL games on a PAL console, unless you have a freeloader or you have it chipped or whatever. If games up where you are, are expensive, I reccomend you buy a PAL console as they are damn cheap down here

You forgot to add the 'In my opinion' part

Honestly, from theway prices are in your area I would go for the PS2. It may not have the graphical prowess of the XBox, but the difference is hadly significant. Plus, more fighting games!

Thanks for the replies, I'm starting to wish I lived in the UK...
I'm only really interested in fighting games and I'm leaning towards the PS2 at this point (since it has VF4 and probably will have its sequels as well as the Tekken series).
I'm sure there's MK:DA as some sort of "classic series" for the XBOX but I haven't found it for sale so it's probably cheaper than the price I've put on my post since it isn't marked as being part of some "classic series" package. The PS2 version is Platinum Series which I guess is a cheaper version of old games (I'm totally new to these new generation consoles as I left the "console world" when they stopped making games for the Genesis/Mega Drive)...
Thanks for the replies again

Xbox in my opinion is the best console out right now. 150? Halo? And an S-Type Controller?
HALO 2 coming up?
Doom 3?
Mortal Kombat: Deception... and yes I know. Everyone says it'll look the same on both systems but trust me. They won't. Xbox will ALWAYS have better graphics than PS 2. Always. I played Deadly Alliance on Xbox then I played it on PS 2 and its like going from Vida Guerra to Louie Anderson.

True true, XBOX has the best graphics. But then why are most of my games on PS2? Hehe, cuz I just like it better. Seriously, its just a matter of preference. Either console is a good buy. If you want great graphics, go for the XBOX. If you want more fighters, go for PS2. My personal choice would be the PS2, but thats ny choice.

Okay, everyone has been offering their opinions on which is the better system. Each has their advantages and disadvantages. X-Box and PS2 have online play, some say X-Box Live is the better deal, where as some say the same for PS2. My advice, if you can buy both systems, buy both, or try out both, then decide for yourself which one ya like, that's what I did, I tried all three (or in your case 2)then I decided I liked PS2 better, so I got a PS2. Hope this helps ya!

Well I own both systems and I generally play my PS2 more than my X-Box. Why? Graphics may be superior on X-Box, but PS2 has more quality in my opinion.

Thats another thing I forgot to mention. Xbox live, the network is SOOOOOOO much better than the PS 2 network. And the XBOX live network Only supports Broadband which means... no slow 56k users slowing you down which might be the case on PS 2.
Its so much easier to find a friend, send him an invite and to be in a game 10x faster on xbox than ps 2.

Oh right, that online stuff! Forgot all about it hehe How does it work, can you plug your console to your existing broadband connection or do you have to get some dedicated connection or something like that?
Either way I'm not really planning on using it online... and there's no chance I can buy both consoles unless someone gives me some money

Get an Xbox only because it seems to be getting all of the exclusives these days. PS2 hardly has any exclusives anymore - a perfect example is T5 going to the Xbox.

All you do is plug the broadband into the back of the Xbox. What I have is a cable modem so I switch wires when I come back onto the computer and when I go on Xbox live. My cable is in my living room while my Xbox is in my room. So, I drilled a hole in the floor of my closet in my room and ran a wire through the basement, up through the floor, and to the back of the Xbox. There ARE Routers but I haven't had any luck with them. You don't have to have a dedicated connection or whatever you mentioned.

I just bought a 2nd hand Dreamcast for Aus $85 and i have recently acquired SF3 Double Impact and 3rd Strike, Street Fighter 3 Alpha, Marvel Vs Capcom 2 and House of The Dead 2 with the Dream Blaster lightgun for Aus $45. I also got both Sonic Adventure games and MK4 Gold. I play this system all the time and i don't think i will ever play my Xbox or PS2 again until Doom 3 is released over here.

As for Tekken 5 being on Xbox too, I'm questioning that. Gamespot only has it listed as comming to PS2, so until the company states otherwise I wouldn't go counting on that just yet. Although on the other hand everything else seems to be going to Xbox including EA's sports games going live so it's certainly possible.

You may have noticed I don't live anywhere near the US. It's common practice around here to inflate prices since we already are less paid than everybody else in the friggin' world they find it funny to make us have to live in the limits of poverty.
