Oh man, that was stupid. Did you know that people actually produce their beats? It's no different than playing an instument.

Lil Jon is a rookie to Rap (I think). I am talking about Old School Rap.

Beats big deal you know how easy it is to make those so called ""beats"" its not like making a song up using a guitar that takes alot more.Besides most rappers steal old music and sample it.Aka P diddy ect...

I can't think of too many rappers that have some reasonable lyrics. In this case lyrics ARE a big deal because if the lyrics aren't put together well... you have nothing left to enjoy- you cant enjoy the artificial beat, you cant enjoy the rythum, because thats really all that is left. |
Why can't you enjoy the "artificial" beat and rhythm? Maybe most of the music and beats created digitally, so there's no musician playing it, but playing it is only half the battle; you have to write it too.
Psyclobex, listen to "I Can" by Nas. In general I really don't like rap, but I have to say "I Can" is a really good song;. For one thing, the music it uses (Beethoven's Fur Elise) is one of my favorite classical pieces; second, it has good lyrics with a positive message. That's not what most people associate with rap, but it's out there.
Anyway, I prefer rock; I listen to a lot of metal, punk, and hardcore, and I've been playing guitar (mainly in the aforementioned styles) for about 5 years now. Rock is a big part of my life.

Depends. It is not about beats, it is about lyrics. And what terms you put the lyrics into. Lyrics can come from the heart, or you can put together babbling statements. So many NEW rappers, Rap about stuff that is absolute bullshit. Others Rappers abuse it by making disses(sp?). That is what disappoints me the most. They way it lost its reputation. I grew up listening to rappers like Eazy-E, and yet I am still into it.

I like them both.Rap is crappy now.Rap was perfect in the late 70's all the way untill 1997.In 1997 rap died out thats when MTV started cashing in on Rap.I look at rap and rock the same way they both require talent. They both have there pop sides(the bad sides).I still hate the fact that Rock and Rap are in the mainstream now. They have to water down their lyrics now which sucks so it can appeal to those Teen boppers.
Rap just sucks now.It sounds like techno. The people who own these rap labels know nothing about rap music. Most of them are old people who say rap is supposed to be rapping about your jewelry.Thats what MTV thinks. It makes me sad to see it fall this way.I hope Rock dosen't fall as hard as Rap.

I prefer rock over rap. I listen to both and I agree most rappers are horrible lyricists. Now what im about to write, I know everyone will disagree and flame me. Eminem and Tupac are really the only rappers I listen too, and I think Eminem is a better lyricist. Hold up, listen to what I have to say first before you flip out and say im retarded. Eminem has a better vocabulary and uses metaphors where Pac really doesnt (give me an example if Pac does). Anyway, I think the big reason Pac is considered the greatest is because he died and Eminem is a clown because hes white.

Yeah if 2pac never died people would have hated him like he was when he was alive.I like Eminem but his songs are getting kind of repeative now.His beats all sound the same.

At First, I loved Rap, in the 90's, but then it just started getting crappy and all and well I turned to Rock, and I always had Hated it, but I was suprised, and I havent stopped listening! As the other guy says, Rock doesnt get old, you listen to once song in 2004, and decide to listen it again for the first time agin in2005, It would be Kick-ass! BUT, there are still Good Rappers out there...You can't Deny it! And Im really getting ticked off because Ill these Rap Lovers are saying that Rock sucks, or, its just screaming the words, and Im sick of Rock Lovers saying that you dont need talent for Rap! Everybody is entitled to their own opinion, Some people prefer Rock, and some people prefer Rap! You cant take that away from them! I like them both, but...well... I like Rock WAY more! Im not Hating on Rap, it still has some good Rappers.
But hey, remember this, Elect me for President 2036, I WILL legalize Marijuana!
But hey, remember this, Elect me for President 2036, I WILL legalize Marijuana!
I can say that I like both rock and rap equally. As a hobby, I do a fair amount of MC'ing, and it is no picnic.
But what I hate as far as rap music goes, is that every mainstream artist raps about the same stuff as everybody else. The beats are the same, the videos are the same, the lyrics are the same. Hip-hop is not like this, and it never was intended to be like this. Hip-hop is intended to keep things positive, and to be about the good times, not slamming b*tches and ho's.
My favourite hip-hop acts are Brethren, Freddie Bruno, Playdough, Ill Harmonics, .rodlaver, GRITS, Hoodsta, John Reuben & Tunnel Rats.
By the same token rock has gone downhill as well. Every second band you hear today sounds like Creed. The same riffs, slightly different vocals, and similar song structure. Most modern rock puts me to sleep because, in the words of my last girlfriend: "Seen it all before - only bigger"
Rock has to be kept original and fresh, that's why I appreciate what bands such as Blindside, Switchfoot, AnBerlin and The Benjamin Gate are doing. They are taking rock and twisting it. Personally, because of the monotony of the modern rock bands, I've gone to the heavier side of the spectrum. I'm currently digging Sevendust, Pillar, Project 86, Filter, Evanescence & Mars Volta.
I demand originality and imagination in the music I listen to. Acts such as 50 Cent, Jay-Z, Creed, D-12, and pretty much all the acts that make the top 40 you see today SUCK. No originality, no imagination, they are doing the same junk over and over again. Bah!

Well, first I'm going to say sorry, rappers, for the piss-poor arguements against you. On behalf of the rockers who know what they're talking about, we respect you for whatever you choose to listen to, even if it's not the same as us.
Second, if it didn't take talent it wouldn't be music.
Third, peace out G home slice unit dog. Word to your mother. Fo shizzle.

Rap.
And for you people that say "OMFG L0zers!!1 rAP IS THE SUCK!!! LMFAO WIGGERZ! IT REKQUIEZ NO TALENT @ ALL LOLOLOL"
Listen to some of these--
Tupac - Life Goes On
Tupac - Dear Mama
Tupac - Changes
Tupac - Starin' at the World Thru my Rearview
Tupac - Broken Wings
Just about any Tupac song, and then still tell me that it requires no talent and is pointless, if you still can -- go kill yourself.
I do agree that most 'new' rappers lyrics are shit, but you cant have a handfull of artists ruin a whole genre of music now can you? Dont find one person (Lil' Jon) and have him represent all rap music, when obviously he does a horrible job on lyrics. Would it be right if I found one horrible rock band, focus on their lyrics, and automatically think all rock is like that? No, because I have a little more common sense then to "judge a book by it's cover", obviously many of you dont.

I learned a long time ago, you can tell a lot about a person by the type of music they listen to. The more they listen, the more open as a person they are.
I listen to everything, and I love rock and I love rap. I buy more rap but I know everything I need to know about rock music.
Rap is a talent and skill. Yes some ppl are fake and whatever, and yes there are ghost-writers, but the same applies to rock.
I'm happy to say I love both, because I have something to listen to all day long (literally).

Oh my gosh, it's such a pity that my favorite artist on this web site, has the most ignorant opinion on music!? WTF man, you pick up a guitar right now, and try to play a song by Van Halen, yeah play "Eruption", you call that a whole bunch of sounds??? Then I want you to buy/burn a song by "Dio" for example "We Rock", and sing that pitch for pitch and note for note. You can't do it, can you??
A bunch of noise, my a$$, that is one of the worst things I have ever heard in my life! The thing is that it's coming from an "ARTIST".
I liked this thread and had the feeling that there wouldn't be any flaming involved but I guess I was fucking wrong! I've never been this pissed off on this forum.
So Go Fucking Figure! In The Name Of Rock N Roll!
-You're Pissed off friend, Max.
dont take my opinion the wrong way...
but its alot harder to play a guitar, bass, drums (etc) then make a beat
yes rap does take talent, but making the beats is mainly a high hat, snare, and bass drum.. not hard
i prefer rock... not many ppl here like the same stuff i like (pop punk/punk rock) though.
also i think rap is just a fashion statement,
it seems like no one does it for the music, its about the money, the cars, the jewelry..
its not easy making rock music
