- Game of Thrones swordsman joins Star Wars film

Actor Miltos Yerolemou, best known for his role in the first series of fantasy drama Game of Thrones, has joined the cast of Star Wars: Episode VII.

He played expert and athletic swordsman Syrio Forel in Thrones and has taken on several other parts which involve sword fighting during his career.

His extensive experience will inevitably lead to speculation that he may use a lightsabre in the film.

However, his character in Star Wars is not thought to be a major one.

seeing hundreds of Jedi wielding lightsabers in the prequel trilogy was one thing

but the idea of seeing a bunch of non-Jedi/Sith using them all over the place rubs me the wrong way

I hope they bring in vibroblades or something. Lightsabers are special.

In original draft of Star Wars: A new Hope, all Stormtroopers (Shocktroopers back then) used Lightsabers as weapon.

You can see it in the Dark Horse draft Comic.

We're technically at square 7.

And somewhere in the previous squares I believe it was established that only a force user can safely swing a lightsaber without accidentally hacking his own arms off. You need the superhuman reflexes and precognitive ability to safely weild a blade that weighs nothing and can cut through anything like butter.

Han and Grievous safely used lightsabers, although Han only for a second and Grievous had cyborg enhancements. I think it's more of an issue of Jedi having a constant advantage with their increased dexterity and spidey-sense.

Honestly, one of the few things I'd wished they'd've kept from the EU was Boba Fett carrying a lightsaber and being able to use it proficiently. It gave you a bit of an understanding of how his mind works, what makes a fair fight, and how much he hates the Jedi. Now, I know I could say Boba Fett's survival is the one EU element I'd save, but come on -EU or not, fanboy-rioting will force it to be canon.

- Industrial Light and Magic opens UK studio to work on new Star Wars trilogy

Industrial Light and Magic, the special effects company founded by George Lucas, has opened its first studio in the UK to begin work on the new Star Wars trilogy.

The company, which was included in Disney’s £2.4bn purchase of Lucasfilm in 2012, was set up in 1975 by the Star Wars creator to pioneer groundbreaking special effects in his original space saga.

Almost 40 years on, the division will once again oversee all the visual and special effects for the upcoming new instalments of Star Wars, most of which will now be done in the new London studio.

With filming on the revived popular franchise just three weeks away from completion at Pinewood studios in Buckinghamshire, the decision by ILM to expand their operations to London’s Soho means that the new Star Wars films will have even more of a British grounding.

- 'Star Wars: Episode VII' is called 'The Force Awakens'

Star Wars Episode: VII finally has a subtitle: The Force Awakens. Disney quietly announced the title on Twitter this morning — a somewhat strange approach to what is easily the most anticipated film in production right now.

Disney also confirmed reports that filming has wrapped on Episode VII. That doesn't mean it's particularly close to a release, though: the film is still scheduled for December 18th of next year.

I'm still pretty mothafuckin' excited, though!

- 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' trailer to debut Friday in theaters

The first trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens will be debuting in a small number of theaters across the US on Friday. Regal Cinemas announced that the trailer will play before all movies showing at nine of its locations starting this Friday and continuing through the weekend:

CA Irvine — Edwards Irvine Spectrum 22 & IMAX
CA San Diego — Edwards Mira Mesa Stadium 18 IMAX & RPX
GA Atlanta — Regal Atlantic Station Stadium 18 IMAX & RPX
IL Chicago — Regal City North Stadium 14 IMAX & RPX
NY New York — Regal Union Square Stadium 14
PA Warrington — Regal Warrington Crossing Stadium 22 & IMAX
TN Knoxville — Regal Pinnacle Stadium 18 IMAX & RPX
TX Houston — Edwards Houston Marq'E Stadium 23 IMAX & RPX
WA Seattle — Regal Thornton Place Stadium 14 & IMAX

The theatrical premiere is an interesting choice for Disney and Lucasfilm, but it'll get Star Wars straight onto the big screen and during one of the biggest moviegoing days of the year. Regal says this will constitute the trailer's "world premiere," so it really does seem as though you'll need to head out to a movie theater if you want to catch it first. One would imagine that the trailer will be published online eventually, but Disney seems to be interested in kicking things off with a more cinematic experience. (Plus, there's likely a profit motive involved for both it and Regal during this initial weekend.)

Jesus, is that really the explanation they gave it?

Hahaha.

Crossguards on a lightsaber: well it theory it makes it a sword, finally, not a glorified stick. It still looks off though, and still something that is dangerous to the user.

Not really anything solid in the trailer, to be honest. This is jiggling your car keys in fron of the infant.

I got sweet on the idea of hearing a tie fighter scream past - so that was fun.

Still doesn't feel like a whole lot to go on. Change in style is interesting. Should we just get used to new lightsaber gimmicks every movie, now? Not sure about having two mini lazerswords hovering over the hand. Kinda warming up to the new storm trooper helmets. [Was 2014 the year of wintery forests in trailers?]

Fun. Wanna see more.

- Here Are the Three Big Lessons From the 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' Trailer

The fleeting teaser trailer tells us more about contemporary film culture than many audiences may realize.

A nice alternate take to the flood of fandom's cheers & jeers.

Inarticulated trailer. Few things shown, but nothing makes sense. But its generates hype and that what matters at this point. Personally, I am not impressed, but since it's just a teaser, I won't condemn movie of all possible and impossible faults.
One thing, that is clearly visible - it's Abrahams distinct visual style.

Author of the article had forgotten two things - it's just a teaser and that he lives in 2014 not in 1979.

it looks good and i am excited. it looks more like JJ Abrams Star Track then I expected but it is bad to give harsh judgement based on 88 seconds of footage.

You need to level more, so you could immediately see movie for what it is, based on few concept arts and trailers, as its customary for modern "fans". grin

I'm hopeful, this trailer covered all the bases on what a Star Wars movie needs.

Stormtroopers? Check.

Lightsabers? Check.

John Williams score? Check.

Droids? Check.

It's only a trailer but it's a great sign knowing that Star Wars is coming back. This movie is going to rock, J.J. Abrams made me actually like Star Trek, and I have a feeling he's going to knock this movie out of the park. The cast looks stellar and we get to see Luke, Han, Leia, & Chewie all over again.

- 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' character names revealed (in coolest way possible) -- exclusive [MILD SPOILERS]

We finally got to meet some new characters in the teaser trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, but now we’re getting to put some names with the faces.

J.J. Abrams, the film’s co-writer and director, and Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm, have decided to reveal the identities of some of their new characters exclusively to EW—and they’ve done it in a retro fashion that should bring a smile to anyone familiar with the phrase “Collect ‘Em, Trade ‘Em.”

That was the catchphrase of the Topps trading card company, which in addition to baseball players and comic book characters put out a series of collectible cards featuring scenes and characters from around the galaxy for the original 1977 Star Wars movie.

Supremely cool! My favourite trading cards were always the ones that gave you some info about things. This is a great way to get people trading on information and ideas (even just online). Awesome!
