Sucker Punch (the movie)

posted07/04/2011 01:06 AM (UTC)byThe movie Sucker Punch came out today on video, and I don't recall there ever being a thread for when the movie hit theaters, so I guess this can be the official thread. Has anyone else seen the movie & what are your thoughts about it?
I finished watching the movie a little while ago, and I really enjoyed it. Almost nothing but over the top action pieces. The only break in film are for story driven scenes. This movie was directed by the same guy that also directed the Watchmen movie, and is also going to be directing the Superman movie reboot, which I can't wait for after seeing this.
I'm just a little surprised that there wasn't any kind of video game tie for the movie. After watching it, It just seemed so perfect for a video adaption. Something like Devil May Cry or the Afro Samurai game.

Zack Snyder said it was meant to look and feel like a video game.
Making one would defeat that purpose.
He's an okay director, but when you give him the pen and paper (like Sucker Punch) it aint too pretty story-wise.
I am looking forward to Superman, though, simply because he doesn't have to write anything.

This.
My friend and I were suffering throughout the entire movie.
If I could have screamed in exasperation in the theater, I would have.
This movie goes on for an eternity!
As one of my friends told me, "somehow, this movie made hot girls with katanas and miniguns fighting robot nazi zombies and dragons in mechs and fighter jets unenjoyable, depressing, and boring."
For such a silly premise, it just was a very somber, tenuously connected, and ultimately rather pointless movie that, at the very least, looked good. Too bad the movie didn't seem like it was having any fun with its cool premise.

It was very not good '_'

The action scenes were ok and the Soundtrack was good. The covers were instantly recognizable to me and my friend..But the plot itself stunk.
And one more thing...
..Dialogue was cheesy.
And Blue?

Basically the story is:
Spoilers: (Highlight to reveal)
-Girl's mother dies & leaves all her inheritance to girl & her sister
-girl's step-dad gets pissed and tries to beat/rape younger sister
-girl accidentally shoots and kills younger sister while trying to protect her from stepfather
-stepfather has girl committed to insane asylum for a lobotomy to prevent her from telling the cops the truth
-dream sequences when the girl dances to distract asylum staff while other inmates try and acquire needed materials to escape

The dream sequences take place in various sci-fi settings, and are nothing but action. From fighting giant samurais, to steam punk nazi zombies, a dragon, and futuristic robots. The best way to describe the action is to think of the game Devil May Cry. There are elements of Inception in the movie as well. Where the movie goes from being in the asylum, to the girls being whores in a brothel/burlesque theater, and the fantasy sequences.

Some people just didn't understand the plot. People were getting confuse about it but it best to think about it this way. Asylum is real world, Brothel is dream world and when babydoll dance, that dream within a dream.
Yeah, I understood that. I guess I am just disappointed when people can't follow a plot that is clearly given to them. And I'm not just calling you guys out. I originally didn't want to see this movie because Roger and Ebert or whatever (I don't know, their movie reviews play on the subway) said that the movie had no plot or that they couldn't follow it. Then I saw the movie and it was so easy to comprehend. I really don't understand why these dudes are professionals. They've seen so many movies and Sucker Punch is too complicated for them?

Exactly. I mean I can understand a movie like Snatch being hard to follow, but this movie wasn't.

I understood the plot, and so did most of my friends.
The movie was still lacking story-wise, and whether it's hard to follow or not was not the issue for me.
Is there a plot? Yes.
Was it still kinda weak? Yes
You'd think the action would save it, but it wasn't all that great.

Snatch.... hard to follow? Seriously? There's a Russian diamond trying to be stolen by an American, and some lovable cocknies get mixed up in it. That's it.

I know a lot of people that had no idea what Snatch was about, and couldn't follow the movie. Probably the English accents, but still.
