- Dragon Ball Gets 1st New TV Anime in 18 Years in July

Dragon Ball Super, a brand new television anime inspired by Akira Toriyama's Dragon Ball manga, will premiere on Fuji TV and other channels in July on Sundays at 9:00 a.m. This will be the first new Dragon Ball television series since Dragon Ball GT, which aired from 1996 to 1997.

The story of the anime is set a few years after the defeat of Majin Buu, when the Earth has become peaceful once again. The voice of Goku, Gohan, and Goten, Masako Nozawa commented on the new anime, saying, “We've always used the word 'chō' (Super) with Dragon Ball in commercials, games and the like, but the fact that the series titled Dragon Ball Super is beginning is the best thing ever.”

Fuji TV producer Osamu Nozaki commented on the new series as well, saying, “As I read the plot [of the series] I've already received from Akira Toriyama, my dreams for this begin to expand. An enemy even stronger than Buu or Freeza may appear...”

Toriyama is credited as the original creator, as well as for "original story & character concepts." Toei Animation's Kimitoshi Chioka (Hakaba Kitarō, Kamisama Kazoku) is the series director, and Naoko Sagawa (Yomiko Advertising, Inc.) and Atsushi Kido (Toei Animation) join Nozaki as producers. Kido entered Toei just as the company was animating the Dragon Ball Z anime's Freeza arc.

Shamelessly riding on past glory and brings nothing new to the table what has not been done better in the meantime.

I mean sorry, but both Naruto and One Piece have overtaken DBZ. I have fond memories of some of DBZ, ut being the first major shonen only means you are the prototype.

Which means you are the least advanced or properly formed of your kind.... This is a money grab.

What is the difference in this and DC pumping out new Batman comics, movies, toys, and video games all the time?

People consistently say Akira Toriyama is beating a dead horse/milking a cash cow when there are other people doing the same thing.

Naruto was supposed to end, the manga did end, then Kishi came out with the movie called "The Last" yet Kishi has already started another manga (700 +1 is out already) and has already confirmed a new movie about Naruto's son Boruto, what is the difference?

Lol I don't mean to come off as a dick, I just don't see the difference.

Flawed argument. Two wrongs don't make a right. (To say nothing of the vastly different ways both properties exist and thrive). That said...

Isn't Toriyama the hold out? He's the one who hasn't been creating more material for the past two decades! Even when there's been a very strong demand and interest for it, he's usually (and still) a distant participant.

DBZ's later fare was more miss than hit. That's a valid criticism and where the issue reasonably lies. The assumption that it cannot be good again - much less reasonable.

Unless you're summarily dismissive of the entire premise, most creative criticisms are going to be as indicative of how new DBZ can succeed, as much as how it can fail. It's a tough pitch, but we don't know much at this point. Gotta give it a chance.

I'm a little confused, im on the side of "Lets give it a chance people" I absolutely love Dragon Ball, im arguing that its not just some money grab taking advantage of the fans.

Two wrongs don't make a right, but I am not sure Akira Toriyama is even doing a wrong, he is finally giving fans more Dragon Ball, I don't see what's wrong with that.

Akira did hold out for a while, he stopped with Z, and let Toei make GT, he did a few little specials/AMVs and stuff, and finally gave us BOG but I still don't see why its a crime for him to continue the series and is labeled as somebody nickel and diming the fans.

- ‘Dragon Ball Super’ manga to accompany new TV anime

When the first new Dragon Ball television anime in 18 years debuts in July, it will be accompanied by a manga adaptation by Dragon Ball Heroes: Victory Mission author Toyotarō.

According to the announcement in Shueisha’s V Jump the Dragon Ball Super manga will launch in the magazine’s super-sized August issue. Dragon Ball creator Akira Toriyama, who’s credited with the “original story and character concepts” for the new anime, is also credited with the manga’s story.

In addition to Dragon Ball Heroes, Toyotarō also drew the three-part adaptation of the new anime film Dragon Ball Z: Revival of “F.”
