WhenI was a kid I used to think DBZ was the greatest anime ever. Then I watched Rurouni Kenshin and realized I was wrong.

I still love DBZ. Lot of interesting characters and intense action. I would say my favorite saga was the Cell saga.

It has a few moments of dragging, but I don't think the drama gets enough credit. It watches very well more than one episode at a time. It's still a favourite, but my references past the Androids gets very spotty. Maybe it breaks down in those later arcs.

I'm guessing Abridged/Kai has diminished the likelihood of this, but has anyone gone back to those original episodes? Binge watched any and had a different perspective? Enquiring minds would like to know.

The Freeza saga was replaying on my cable. I watched a few episodes, but my brothers and I felt that the action was slow. They haven't watched the abridged series and this was a Kai episode. Maybe because animes these days are more fast-paced or we never realized it was like this before.

- Dragon Ball Z’s Console Lineage

Dragon Ball Z first appeared on Japanese television in 1989. It took nearly seven years to make its way to North America. The show first showed up on American television in 1996, but a lack of interest forced the show’s cancellation prematurely. It wasn’t until Cartoon Network began to broadcast the series in 1998 that it found an audience and became the important part of North American anime culture that it is today.

Nice bit of reading.

Dawwww. Was anybody following this?

Actually a kind of cool feature, but the way they built the reveal up kinda set up false expectations. Could forgive people for being disappointed. Put aside, it could be a fun new gimmick. One that's probably a lot safer than trying to impose on the official canon. (Not that that imposition couldn't work).

WHOA SINCE WHEN IS THERE A DBZ THREAD?
Man, this show was my fave. Still is really, I love looking back on Youtube to see all the old fights.

I'm also well-established on DBZ's lore...

Dragon Ball/Z is by far one of my favorite works of fiction ever, it is tied with Mortal Kombat as my absolute favorite. Probably because it was THE show of my childhood, just like how MK was THE game of my childhood, so they are both really special to me. I have a few others that are very nostalgic to me as well (Halloween, Friday The 13th, Yu Yu Hakusho) but DB and MK take the cake for me

As most of you know a new DBZ movie is supposed to hit Japan's theatres in April 2015, and the big bad has pretty much been confirmed.

Frieza is returning, being wished back by the remnants of his army.

Freiza must get a ludicrous power boost, that is the only way he can be a threat to the Z fighters at this point in the story, which takes place after Battle Of Gods, since we see Beerus on the movie art.

As nerdy as it sounds, I usually rewatch the entire series over every year or two lol so I have many times and IMO the pacing isn't all that bad IF you ignore the filler episodes, like Gohan meeting the orphans, Gohan, Krillin and Bulma running into the space ship of people whose home was destroyed by Frieza's men, fake namek, the episode where Frieza had a flashback (For about the entire episode) about the fight we had just watched etc.. those can mess with things, especially if you don't care for those particular instances.

The fights are all well done IMO. Ill admit sometimes they can talk a little much, but I think it fits and ultimately works well.

When I was younger the pacing was never something I thought about, for whatever reason I didn't mind if the characters weren't fighting all the time, like I didn't huff n puff when Chi Chi wanted to Goku and Piccolo to get their licenses, or the few days before the Cell games when Goku and Gohan were just kickin it as Super Saiyans lol

As I got older I noticed things I didn't notice when I was younger, like recycled scenes, Master Roshi being awesome, overly dramatic reaction faces and some other little things but nothing that serious so my perspective on the show may have changed a little bit, but not in a negative way. I still love the entire series and really think its a good show.

In conclusion some of the filler episodes can seem unnecessary but that's really the only thing that messes with the pacing IMO.

The Frieza period just looms so large over the whole series. I'm not sure there's any value to going back to it. It's a benchmark - but they also had their say when all was said and done. It's something a lot of people measure everything else against, but you can't go home again. We've already even had little return visits (Trunks, GT) and continuations (Koola). That was fun, but enough already.

We're already reliving the past just by having the movies. Would love to see something that really hits moving forward.

Fair call. I think the filler eps are hit and miss. Some are fun, light deviations that really deserve to be look at in total isolation (driver's license), some compliment the serial format (Frieza's flashback), and some do a good job of just adding a bit more weight to things (space quest to Namek).

Yeah I was hoping for a new villain when I heard another movie was coming out, but I can live with it lol im curious to see how Frieza is going to get strong enough to hang with Goku at this point. Anyway I agree, going back to Frieza really isn't necessary but I did read (I cant remember where) that Akira said this was something he originally wanted to have in the manga back in the day, but never got around to it for whatever reason, so it might be interesting.

And I agree with that, fillers episodes are hit and miss, like I never liked the part where Gohan meets the orphans, I always disliked that one for some reason, and Frieza's flashback isn't bad but whenever I binge watch its a little annoying since I just watched everything being shown lol I love the drivers license episode though, and the otherworld tournament was pretty epic too.
