I might get some hate for this, but I really don't think the first Mortal Kombat movie was THAT great. Okay, it was the best videogame movie, but that doesn't necessarily mean it was a great movie on its own. I just thought it was kind of boring, and a bit kiddy. It also forgets about some important things in the game, especially the Scorpion vs Sub-zero rivalry, which is barely mentioned. The evil characters seem to just be punching bags that die after one fight.

Don't get me wrong, it had some really good parts. I especially love the performances of the actors who played Liu Kang, Johnny Cage and Kano, and it had some really good fight scenes. I liked the movie (especially when I was younger) , but does it really deserve all the praise it gets?

Well, excellent I wouldn't say, but it was a great joy to re-watch for dozens of times. I, personally, liked it perfectly fine without the gore. And, damn, was I fascinated by Cary Tagawa's portrayal of Shang Tsung, might be the best on-screen sorcerer I've ever seen!

Watch the movie. Is it fun? Then it's good and it deserves praise.

A lot of people thought it was fun. A lot of people praised it. It entertained people.

It was also released over 10 years ago so I don't see the point of going back and talking about if it ''deserved'' the praise. It was sucessful, it spawned a sequel and a TV show, and helped make MK a 90s pop culture icon. Those are facts.

The movie was mildly entertaining fluff. Nothing more.

Though the damage it and its spin-offs inflicted on the game's canon is highly distressing and depressing.

Did we need Liu Kang and Kitana to be in a relationship?
No, and it came from the movie.

Speaking of Kitana, I blame the movies & TV shows...and their bland portrayals of her character....as one of the reasons she's been derailed and chickified into oblivion.

It was after the movies & shows that Scorpion started to become portrayed more and more as a revenge-crazed drone. Before, he actually had some semblance of complexity.

Why do people keep believing Johnny Cage and Goro have any kind of rivalry?
And the fact that the games keep throwing in stupid little nods to it isn't helping at all.

Similarly, that Raiden & Shao Kahn are brothers and Shinnok is their father...which, if MK vs. DC is to be considered, they're actually stupid enough to consider.

The overemphasis on the Superfriends as the core heroes with their "go-team-go" bullshit. I thought it was better when the Earth fighters were more ragtag and loosely connected.

I could name other things that just bug me, but those I find to be the big offenders.

The only thing of any worth to come from the movies was the idea of Raiden being a mentor figure...which I'll grant, was probably a better idea in the long run.

Rayden was already a mentor figure in MK3, as he wasn't even playable but was part of the story.

If you want to blame anyone for those complaints of yours, blame the game makers. They're the ones who chose to put them in the games. I don't see anything wrong with Kitana and Liu Kang getting it on, you're crazy with that talk about Scorpion, and ''go team go''? That was pure MK3 bullshit, it was even worse than it was in the movie. In the MK3 intro the ''heroes'' are all lined up doing their poses. Doesn't get any cheesier than that.

Finally, Rayden and Shao Kahn being brothers comes from MKA and this thread is about the first movie. Also, it's not canon in the games at all.

You realize the first MK movie came out after UMK3 came out, right?

I do.
But it doesn't change those ideas originated from a mediocre film.

No it didn't.
The first movie came out in August 1995. Mortal Kombat 3 was released in October 1995.

Well, glad to see this is actually getting some response now. And maybe I was sounding a bit too serious earlier.

Yeah, I do agree it was a pretty fun film for a while, but ten years later it seems like people are still treating it like the greatest thing ever. For example when you go on youtube to watch a scene from the movie you'll see a comment that says "The first movie kicked ass!!!!!!! The second movie was a peice of sh*t!!!!!!" Compared to the second movie it was great, but compared to a quality film it was just an average movie to me.

first off...going by your profile; it says you are 18...therefore you would have been 2 when the movie was out...being 10 years older than you I can definitely say that stuff is all relative. I remember being 13 and thinking that goro looked awesome and the fx were cool and now I'm like "how did they get away with this?" it's kind of like if you watch an episode of saved by the bell nowadays...like the episode where screech's mom is out of town and they accidentally break her elvis statue then throw a party and charge people 10 dollars to go to the party. and this episode is b4 they all even can drive, they aren't old enough to work to have money, plus they don't have alcohol obviously. seriously...what planet would this ever happen on?! but the bottom line...it's not about whether something is good or bad it is whether or not you like it and how it makes you feel. like...I prefer Annihilation over the first film just cuz i love how it continues directly from the first and has bright pretty colors and has great music. but looking at it as an overall film I don't see how anyone could not understand it without knowing a backstory of at least MK3. and again...not sure if it's better movie than the first but I enjoy watching it more often than the first.

and on a side note....the director of Annihilation, John R. Leoneti, was the director of photography or something like that on "The Cell", which is seriously a great film everyone needs to watch...Jennifer Lopez's best movie. the actress that played Sindel has a small part in it too...plus the pink ranger(the second one) is tortured and naked in it and should have got more parts for that role(and not cuz she was naked, it was just an intense role). neway...that movie is so awesome. very underated and mismarketed...imo.

For the genre, Mortal Kombat is one of the better movies made. By genre I mean fantasy and/or video game based movies. Unless I'm mistake the only video game movies that were out around or before that time (not counting animated flicks) was Mario Bros (yech), Double Dragon (Would have been a double yech, except that it is so stupid its funny) and Street Fighter (this one was so bad, I still want the two hours of my life back) The Mortal Kombat movie was the first real proof that a movie based off of a video game could be something actually worth watching, even for people who never played the game. As a fantasy based action movie, I thought it was pretty good except it lacked that epic feel that the better fantasy movies had, but it had a better (if simpler) story than most.

Even if you don't like the original Mortal Kombat movie, I kinda believe we have that movie's success to thank for some of the newer, good video game movies we have now (ie the Lara Croft movies, Resident Evil movies and Wing Commander).

It was one of the first pieces of MK media I fell upon (the other being MK4) and while it's not perfect, I enjoyed it. Kitana was bland (as it's been said) and looking back I didn't like how they made Scorpion's spear alive, but the fight scenes were well done and most of the acting was pretty good imo.

Yep. I liked the extra layer it gave to them.

She was in one game prior to the movie. And while MK2 gave her a good backstory, she certainly wasn't a fleshed-out character.

It was after the movies & shows that Scorpion started to become portrayed more and more as a revenge-crazed drone. Before, he actually had some semblance of complexity.

Both Midway and Malibu presented Scorp as pretty single-minded. I'm not sure where you're coming from, here.

Why do people keep believing Johnny Cage and Goro have any kind of rivalry?

Because it was a cool scene.

Similarly, that Raiden & Shao Kahn are brothers and Shinnok is their father...which, if MK vs. DC is to be considered, they're actually stupid enough to consider.

Let's hope they do.

I thought it was more fun to see their personalities play off one another.

What can I say, I like the terrible storyline of the films more than the terrible storyline of the games. Anyway, sorry to take time out of your busy schedule of bemoaning the current state of magic ninja princesses.

Picked up the DVD months ago, watch both movies, and liked this one overall. This one just had a bit more "pizazz" in it than that of Annihilation. Story was easy to follow, characters were portrayed perfectly.

End of story.
