I hate to be the first to tell you this but MK was not the best selling fighting game.
So the Dragon logo could've been selling itself (to the fans), but not good enough.
Now that WB is involved you know they can't just go and say "as long as the fans buy the game it's good enough". This is the reason why Kratos is in and this is the reason they put a very cool illustration (coz you know it looks cool) on the cover.
The logo would be cool for old times sake, but now everything about your game including the cover needs to make everyone want play your game. Otherwise a lot of people would just look at the cover. Make a comment about it like "Mortal Kombat was cool in the 90's" and move on to the next game or don't even give it any attention at all. These people need to want to play this game as well. A cool cover can be a trigger to make people wanna find out more about the game by trying it out in the store, going home and looking it up on review sites or youtube, or just picking it up right then and there.
At least you should be happy they didn't put Kratos on the cover to sell this game a some more.

Besides, when you put the game in your PS3/Xbox360 you're not gonna worry about the boxart. You're gonna be playing a kickass game and forget this thread.

Ummm.... what the fuck are you on about? The only two fighting franchises that outsell Mortal Kombat are Street Fighter and Tekken. Mortal Kombat is EASILY one of the top selling fighting games... and as of this generation, did not fall short from Street Fighter and Tekken in sales...

Get your shit straight man...

But those are the old days. The last few MK games weren't the best selling games out there.
It didn't take long for MK:A and MK vs. DC to be sold for about 20 euros in most stores over here.

A lot of people lost faith in MK since MK4/MK:DA. And I'm talking general public, not fans of the MK games.

Most people that do play fighting games are playing Street Fighter, Tekken, Soul Calibur and even Dragonball games.
This doesn't mean MK doesn't sell well. But other franchises are getting more popular. It's not bad, but those people also need to be tempted to at least try out MK. That's why games these days need cool covers. You need to stand out. Not so much by being simple or different, but you need to have a cover that looks cool.
This is not just MK. It's almost every game out there. Cool cover = more sales.

I must agree, TotalReject.

When I was a kid, the only fighting games I played were Mortal Kombat and Killer Instinct. Now I find myself playing Soul Calibur, Super Smash Bros., Def Jam, and even Tekken, which I once hated.

Times have in fact changed. Mortal Kombat was strong back in the day because it had no other competition than Street Fighter. But then came along Tekken in 1994, Soul Edge in 1996, and the almighty Super Smash Bros. in 1999. By then, Mortal Kombat had already begun to slip.

There is a war between fighting games, and Mortal Kombat is one of the elder of the warriors. It needs to come strong or it'll get knocked into the dust. And one of the chief weapons in this war, is the game's case cover.

Nevertheless, I must say Mortal Kombat is a legendary franchise and a household name. Even those who've never played a video game know what Mortal Kombat is.

Still, cover art is highly important towards the sell and replay of a video game. A terrible cover can easily repel someone from purchasing the game, even if the buyer is a fan. It can also keep the buyer from playing it regularly; image on the cover would be an instant turn off, leading the gamer to play another game, eventually selling the rejected game due to lack of interest.

This can happen with a CD cover, DVD cover, billboard, or a movie poster. If it doesn't look enticing, people won't buy it.

That's true, Riyakou. I try not to criticize a product by its cover but it's always nicer to have a good cover. That's one of the reasons I'm going to buy the game in SteelBook.

I like the pictures and the idea here but the layout looks like a mediocre copy/paste job. First of all the Kratos sign shifted the 'Mortal Kombat' text down so it just looks weird that both aren't the same. And it should be more centered, with the dragon logo in the middle, or at the very least, Sub-Zero's head should line up with the dragon logo so the text's surroundings look more even.

Yawn sleep I'm tired of seeing Scorpion and Sub-Zero... I'm not a huge fan of Scorpion and Sub-Zero. The Box Art should have just been the MK Dragon logo.

This date is gonna be a real pain in the ass. I will be picking up the game about a week before my Law School exams start. Meaning I will be in possession of the game for nearly 3 weeks before I will be able to play it.

I will be studying non-stop until that final exam is over. Then I will drive to the store, buy a bottle of whiskey and a 12 pack of good beer, go home and start my summer with an all night MK romp.

I have a feeling my online record will take a hit that night that I will never be able to recover from, but my god will it be worth it.

What the fuck, read through 2 pages and 90% of the people posting are complaining about the artwork. . . really people? God damn babies, complain about anything and everything. Reason why I only visit this site to read news now a days. The game's case could be clear, with no insert, who gives a fuck? Pussies.
