/yeah sure, the MK logo sticks out. However, MK fan aside, which looks more fun to play? Are u gonna be interested in a game with just that logo, or two ninjas about to fight? When compared to the other games next to it, they all garner interest in what's on the cover. Yo see cool shit that catches your eye because you like the look of it. A simple logo may stick out more, but it's not something that will make you want to play the game.

Show a kid, show a friend, or anyone really...a copy of MvC3, DC Universe, and just the MK logo box. You really think they'll pick that based on that it's art on the cover is simple thus sticks out? Then try the one with Sub and Scorp, I bet then it would at least get picked a certain number of times.

Having the dragon logo by itself isn't any better. Try picking that cover out on a game shelf. Nothing about it catches your eye.

Cept the big dragon symbol.

Yeah, the dragon symbol squashed between two other games that could much more eye catching covers.

VERY few other game have a logo as iconic and recognizable as the MK dragon logo...Its legendary.

Sure, but is that going to stand out on a shelf with other games by itself? Nobody here is going to pass the game by on a shelf at Gamestop or Best Buy, or Amazon. But the marketing for this game really isn't trying to target us, is it?

See what I mean. Good point. The logo solo stands out more and is less cheesy.

I wouldn't be such a stick in the mud about this if we hadn't already been bombarded with Sub-zero and Scorpion info, renders, gameplay, Story trailers, fatality trailers, and knowning we get Sub-zero and Scorpion figures with the Kollector's edition.

The view of the characters is so slanted towards those two that when we get more new Sub-zero and Scorpion info, I find myself not caring. I would rather see a blurry magazine scan of Sindel or Jade, then see some more drawn out Scorpion/Sub-zero content.

This is exactly what im talking about. But apparently I am too incoherent to read....tisk tisk

This guy is willing to pay more for a game that has a different box. Describing himself as throwing up on the computer screen because of the cover art. This may just be me being INCOHERENT again...but this looks like outrage to me.

If this conversation was about a particular character getting excluded from the game, or someone not having a certain move. I might jump on board and be upset myself. But we are talking about a plastic box here, a box that holds the game that will most likely stay in your system for quite awhile. Are you planning on turning it into a poster? Is it going to be your next christmas card? What exactly is the big deal here?

Yes, Mr. Ant, I actually, factually, literally blew chunks all over my laptop. I don't mind typing through all the goo. Eh, you just haven't been here long enough to get the way I write some of my posts... there's obviously a bit of inflated sardonicism. My point still stands though, and while it isn't as vital a point that I'll grow physically ill over it, it's still a bigger deal than you think. This isn't about a picture on a CD case... the subject of these rants encompasses months and months and months.

JAX007 is absolutely right.

The black dragon logo stands out because of it's boldness.

With characters on the cover, the art just looks like everything else.

Obviously i know you didnt literally throw up on your screen. And its quite possibly i have frequented this site just as long, if not longer than you judging by your visit count. I just never had enough reason to sign up until the new game was announced.

Im just saying we all need to take a few steps back and look at what we are complaining about. Mileenas teeth, Sonyas shoes, a plastic box. Although some of these things hold some aesthetic value. We are being given an awesome game to play. We are all here on these boards because of that game. But some people love to just sit around here all day long and shit on every piece of positive information we get. Its leading me to believe these forums have some bi-polar users.

OK, I've given NRS quite a bit of flak for some of the decisions they've made about this game, but as far as the box art is concerned, they knocked it out of the park. It's really very well done. I'm sure I'm going to see some hate on the grounds that it's Scorpion and Sub-Zero yet again, but said haters need to deal with it. Scorpion and Sub-Zero are the big tickets here, so it's only logical that they be featured on the box art.

I don't care if they put Tony Danza on the cover, as long as the game inside is as good as all the footage I've seen has lead me to believe it will be.

I agree.
The cover is made to sell the game. There wouldn't be much of a point to make covers for games otherwise.
Every cover could just be a black cover with the title in times new roman on it. How's that for simplicity.

Besides, the illustration of Scorpion and Sub-Zero on the cover looks pretty cool to me.

I did. I was expressing my annoyance with the overstated focus of NRS in going after casual gamers, which just consequently leaves the rest of us wondering about other characters and other aspects of the game that don't involve the "two MK ninjas". I just said this with more details and, admittedly, a little more grumbling.

Fair enough. What I was aiming to say wasn't exactly that you're a newbie, but rather that you didn't get the exaggerations in my previous post and seemed to be taking it a bit too seriously while letting the core point fly overhead.

I see the basis in what you're saying, but in a discussion board, especially one as popular as this, you're going to get plenty of people who aren't as laid back or consistently optimistic as you. I myself have complimented and praised plenty about the game since its announcement, and I am well aware of the great game we're getting. But things come up here and there during the promotional phase (and trust me, post-release as well) that fall way below our expectations as fans. What those expectations are simply vary from person to person - From Sonya's heels (which I personally like), to the nauseating ninjas.

I'm going with this here. I don't care what anyone says: after MK2, the dragon logo cover was boring as fuck. The cover needed some color on it.

If I had it my way, EVERY character would be on the front cover.

While I must admit the dragon logo would have looked better tenfold, I do, however, understand where WB/NRS are going with the box-art. Essentially they're appealing to both the casual and hardcore. The hardcore will know MK when they see MK, so they'll buy it regardless.

If a casual gamer saw a video-game with a dragon on it, they wouldn't really know what to expect. Now, if a casual gamer saw a video-game with ninjas killing eachother, kratos making a guest appearance, and a dragon logo, they'll have a better idea of what they're purchasing. Seems like standard marketing to me.

A vote between the two covers on this site would probably lean towards the logo only due to the nostalgia it gives off.

Hope the official cover image isn't on the CD. Wouldn't mind it being on the booklet.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>EDUCATIONAL POST<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

There's actually a demographic involved with the different regions and their varying box art. Like many have said in this thread, these boxes are made to SELL. Apparently, there seems to be a conception that each different region has different tastes when it comes to box art or what they look for when buying games.

In Japan, it is more of a formal art, sketches and paintings. Custom art that symbolizes the game in a more subtle way. This is my personal favorite theory.

In Europe, atmosphere and terrain are considered to be the eye-grabbers. So you'll see many boxes with a locations and less characters.

In America, we apparently forgo art and subtlety. We usually just get clusterfucks of characters. Usually not even drawn, but simple models from the game. Honestly, this seems to be the most retail of the bunch to me. We few a few nice box arts here and there, but generally all our games follow the same format. Stick either the main character on the front with little else, or have a collage of characters covering the entire thing.

I collect video games, I have a pretty generous collection. But some games are just eyesores to display. I'd really like to have some subtle, simple art on my cover, instead of the same 3D models I'm going to see in the game.

Ok we KNOW that the cover is there for the game to SELL..
BUT
how they achieved to sell MK1, MK2, MK3, MKT with amazing variations of the dragon logo back then?
It was amazing, every cover had a different mysterious dark feeling to it. Simple and true. MK2 is my favourite. I wish it was just the fire dragon logo this time.

Thank god, the PAL collector's edition will come in a black TIN box, with only the dragon logo on it ;)
Guys.... its a box art cover... Thats it. Is that really something to get so upset about?
