Too busy bickering lol...
I for one love the idea, as I'm very open to lots of things changing. Quite honestly, I could barely keep up with everyones story in MK. Things have gotten clearer since the old days, but there's still things I'm not sure about.
Like exactly WHO did Kahn kill to take over Outworld? Onaga or Kitana's father? Blah...it matters little. I'm sure my concious will be cleared (hopefully) in this installment.
Nevertheless, I believe you just may be on to something good.

Onaga was the original Emperor of Outworld. Shao Kahn poisoned him and took over.
Jerrod,Kitana's father, was the ruler of Edenia, one of the realms Shao Kahn waged war on and ultimately annexed to Outworld after he took over.

Appreciate it.
Hah, poisoned?
What a shitty way to be taken out. I'm a tad dissapointed in Kahn....

It is true that Smoke and Sub-Zero probably didn't have this Snake-Otacon bond going... but would they need to? But let's say they are friend's on the most basic level, which I presume would mean they have a mutual respect for each other and hold up their relationship as something valuable. That would be enough for Sub-Zero to be absolutely mortified at what happened. If they don't at least have that type of relationship, I would argue they're not friends.

I'm inclined think they would, in order to really get the sense of tragedy that most folks see their story as delivering. I don't doubt that Sub was horrified at what happened, not at all, - I'd be horrified if someone I didn't even know went through something like that. Abomination of nature, and whatnot. I'd feel sorry for the person, but...well, this'll sound cold, but there are people I work with I consider friends, but if they died, I doubt their loss would affect me profoundly for more than a few weeks at most. That's kind of the way I'm tending to see Sub-Zero and Smoke's relationship....not that I want to.
I mean, I really don't like looking at it that way, but I'm inclined to think so due to the switch in duties when Tobias left and Vogel took over the plot. It may have just been an oversight, but I don't think that Vogel thought their relationship important enough to follow up on...or perhaps he just thought that Noob as his brother was simply a more interesting angle. With all the info that MKDA's Konquest mode offered up - including information about Sheeva, Motaro and Ermac - it pisses me off that he never even addressed what happened with them during the end of MK3, whether Sub gave him up for dead, or looked for him to no avail...and that their relationship was pretty much ignored for MKD.

For the record though, the sacrifice theory does explain a lot of the data. It explains why Sub-Zero escaped and Smoke didn't. Perhaps Sub-Zero was just the faster runner, but isn't Smoke a stealth-master?

I've had this almost funny mental image in my mind for years, this scenario where they're being chased through a forest, and one of Sektor's incoming homing missiles hits a tree and nearly knocks Sub unconscious. They're near a fast-moving river going down the side of a mountain, so Smoke suggests going downstream. Sub groggily makes a small ice boat. Smoke knocks him out, loads him onto it, and kicks it off just as Ketchup and Mustard arrive over a ridge. Smoke uses rapid-fire teleport/smoke attacks to keep them occupied for a little while, but eventually Cyrax whips out a net that gets him.

Another thing is that the sacrifice theory explains Smoke's alignment. If you think about it, wouldn't evading the Lin Kuei simply earn him a neutral status? I mean, Bi-Han wasn't exceptionally evil, but when he went to the Netherrealm, he turned into a wraith. When Smoke went into the Netherrealm, he started spazzing out like a chicken without a head. I think it's safe to interpret that as Smoke had real moral attributes. Sub-Zero too displayed moral tendencies, so if he was friends with Smoke, it's not unreasonable to believe Smoke shared some of those sentiments. Maybe that's why they're friends.

Oh, trust me. I didn't even need MKD having him go cuckoo upon entering the Netherrealm to remind me that there's a good person under all that. His MK3 ending specified he would have been one of Raiden's chosen had he still a soul. That's all I need.

Although I don't know if I'd take the automation route later on if it were removed from the MK3 storyline. I don't think it would have the same effect since Smoke was raised into the Lin Kuei clan. Being automated by Sektor wouldn't be tragic on the same level. Instead, I'd capitalize on the experiences Smoke underwent in MK3 and see how far that develops him. I know that sounds kind of contradictory to what I said earlier, but if Smoke has to be human, I say go all the way with it.

Fair enough. I'd personally hope to avoid the automation altogether for this route - I'd just prefer it happened later rather than sooner, if it did at all.

It really just depends on the route they take. But remember, the thesis I was defending in my initial post was not that Smoke should be automated in MK2011, but that Human Smoke within the confinement of the MK3 storyline cannot logically have a better story than Cyber Smoke. He doesn't have the dramatic premises to do it.

You're probably right. There's the factor of his MK2 status to consider, however. 2011 will probably show us why he was there in the first place - maybe even why he was hanging around Goro's Lair, if they want to get into it enough (Maybe he was chasing Edenian booty :P). That retroactively gives us more time to build him up, so that there's potential for the events surrounding the conversion process to have a profound effect on him even sans automation. Of course I don't delude myself - the kind of effect necessary to equal having one's own humanity stolen away can only be equalled by death. But for me, the payoff comes with seeing how he will react to the automation as a person. I imagine him as someone who's felt very loyal to the clan, and who considers the process dishonorable, an aberration, and a betrayal of the Lin Kuei's traditions. He;d be devastated in all likelihood if that were the case. Even if it means sacrificing the automation, it will be worth it to me to witness how he reacts to something like that - heck, almost anything at all - as a person. I can take that knowledge and apply it to the original canon - then perhaps, if his character is treated right, I can get back that sense of tragedy I've felt in recent years is lessened in scale from what I imagined it to be.
I think we actually had this same discussion, or something very like it, ages ago. I do consent that, were we to go back in time and change his MK3 storyline, we wouldn't get anything approaching the magnitude of his original plot, at least not in terms of the perceived impact it had on Sub-Zero.
BTW Temp, I didn't get the chance to chime in when you posted the thread, but I read about your discharge and you have my commiserations.

I'll reply to it over in the Human Smoke thread, in an effort to steer the discussion to where it really should be. Then I can post mine, and you can all point and laugh.

Am I the only person who's sick of this thread?
My opinion... as a neutral party who has as yet not weighed in on the Smoke thing...
This thread started as an awesome, "Ed Boon is letting us give input into DLC choices" thread, and it seems to have devolved into "Everyone argue endlessly with everyone else about Smoke"
I mean like... I'd love to discuss these DLC choices, but this thread has de-railed. Badly.
And just reading the last few pages, I really don't want to seem like yet another person arguing about Smoke, I REALLYdon't... but I feel like alot of you are just running with your emotions now and beyond the point of constructive discussion here... To put a modern media spin on it: You've gone Kanye West.
By that I mean...
Whether Beyonce's video was or wasn't better than Taylor Swift's video was irrelevant. Whether you were a fan of Beyonce, Swift OR Kanye West was irrelevent. The fact was Kanye was dismissive of other people's opinions, because he thought they were "wrong" and felt the need to force his opinions on everyone else in an insulting and intrusive manner. Whether he was right or wrong about Beyonce's video didn't matter. The crowd turned on him.
By the same token...
Regardless of you or anyone elses opinions of Smoke. Human Smoke, Robot Smoke, Great Character, Lame Character, Epic Story, Stupid Story, Good Gameplay or Bad Gameplay. Makes no difference.
The crowd has turned on ya'll.
I'm really not trying to pick a fight with anyone, and I'm trying to be as polite as possible and remain neutral... but... it may be time for some of you to cut and run on the Smoke discussion. Smile, bow, and get off the stage. :P
Or at least start up a new thread called "Everyone fight about Smoke here" so we can talk about these DLC choices again...
Please. :P
EDIT: PS. I was around page 9 or 10 when I wrote this, and it seems the discussion has already calmed down a bit since then on pages 11 & 12... so I guess I'm behind the curve. Apologies for that much. But I still think it would be a good idea for things to ya'know... stay calm.

T-Rex, pretty good thought/idea about Smoke; and that could keep the DA from becoming which is a start at preventing the DK and Blaze. Think you're on to something.
I know that this is far-fetched and I'd doubt it would happen, but his MKT ending did say he retreated or something in the Living Forest, which could be found by Jade and they could compare notes. Or even incorporate a new character for DLC that involves his story. With this meaning a character that would represent and be part of the control (brain) of the Living Forest, made from and out of the Living Forest, but operate kinda like an afid helps out plants; hell make a plant-looking female that can even seduce Smoke for all we know, assist him with killing whomever, or he could even black-mail the forest by means of smoking it out/killing it with communicating with that female or whomever and make it set a trap for his enemies, that way his powers can become a key element for this game's story; he does need something to help out his character/story and I know there's limits with his abilities except blow smoke around people.

Your idea t of Human Smoke living in a symbiosis with the Living Forest was pretty creative and intriguing. Jade would have made a great plant character but I bet it's too late for her now. Back on the official topic, X360A posted the news of potential DLC choices too. They contemplated that there is a chance of NRS actually making those very characters already and wanting to see just the popularity of each character so they'll know what each DLC pack should consist. I think all the Human Smoke related discussion should indeed be directed into Human Smoke Reflections, if someone feels the debate isn't cleared by a mile yet, just to keep things untroubled.
