Her moves, I will confess, were far too bland for her potential. She's a DEMON. The throwing knives and 5-star kicks were all fine and dandy, but I was hoping she'd use her demonic powers a bit. A perfect example might be the character Ragna, from Blazblue, who fights rather normally but possesses demonically enhanced attacks that show he's far more than human.
Iwould love to see Sareena fight in a similar fashion. One moment, she's rather ordinary and human looking, then the next she unleashes some Netherrealm demon fury and her appearance twists and alters the more powerful her attacks become.

Given that Sareena is trying to get rid of her demon nature, I think having her use her demonic form and powers in battle would be a complete u-turn on her part. The way she is now allows her to dstance herself from that side of her that she hates so much and is fitting to her character and story, imo. She shouldn't succumb to her demonic nature purely for the state of having a few attacks from that form and as such, I think it should remain hidden. It's like how we know Shang can morph, but he doesn't need to do so in battle to be useable as MKDA proved and for Sareena, MKA had her as the ebst character overall. So she was for formidable in her own right without her demonic powers. That being said, it makes you wonder if the agility and speed she has a due to her demonic nature. If her demonic side stays hidden, it gives her that sense of mystique and allows her to keep it.
If she ever were to succumb to her demonic side, I believe it would be via force or in a situation where she had no alternative in order to survive. Though it begs the question of would she choose to succumb to her true nature in order to survive? As an alternative, the deminic form could be used in a Fatality where she succumbs to the fury of her true self.

I agree with this for the most part. Unless they were to develope Sareena in the story to a point where she learns to control her demonic side.
But then, that might probably take away some of the fun of her character.

I always had an idea where, if she had a Fatality like this, when it was over, she would return to her human form and...rather than do some fancy victory pose...she reacts with horror about what she just did.

I think that would be a nice touch.

If they were to have her try to control her demnic nature then yes, I'd be all for her having attacks from that form. Perhaps she could have a morph sort of move or even have her demonic side playable as an alternate form.

Concerning Sareena, I've enjoyed the idea that she is a bit like Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde or the Hulk, in that she bottles up all her demonic wrath and powers and only lets bits and pieces of it out in battle. Or, for another comparison, she's like Wolverine, a man whose mind was once described in battle as "a computer playing several chess matches at once", and yet when he gives in to his feral nature he's a wild and dangerous, borderline animalistic predator.

For Sareena, I enjoy the dichotomy that she shuns and rejects her demonic nature and wants to be human and beautiful, but her demonic nature is what gives her her powers and her strength. When she lost control over her human appearance and reverted to her demonic self, she felt a significant loss of control and become a menace to friend and foe alike, as well as significantly stronger and unhindered.

I could see that used in gameplay for a variety of reasons. The more powerful a demonic ability she uses, the less "human" she becomes. Think of it like the battle damage that characters sustain, only for her she goes from beautiful and human looking to the end of the fight, demonic and otherworldly, but only depending on how much she relinquishes control over her human form and forgoes things like combat skills and throwing knives in favor of energy blasts, power and speed boosts, or whatever other imaginative demonic abilities she'd have access to.

If nothing else, I agree that a fatality where she just loses it, gives in to the bloodlust and casts aside her human visage for her true demonic appearance, and proceeds to eviscerate and shred her victim to pieces, only to moments later regain her composure and see just what she'd done with her own two hands in shock and maybe terror would be a fantastic, and highly memorable, finisher for a character that has far too much untapped potential.

I also like the idea of Sareena as trying to hold in her demon side, but sometimes she loses control, and fatalities where she turns into her demon form, rips the opponent apart, then is all horrified when she turns back would be great.

I personally believe that the original females of mortal kombat 1-3 are the most interesting. They hold a really classic quality that no one can beat for me. Only been a fan of a few characters in the post mortal kombat 3 games like quan chi, nitara and havik. None of the others have really been able to keep my interest.

I wouldnt mind if they threw in some post mortal kombat 3 girls in this game but i would greatly prefer to see all the originals from mk 3 in it...especially Sheeva. I couldnt imagine sonya being left out, she's another one of my favorites. As for Jade and Sindel, i feel very confident they will be aswell. The only really questionable one for me is Sheeva but i really hope they put her in over any new MK female as i think the mortal kombat team could do an incredible job with her

I really like the ideas you guys gave for Sareena! That demon side thing emerging would be sick. They just need to fix her broken ass. Those knives were a pain in the ass...but...JADE ALL DAY BABY! I hope her alternate costume is the same as MKD and MKA without the pigtails. The bun or maybe her hairstyle for her main would work? Hmm...

I think Sheeva would be awesome in this game though! How would the X-Ray work on her though? I'm assuming she doesn't have a normal human skull and would require some extra work like details on Reptile's skull. That would be an extra 2 months of work right there.

I actually like those pigtails. XD
But then again, I'm also fan of Cammy from Street Fighters. I do think it would be cool to see Jade have pigtails though, as it would be different for a female MK character to have such.

I liked the pigtails. They were a good embellishment/update on the bun she had in UMK3, to make her look more different from Kitana and Mileena.

Moving on, I did a piece in an earlier thread that sort of rekindles my love affair with criminally underutilized sexy demon, Sareena. Here's the copy and paste:

Sareena is one of my favorite characters, by far, because of her duality and dichotomy between savage monster and noble beauty. She didn't just "become good"; she has to fight to keep her demonic nature and inner evil in check. She is literally locked in battle with herself at all times to keep from reverting into a crazed, evil demon that kills indiscriminately. Yet she keeps her control because of the kindness and affection Sub-Zero showed her. She doesn't always win that battle with herself, and has reverted to her demonic nature a few times, but she genuinely WANTS to be good, to do as Sub-Zero did and defy her fate, to not be bound by her limitations and to challenge fate. She is beauty and beast in one package, a powder keg ready to explode, and the fact that she is both a powerful ally and yet a dangerous liability makes every moment she's in the game exciting.

I still lament the fact that she is one of the most fleshed out, exciting, and original characters MK has, as well as one of the few shining gems that MK: Armageddon gave us; she was easily one of the better characters in the entire game and one of the most fun to play as. She never really died, but I always wanted to know what she was up to in the years leading up to her encounter with the younger Sub-Zero, and how she would have handled the death of the original Sub-Zero, whom had inspired her insurrection in the first place. She serves as an excellent bridge between both Sub-Zeros, has strong ties to Quan Chi and the early, even pre-MK1 era, and remains, in my opinion, the best MK character, both story and gameplay-wise, to never get the wide-spread exposure she deserved.

Yeah I feel you! I was just never a fan of pigtails on characters just because I always thought they made a character look silly. Pigtails to me conjure up images of schoolgirls with big anime type eyes. That's just my personal bias. If she had them I wouldn't be upset, but I'd prefer an upgrade. grin NVM! After reviewing her in action with pigtails I like how they look. I take that one back haha.

Right well, I get the whole keeping the demon in check aspect of her character but, we spun off on this by pointing out that Sareena deserves some compelling gameplay to go along with her compelling backstory. She has her knives and whatnot but generally, she comes across as pretty bland.

Bland? Eh, I can't speak for anybody else, but for me, she was one of the most fun characters to use in Armageddon. I won't deny that her two "slide across the screen and punch you" moves are too generic to keep, though.

The Five Star Kick would easily be her best move creatively, were it improved just a bit to stand out more visually. I would add a special effect to it like a fiery streak on the end of her foot that makes it look like she's drawing a pentagram in the air as she kicks you.

As for the knives...I'd keep the super-fast throwing or perhaps change it to a flurry of them all at once like Reiko's shurikens? But I'd change them to the sickles from Mythologies, I've always liked those better. Kano's already basically trademarked the throwing of knives anyway and I don't think she'd be served too well by giving her a generic energy or fire-based projectile, which is the usual alternative.

Other than that...perhaps some close-range moves where she slashes at you with her fingernails? Clawing and shredding sounds like how a demon would fight to me. Perhaps her hand could even transform into a more monstrous one and back.

I've never really paid much attention to Sareena due to not playing Mythologies and barely ever using her in MKA, but I'm totally loving these ideas in this thread for her! I'm fairly certain that the MK team could find a way to write her into MK2011 and if she was anything like these suggestions she could become a new fan-favourite.

As for the others, obviously Kitana, MIleena and Sonya are in; Sindel and Jade will probably make it; and Sheeva might. If the last three do make it in, sweet, if they don't I'm not goind to be too heartbroken.

For post-MK3 characters, I'd like to see Tanya come back because she's really the only one that can be tied in to the newish storyline. Plus, to all those people who don't like oversexualization of female characters, look no further than Tanya, her stuff is pretty tame.

Ashrah, Li Mei, Nitara, Frost and Kira I could do without. But once again, if they do make it in I'm not gonna be upset.

Edit: Oops! Forgot Khameleon... Kinda speaks for itself. Forgetable.

Think this is the most apt thread for this so here goes.

Here is a design idea I had for Skarlett. Ok she is not an official MK female, but I always thought it would be good to give her a design and make her real like they did with Ermac.

Anyway my idea for a character and storyline for Skarlett is that she is a watcher/spy type person for the Elder Gods.

For her look I obviously went with red predominately, with purple accents and gold hints thrown in there too. Also decided to go with red for the hair, as only Kira has red hair and the black/brown hair in MK is a bit overused, perhaps. I also wanted her to be fully covered clothes wise, an its only her upper arms that are bare here which I can live with.

Apologies for the bad quality of images, I made this on the PSP version of Soul Calibur so its not the best uality in the first place. You can get the general idea.

Skarlett Face

Skarlett Front

Skarlett Body

Skarlett Boots

Skarlett Back

And heres the bio I had for her (Couldnt find where I had posted this before)

Skarlett:
Origin: The Heavens
Status: Watcher
Alignment: Good
Allies: The Elder Gods, Fujin
Foes: Shinnok, Quan Chi, Shao Kahn, Shang Tsung, Onaga
Many centuries ago, the being known as Shao Kahn began his mission to become supreme ruler of all realms. During this time, Shao Kahn recruited many powerful warriors, from a variety of realms, to aid him in his mission. The Elder Gods watched carefully as the Earth Realm began to move within Shao Kahn's reach. Shortly after Shao Kahn's forces killed the Edenian Ruler and took over the realm, spies picked up word of a plan of Kahn's to unleash a great evil from the depths of the Netherrealm. Kahn's mission was to capture souls, and release them from the Netherrealm, a task which he was sucsessful in completeing. The souls could not survive on their own, but by means of an ancient relic, Shao Kahn bound the souls together into a single being. This being was known as Ermac. The Elder Gods feared this being, a reightfully so. Ermac proved to be powerful, and ruthless and aided Kahn in the slaughter of many innocent lives. but, unbeknown to both Kahn and Ermac, a spell was placed on the relic used by a spy hand chosen by The Elder Gods Themselves. For every Soul Shao Kahn took from the Netherrealm, one was taken from the Heavens, and embodied in the same manner of Ermac. This being took on the form of Skarlett. For many years, Skarlett lay in the shadows of Earthrealm, and later Outworld, watching the events of Shang Tsungs Tournament and the subsequent happenings closely. With the threat against Earth reaching new heights, now is the time for The Watcher of The Elder Gods to be revealed.
