Game Informer Interviews Ed Boon!

Today Game Informer has released a new interview with Mortal Kombat creator, Ed Boon. Little new information regarding the game is discussed within the interview, but Ed seemingly puts to rest the rumored inclusions of both Friendships and Animalities.

GI: Does the new Mortal Kombat have some of the silliness of the older games? Like Jax’s giant foot stomping down?

Boon: I think in every Mortal Kombat game we put a touch of silliness in it, because we’re not taking it seriously. When we say, ‘Kung Lao cuts your head off and then cuts you in half and then you split like this,’ we’re not like [mock serious tone] ‘Good job.’ It’s just so ridiculous that you would do that to somebody, that for us we need to remind everybody that we’re not being very serious. So we’ll have the ‘Toasty’ guy or have someone turn into a baby, but we’re not going to go crazy with that. We’re not going to do animalities or friendships or the over the top humorous stuff, but we are going to have funny elements.

I'm very concerned with the prospect of someone turning into a baby though. Babalities are just as bad as animalities.

It's still a pretty bad idea. I'm going to hope that is used sparingly, whatever it is. Friendships are less stupid than babalities.

Nothing >frienships>babalities >animalities .

Even though I haven't had a doubt that it won't be animalities , due to the fact that they will require too much work on designing the animals , it is just nice to know that Animalities are gone for good .

Babalities weren't that bad TBH .

The game is already so dark and brutal that I wouldn't mind seeing friendships and babablities again. Thats why I think if worked really well in MK2. Didn't work so well in MK3 because everything about that game was corny and silly.

But yeah, I have no problem seeing babalities and friendships again. It's gives the game an interesting contrast, which makes the game even more disturbing in a way.

I have the same concern and both are bad but i'd rather have animalities if I had to pick between the two.

Awsome little interview. Glad to know whats in and out "ality" wise. I hope Babalities arent back as a whole. Maybe just one character has the power to do a babality or something. I dunno. Cant wait to see the toasty guy!

Boon: To me, we weren’t able to tell—back in ’92, when the first game came out, it was only two or so paragraphs. We didn’t have a medium to tell a detailed story. So we’re really telling the first story, which was never really told in detail. Now we have cinematics and actors and motion capture and all that stuff. Now we can tell it with a lot more sophistication. That’s, to me, the big win of the story."

Changing history so Liu doesn't win the tournament and stuff like that makes it not "the first story" at all. That makes it a NEW story. That's just common sense.

It does inspire some confidence, though. Hearing that make me think Scorpion is still going to kill Sub-Zero, which was one of my big concerns.

Well maybe the history of the first MK doesn't change, but history starts changing after it? I think that's what pretty much Boon is telling us.

Personally, I love subverted humor. The games do need some silliness, but only if you know where to find it.

An example might be Silent Hill. Those games are dreary, dark, violent, disturbing, and creepy... and yet if you know what to do, you can get stuff like lazer guns, UFO endings, Sailor Moon outfits, etc. The humor is just something that's masked under the surface.

Another good one might be Gears of War. Little jokes like doing certain actions that give everybody cowboy hats (including the big scary monsters) while screaming "Yee-haw!", or the random toaster that spits out burnt toast in the Locus stronghold ("Who wants toast?!" "I like mine cripsy!").

I'm not so much a fan of 'in-your-face' humor, like Bo Rai'Cho farting and barfing up a storm.

M'hm. Which means Boon, like always, is lying about something. The context of the two quotes leads me to believe that Liu Kang not winning and the changed automation storyline are not true and were just something to incite fanboy rage and build hype. This seems like a casual statement he's making without putting much thought into it because it's just a fact. I'm probably wrong though.

The whole E3 interview seemed very vague and rhetorical, where as this seems a tad more straight-forward and to the point. I'm having a feeling not A LOT is going to change, only enough to make it more in depth than two paragraphs of info.

I looove Friendships.

They are silly, fun, hilarious and are obviously meant to NOT be taken seriously.

Hopefully they will be added as a "secret" in the end.
