Gamespot gave this game an 8.5. I thought for sure it was going to get something in the high 9's.

I was cheap and ordered MvC3 off amazon with the free shipping, so I am still waiting to play it. I am more excited to play MK because of the possibility it might finally be good again, but going by track records, I would put my money on MvC3 being the better fighting game.
NRS is definitely giving us fan service, that I am not doubting, but if the game controls as slow, stiff, and unresponsive as MKDC then the game will still just be seen as a joke. Hopefully the positive reports about it feeling smoother and deeper at the last pax were right, and I look forward to seeing write ups on the game from pax east. I hope the game turns out amazing, but I've been burned before by Boon and co. promising a better fighting game (MKDA).

MvC3 is incredible. Well, the gameplay is. You can be so creative with just about every character in this game. Everyone is worth trying out. People say Sentinel is overpowered, but so what? People said Ike and Toon Link were overpowered when Smash Bros. first came out and now look at it.
MK definitely has much more content. It has more costumes, unlockables, secrets, a story mode and all of this other stuff that kicks ass. But unless MK can deliver in the category that matters most (you should know what that is) then it won't be worth a damn. You'll play it for a week and then get bored.
While having extra stages and more unlockables would've been awesome, MvC3 still has the gameplay that will last. MK needs to answer that. Right now, I'm very optimistic that MK will deliver in every category but then again this is the MK team we're dealing with. Disappointment is a common feeling around release time.

All the ranting, bitching, and complaining over the DLC being announced on the first day, I would hope NRS takes notes on this. I mean...we already know about the pre-order exclusives, and that's troubling enough but it's expected of every game these days to have them...but if they start talking about DLC right off the bat, they WILL have some fan backlash.
Personally, I don't care a whole lot as long as I feel the $60 for the game itself and what's included, is worth every penny, which it looks to be...but MvC3 just seems like such a shell of a game as it is, the DLC was a giant blow that only rubbed salt in the wounds of it's consumers. So hopefully NRS sees this as a warning. Don't lock shit on the disc, and start announcing DLC packs the day of release. At least wait a few weeks before talking DLC. And pack as much into the game as possible to make it feel like there's more than enough content and replay value etc. to make the intital price tag feel warranted, and the game itself feel complete. Any extras, or stuff you didn't complete in time, shut up about it for a few weeks at least.
I really think it was announced by Capcom, to get the fans happy that there's more coming, as to not be too upset that the game itself feels so feature less beyond the gameplay and versus mode itself. So they decided to announce attires, and likely characters and Survival and Time Attack modes etc. for future release, to keep the fans interested. However, what it ends up doing is just showing that this stuff should have been in the game, because it would make the $60 seem like a more suitable price.
By all accounts MK looks to have more than enough content on the disc to keep us happy. Let us enjoy the game, and use DLC to ENHANCE the experience when we may be getting bored of it. DLC should be used to bring us back or give us soemthing new or more to try, if we choose to spend money on it. It should not be used to make the initial game feel more complete. With around 20 stages, 28 characters, arcade, versus, story, tag team, khallenge tower, krypt, 2 attires per character, 2 fatalities, online modes like king of the hill and spectator etc...it seems like we don't have to worry, but they should still hold back DLC talk for a bit.

Wow... am I the only one who *really likes* MvC3?
I mean, don't get me wrong... I liked the array of characters in 2 better,
but I love every single new character (well, except X-23). And the graphics are amazing. I haven't played it enough to pass full judgment on it, but I don't feel disappointed at all. They did *finally* make Phoenix playable, which almost singlehandedly forgives its shortcomings to me.
And as for the rivalry with MK-
Of course MK will make people lose interest in MvC3- it'll be 2 months old at that point.
And FWIW... I've known about both games for a while now,
and I was excited by both when they were announced.
But I didn't join any Capcom/MvC forums so I could discuss my excitement over *that* game.
MK FTW, but MvC3 makes for a damn good diversion until then!

Online, MvC3 is a spamfest. And the worst thing is spamming is crazy effective. Like seriously, most of these specials have no recovery time at all. I don't know if MK9 will overtake MvC3 but it will overtake my PS3

I am fucking in love with MVC3
The only people that bitch about the game on the forums are the ones that take it WAY to seriously. I doubt MK will over take it because it has a HUGE following in the tournament community but I bet this MK game will sell more than the previous 4 games and get more recognition and longevity than others.

Having played mvc solidly for four days now I have nothing but praise for the game.
Its simple to play but has a hell of a lot of depth to it.
The cross ups and combo system is really technical you have a perfect mix of characters.
Rush down,zoning and keep away.
Sentinal is strong but hes far from unbeatable the tag assists and character selection are very important.
Only criticism I have is a lack of stages.
9.5 out of 10 from me.
MK is up against a very worthy rival. Modok is one of the most unorthodox characters Ive ever seen in a fighter, I confused the hell out of my opponents with him.

Bad thing is we already had like 4 copies traded in within like two days of MvC3 releasing. So I'm confident in MK2011 because we have far more reserves for that game than MvC3 had.

Wait, does that mean you work at GameStop?
Please give us all retro Scorpion outfits and Fatalities... pretty please!
I am fucking loving MvC3. It's been super fun and really hectic and crazy so far. MK2011 will probably be better received when it first comes out but I think MvC3 will have a much longer "life".
We'll probably have MK10 in a about two years.
As long as Capcom doesn't fuck up anymore DLC I think MvC3 will be the winner. MK games especially the recent ones tend to get boring really really quickly.

Seriously, most of the criticisms of MvsC3 are unfounded. From a gameplay perspective, it's completely solid. "Spamming" is not a criticism; there are ways around that if you know how to play the game.
It's not perfect. Lack of spectator mode and on-disc DLC blows, but those are venial sins. They're valid criticisms, but they ultimately don't weigh down on the experience. Any person who plays MvsC3 objectively already knows it's an amazing game.
Will MK9 overtake MvC3? In terms of sales, it's very possible. In terms of staying presence, it's possible, but given the predilections of the tournament scene, I wouldn't bet on it. We're just going to have to see.

playing MVC3 actually makes me bummed that Mortal Kombats tag mode is only 2 on 2 instead of 3 on 3
I rented MvsC 3 on Tuesday. I gotta say, what's so great about this game? I liked Marvel Super Heroes back in the day, but I just can't get into this game. It's just kinda goofy to me. The biggest suprise(to me)is the character selection. Especially with the Street fighter characters. Very disappointed with MvsC 3, Mortal Kombat 2011 will put it to shame.

Open combo system, X-Factor plus character assists lend to incredibly complex strategies, there is massive gameplay diversity among the characters, and breathtaking graphics... just to name a few things, that is.

I really enjoyed MvC2, but by now, I think that alot of my nostalgia might have raised the bar a bit too high for MvC3. It's a good game, a fun game, and I'm glad that I bought it. But a great game? Not for me. Not yet at least.
For one thing, it feels extremely similar to MvC2 once you wipe away the graphical polish. Sure, that's how sequels tend to feel most of the time, but being that similar to a ten year old game? That's never usually much of a compliment for most video games.
On the other hand, the lack of a story mode doesn't bother me one bit. If MKvsDC proved anything, it's that mash up style games like this should never ever ever ever have a story mode. I mean, would people like this game any more if Trish, Nathan and Wolverine (go team!) were all overtaken by

THE RAGE!?!?

Yeah, barf.
That said, a few more modes like survival would've been nice, but who knows, that could end up in DLC, so I'm not writing off the possibility.
But this whole post encompasses my thoughts of the game: It's good, it's fun, but it's not a great game and because of that, I think that there are going to be people that expected more that are disappointed.
Can MK capitalize on that? Well, sure, I suppose. I don't know to what extent. I think that MK has a bigger audience and their hype machine has been going pretty well for the last four or five months.
If anything, MvC3 coming out a few months earlier only gives fans a chance to step back in to the fighting game pool again and maybe that'll make them consider MK more if they hand't been considering it to this point.
I wouldn't even call it a direct competition between the two games. MK will sell more. Will it be better? I'll be VERY curious to see the reviews. Some of the more recent MK games that have been considered lesser products were still able to garner low 8's on many sites.
I just hope that my expectations don't get the better of me!

A lot of the negative feedback we are seeing currently about MvC3 is from all the casual bandwagon fans. In a few months time when most of the strategies have been laid out we will see MvC3 in a much greater light.
In order for MK9 to overtake MvC3 it will have to have spot-on gameplay. Story modes and fanservice are nice but the gameplay is what keeps people going for years. It still makes me a bit antsy and hesitant that MK9 hasn't received a lot of player testing compared to the other big name fighters.
Of course if we are just looking at the hype machine then MK9 will probably overtake MvC3, only to be overtaken by Tekken Tag 2, only to be overtaken by SF vs Tekken, only to be...
