Good on them, but I thought that because the ruling was unanimous there was no chance of appealing it.

Glad to hear they aren't going to back down and release a censored version.

Alien VS Predator was initially banned, but the decision was reversed upon reassessment. THey decided the violence wasn't so bad because it wasn't "real". It was aliens killing people, not people killing people.

They may decide that the cartoonish impossible violence in this is acceptable

There are many games already released under the current rating system that are just as violent and just as detailed. Hopefully they can show this without getting older games banned.

Hah! It's deginitely hard not to cringe when you see the crux of an argument resting on the obscenity of existing games that contain sex and violence. It's a very fair point about inconsistency, but I'm not sure the board needs to be given a reason to rate games any more harshly than they already do! tongue

Fortunately, it seems they're inconsistent but not as puratanical and deranged as they might be characterized by online communities. That inconsistency might help alter the outcome, along with the basic fact that the violence is completely unrealistic, is performed in an extra-human manner, and performed within a fantasy setting. Their "impact" ratings should be capable of adjusting to accomodate that stuff if anyone cares to spin it that way. This isn't the Left 4 Dead 2 situation, afterall, where the banality of weapons, the first-person perspective, common urban settings, and glorification of the violence were a major contributing factor.

There's also the concurrent issue of initiating an R18+ classification, which might not happen in time for the intended April release of the game, but is certainly another option to get MK out there.

The R18 rating already has the overwhelming support of the public, along with institutions and experts from many conservative sources (ie; churches). There's also new speculative data that the Australian games industry has begun shrinking over the last few years, almost as quickly as it grew. The argument for an R18+ classification is far more overwhelming than the awkward jostling an MA15+ MK rating would require and may be the more likely eventuality.

That and other information has been added to the original post in a recent update, so check that out, if you're so inclined.

As far as I know it isn't an appeal. They're resubmitting an identical copy of the game for a new review (which may or may not be an arbitrary but vital difference). We can probably expect it to take a while again. It's a big story, so news will probably break if a new decision is made.
