Ermac wasn't a super secret unlockable character. At least not in MK1. Ermac was a glitch, no different from Skarlet in MKII.

Has there ever been an ACTUAL super secret unlockable character?

I was thinking Reptile because he was a major secret back in the day.

Ok, I can concede those.

I just can't understand how the term has come to such prolificacy when the concept has been employed so few times in the actual games.
Edit: I think post-internet people severely underestimate the pre-internet culture's ability to find stuff out. I knew about Reptile a week after I started playing MK. And that was when it first came out.
And he wasn't an unlockable character in MK1. Only a fightable one.

Back in the old days we found stuff out by IRC through the few kids who had internet access, well, actually the ones who knew someone who had it. We knew the fatalities as they were coming out though, before the game was completely finished even. I'll never forget how much fun it was to spread false rumors though. grin That's been made much harder nowadays.

Well, in regards to Reptile, no one had to go on IRC or a BBS or the internet or anything. Someone at my local arcade got a double flawless Fatality at the Pit stage with the moon shadows. They then told the rest of us.

I didn't actually get internet access until 1995, through the University. The internet was so different in 1995. So very slow. Not as slow as MKO after a news post, but pretty damn slow.

@ Bezou
It was pretty fucking ridiculous unlocking Reptile and Noob Saibot in Mortal Kombat: Tournament Edition (though they weren't really huge secrets.) That game was a bitch to play. To unlock Noob Saibot, you had to be arcade and tag team on Normal+ (which is very difficult IMO) with every single character (including other unlockables, except Sektor.) Then you have to beat arcade on hard with Scorpion in his Reaper costume.
Needless to say, never unlocked him.

But on the note of Australia, that really sucks! I'll send over copies if need be. :)

What the hell are they thinking not instituting an R18+ rating. Its 2011, games aren't all pegged for kids anymore. Man that's a load! If I lived in Australia I would have lost my shit.

The biggest problem I see coming from this is that anyone that had a tournament edition pre order is kinda out of luck now because they are pretty much all sold out in America

I thought the tournament edition was for just america, unless i got that wrong.

Well on his twitter TMK said that he just lost his pre orders of 3 tournament editions and 1 Kollectors edition and that hes pissed cause now he has to import them and pay and extra $50

No, four "finishers." Probably 2 reg. fatalities, one retro, and one friendship.

Don't forget that brutalities are somewhere in the mix as well.

Yeah a lot of people are really confusing the report meaning 4 Fatalities per character. Its pretty obvious that its 2 Fatalities, a Brutality (voice/announcement leak) and another finisher possibly friendships like its been rumored

I like how it also confirmed that the Fatalities are available in the move set list in the game.

for the last time, THERE ARE NO FUCKING FRIENDSHIPS!!!

boon said so wwaaaayyyy back in the e3 demo. OKAY???

'up to 4 finishers' almost certainly means 2 fatalities, 1 retro fatality for some characters and 1 brutality (which hopefully incorporates the x-ray)

Then why did Ed Boon hint on twitter that there would be in this game. I remember couple of months ago someone asking if they would be in the game and his response way the typical ";) we'll see" or something like that. Also the E3 Demo was like 9 months ago... there is a good chance that things were added in the game since then

So they actually did it, hu? Looks like they got a thing against MK specifically. Other games match or breach what this game offers in a plethora of ways.

I feel bad for my aussie bros and sis'. I hope something can be done so they can have this game in the end.

They act like if the violence is real. It's animated and for pure entertainment.

Why MK's violence has never really struck me as shocking is because it's never emotional.

If it featured things like a poor pregnant woman getting attacked and brutally slaughtered just for the hell of it while she cries a river of tears, screaming and begging for mercy... then I would understand and have a problem with it myself.

But no... it's just badass bitches killing and getting killed. There's nothing shocking about it as it doesn't inspire the emotional shock, injustice, and sadness of what any REAL LIFE violent situations do.

It's just mindless violence, and against perfectly healthy, strong adults, not pregnant women, or children, or cripples, and it's not racial or sexist violence either or anything like that, so this is pure exaggeration imo.

This is the worst news I could have possably get. I had feared this ever since that first trailer.

Does anyone know, with an example to another game, if there is a good chance that a imported version from the U.K will surport online play and DLC? Obviously there is no way to know for sure right now, but I'm woundering if anyone could reassure my fears. I ask this question for both 360 and PS3.

I think a disappointing sidenote to take away from this is the fact that WB left their submission until February 15, well after Australian retailers had begun taking pre-orders and promoting the game. Seems awfully late in the cycle to be checking if the game can be released in a region notorious for inconsistent and sometimes harsh refusals.

It'd be all too easy to be suspicious of the timing, given this game's intent to promote the return to graphic violence. What better way to promote the credibility of the graphics etc than by having it controversially banned in a country prominent enough to be heard, but outside the key US market.

That's an awfully cynical way to look at it, and probably not a very sound theory as far as moving product. The thought does occur, though. Lord knows this thread already has evidence of the news working that way.

It's certainly worth remembering that the ratings situation has largely been affected by a stubborn few. Between this and the internet filter story of recent years, Australia has perhaps been miscast as a puritanical nanny state. Which doesn't really represent the Australian culture or people, at all.
