Hey, all. Only my second post in the forums. Wish it didn't have to be under these circumstances, but I seriously feel the need to interject here. Take my words however you wish. I know I'm not a warrior or champion or what-have-you, but maybe the thoughts of an outsider will help clarify the situation.
Razor and T-rex, let me first say it's a great pleasure to be talking with both you. Both of you really know your MK history and lore. For that, you deserve to be highly commended. I myself have been playing MK since the beginning (at the age of '3' no less). I don't think I have a supreme mastery over the lore like you two (being a young child through many of the games), but I do believe I have a decent understanding of what's going on where and to who in the MK universe NOW (thanks to years of recently researching the franchise in my free time).
You're both true MK Fans. I doubt anyone would question that, and no one seems to be. However, you ARE both assholes. 100%, without a doubt, puckered and unyielding assholes.
NOW, you are not assholes for pointing out flaws (sometimes glaring) in the most recent games. In fact, you're doing everyone a service by pointing out these errors. NRS may choose to fix them or not. And if they don't, then at least we know how it SHOULD be (thanks to both of you and your vigilance). And I thank you for that. Keeping track of what is canon and what isn't can be hard for some of us.
See, what makes ou both assholes is your TONE, and indeed, overal demeanor. I've read many of your posts, and I've read many of the posts regarding you. Your problem? You have a superior, holier-than-thou attitude when it comes to MK, NRS, and the opinions of others. Someone says they like the game and the changes, you come off with some smartass reply that should never have seen the light of day. NRS makes a change, you scoff. Another MK Fan likes the way the tattoos look on Quan Chi, and you go on a rant how he shouldn't have the tattoos to begin with. Ok, so be it. He shouldn't have the tattoos in accordance with the established timeline. But, that doesn't mean he can't still look cool (please excuse the double negative :D). Nor does it invalidate the fictious MK Fan's opinion of Quan Chi. You simply act like that just because you have a greater grasp on the history of MK, and you think your words carry more weight on MK. You KNOW better. You KNOW you're in a 'silent majority', and that will come to light eventually. You KNOW everyone will play the game and see it for the 'trainwreck' it is and will see that you've been right all along, and it was wrong to question you.
And that's why you're both assholes. Rather than let people form their own opinions on MK9, you think that just because you know the history inside and out, and just because you read the spoilers, you feel it's your duty to shoot down all opinions that don't conform to your own. Not only is it an asshole's attitude, it also smacks of ugly arrogance.
The history is important. No doubt. But what is even more important than that? The fun. Our experiences and the opinions we form from those experiences. The anticipation of a new MK game that NRS has obviously tried to do a good job on (be it for money or the fans). It's the thrill of kombat and playing with your best friends. Of playing in the same universe we all love, ever since 1992.
Some of the best times in my life have been playing Mortal Kombat with my big brother. Was I agonizing over the continuity? Nope. Am I upset when something in the MK universe doesn't make sense? You bet, but I NEVER let it destroy the wonderful experience MK has always brought me. Sure, some characters look dumb sometimes, but in the end, it's just a game. A game made and owned by 4 guys back in '92.
If there's a continuity error, either it will be fixed or it won't. If it doesn't, 'shrug'. It's not as though the entire history is an utter sack of shit, riddled with plot-holes. If anything, it just goes to show us all what a rich, diverse, and vast history MK does have. Sometimes, people make mistakes. Big deal.
TL;DR: You're not assholes for pointing out errors. You're assholes because you ACT like ASSHOLES. That being said, if you look past this, you're both important and valuable members of the MK community. And I would consider it an honor to challenge either of you in Mortal Kombat...or any other MK fan for that matter. We're all brothers and sisters when it comes to Mortal Kombat, regardless of our background, opinions, or familiarity with the lore.
For the love of the game...and the fond memories of fighting, long into the night, with your friend, sister, or big brother. Both in the past, and in the coming future.
^Remember that, Razor and Rex. That's what's truly important about MK.
PS: I realize I'll probably receive skulls for this, and as I stated earlier, I wish my second post didn't have to warrant that, but I truly feel I said what needed to be said.

Guys.
We are not picking everything apart because we're assholes.
We are doing it because we love Mortal Kombat. We want to see it blossom into the epic saga it always deserved to be.
It would be a different story if the series never rose above mediocrity, never baited us with intriguing characters and a rich universe. Because if that was the case,we wouldn't even bother wasting all of the time and creative juices we've been investing into it here on MKO.
But that's the thing - we know what the writers behind MK are capable of. They are more than capable of both meeting and succeeding our expectations. We know this for a fact because they've done it before.
That's why it's twice as disappointing. Because we know they can do better.

This. This is exactly what I've been thinking for so long now. Thank you for putting words on it.
@T-Rex,
Honestly, I can't tell you Cyber Sub-Zero will benefit and enrich the story. I don't know yet if he will or not. No one knows. But, at the same time, no one knew if putting Reptile in MK 1 would benefit the story. No one knew if the inclusion of Stryker would benefit the story. Or the inclusion of Kia in MK4. Or if giving Cyrax his humanity back was a good idea. ect...you get the picture.
Time will tell if it was a good idea or not.
But I'll tell you one thing, th inclusion of Cyber Sub-Zero into the story is certainly different. It's a change. And a lot of times, if you don't change, especially if you're a long-running franchise, you run into the danger of stagnation, and eventually a lack of interest from your fanbase.
So, in short, NRS took a risk, and in the end, it's their game and lore to risk. If it pays off, great! If not, then maybe they'll try something different. But at least they took a risk. I commend them for that much. I wish they'd do something with Scorpion too, to be honest. The hellfire spectre thing is a little overplayed now, imo.
I'd also like to reiterate that I in no way dislike either you or Razor. I think you both seem like dedicated fans and are probably great people in reality. If you could just lose the "I know best because I've read the spoilers, and know the history inside and out" superior attitude, you'd probably be the benevolent kings of this forum.
@Jaded-Raven
You're welcome. As with Razor and T-Rex, it's a pleasure speaking with you.
I must say your dedication to Jade is admirable. She's a rather overlooked character, imo. NRS should really put a little more spotlight on her.

Haha, how naive you are. How many people bought MKvDC the "biggest tragedy to befall the series" according to purist like you?
This game will sell by the bulletstorm regardless of what you and the butthurt masses say, and that will just encourage them to do it more. "true fans" have never stopped them from toying with the series or putting "stupid" stories in before.
I gotta dip, y'all just going buckwild with the spoilers in here now.

lolwut?
Like every other person in the world,I was pissed off when MKvsDC was announced. But I still bought it. I bought it for the same reason I'd buy the MvsC games - it was a fun little diversion. That's all it was. It wasn't a "tragedy". You want to know why?
Because it didn't pretend to be canon.

So you think the ruined story is what's going to encourage people to buy it?
I think you have it a bit backwards.

The ONLY reason the series has survived up until now was because of the hardcore fanbase. Casualfags come and go,but the hardcore fanbase stayed with the series through its highs and its absolute lows.
We've seen it through MK4 and Mythologies, when the casuals' interest in the franchise has started to wane.
We've seen it through MKvsDC.
We've seen it through fucking Special Forces.
And I'll say it again - the only reason MKDA-MKA sold anything at all was because of the hardcore fanbase, the people who actually gave a shit about the story and appreciated the new direction the series was going in. Because trust me,it sure as hell wasn't for the gameplay.

Guys, guys... You can continue arguing about this without getting anywhere.
Agree to disagree already.
This discussion is filling every thread you guys post in and it's getting old very fast now. You are beating a dead horse here... poor horse... look at it... all mutilated now... shame on you guys... shame...
