I was reading around on the net a few days ago, and I'm not exactly sure....Nor am I that sure it's a feasible thing to even want.

Let's look at Masked Sub-Zero in a few pictures:

Mk1:
Mk2:
Mk3:

These were all digitized right?

Mk4:

The switch to 3D imagery and rendering. Motion Capture ect.

MkDA:
MkD - MkA:

Better rendering//Mo-Cap

MkSM:

Looks to me like a perfect culmination between the old and the new techniques and technologies.

MkComic Book:

Sketched, then colored...probably a little bit of computer program enhancements like PhotoShop or whatever.

Mk Conquest:

Actual Photo Image.

Pretty good Vid with Subs Fatalities from Mk1-MkD
_________

Now, the question here is: Beyond bump mapping and pixel shading, what's the next step? Isn't it full on movie type CG(computer graphics)?

That's no dis-respect to b-mapping or pixel shading cuz I think they're great. Some one had mentioned that we're getting arguably close to photo realistic graphics with the current systems already.
But what I'm saying here is, aren't we right at the end of consoles being created? Beyond maybe one more good go-round of "new consoles", they'll be completely obsolete. As far as them producing a "better" visual appeal than what's already here....at least.

Systematics(gameplay) and Communications(online capabilities) are huge selling points on these new consoles of late, but if it never gets any better than what we've seen, what's the point?

CG seems like the last progression as far as visuals alone are concerned. Questions then start to come up about $$, because CG cost far more and takes alot longer to construct...Let alone trying to animate things and make it responsive to players. No way. It can't be feasible to want that as our game graphics, can it?

---
The final issue is "how real do you want it to get?"
I mean, Mortal Kombat has fatalities in it and an adult nature about it already. So, if you consider that factor alone, having an element like photo realistic graphics makes the game almost inappropriate for just about anybody. Just think about it: "Photo Realistic Death". Death, that looks like a moving photograph? wow
That's like, being able to control a N17 horror movie w/ martial arts in it or something....

No wait, that actually sounds pretty cool. lol

Anyway, what do you think?

I don't want photo-realistic graphics.

Part of the reason why fatalities and such are easy to watch is because they don't look for real. Real blood and gore, such as in movies, can be easily repulsive.

I think the graphics should look just slightly more realistic than the ones we have now, just to move away from that plastic look the characters have. Other than that, I'm content with the graphics we have now.

MK2 and MK3 quality would be nice. They look real but not too real, despite being used from photographed actors.

I'm telling you, real-life quality graphics is just gonna look gross with the blood and violence.

I want an improved 3D graphics environment. Personally, I think that if MK8 has characters looking like Marcus Fenix (less bulkier) then I'm all for it. Characters in GoW look realistic to the point where you look at the graphics as "life-like" rather than "plastic-cartoonish" (MKDA, MKDeception, MKA).

You don't need photo realistic graphics for a new MK game to make you squirm at the fatalities. MKSM, even with the cartoony graphics made me squirm at some fatalities like Kung Lao's ground saw or many chops.

The one thing I really care about as far as graphics goes is that I want to see visible damage, they almost got it right in Armageddon with the arm sockets ripped off. But where are the open wounds when you take out a heart, brain, ribs, etc? There really is NO reason why this can't be implemented for the next fighting game, unless we get that shitty "not enough time" excuse.

That's pretty agreeable. The part about moving away from the plastic look is something that touches me the most. I absolutely despise the "rubber suit" look. De-spise

I really don't understand how it's concluded that-- that part is a good technique to use on images of "people". Then, there's the issue surrounding how bulky they ended up being in MkDa-MkA too.

For a while surrounding when those games were released, I really did think it had something to do with "who" did the mo-cap. Hahaha..laughable now of course cuz I know better.

You bring up some good points.

As far as environments...I'd say go full on, or as close to photo realistic as they can get. I don't think there's a reason why we can't have "perfectly real" arenas already....I mean, I know there's an equilibrium that has to be attained for things to look right. But any "non touchable" activity(chandeliers, grass ect) , lighting, and how things in the environment react to the characters absolutely should be there in the future games.

Also, I think that if blood is splattered on stuff, it should stick around like it did in these latest games. Then, when say fatality time comes and the screen gets dark, the blood on the arena could be one of the only scenery "highlights" that happens. I think it should be passive, but I also think we should be able to tell its there if we looked for it.

I had an idea a little bit ago about how the over all scenery could react to "fatality time" too. It was to where everything "alive", or that has "fruitful color" in the arena dies or whithers away. Should look something like in that movie Silent Hill. About 2min in where the whole scenery just "dies". Of course Mortal Kombat should have their own whole scheme to this, maybe using the characteristics of fire, smoke, or blood to "drown the scene in death" but...I think it's obvious where I'm going with that. Picture frames or mirrors break and fall of the walls, plants whither away and die, birds fall from the sky, and if there's say a dog or horse or something in there, they collapse in death...ect ect.
--------

About MksM, I think the only "problem" graphically, was the only problem we should see any more in the future: "Video Game". I think the only real improvement we should see if next gen graphics resembles that of MkSm is, that more gritty, dirty feel Boon was talking about. I really liked the graphical appeal of MksM so, I think that if they used that game as a basic basis for next gen visuals, the general Mk fan base will be completely satisfied....rave even.

Yea, MkSm was about on spot......I wonder if that game was a "teaser" for what is to come sometimes..hm..

______

Now, visible physical damage. Wow. Umm... I want it too [/understatement].
.....

Ah shit, gotta go. Finish later...

Holy shit! that is brilliant... I love that entire idea you mentioned right there in that paragraph. Wow. (no sarcasm)
