I was thinking of Brotherhood of Shadow just the other day and how their has only been two members that had left and went to become good that actually made their own MK storyline, also that they were both female, Ashrah and Sareena. My problem is trying to figure out which one is cooler Sareena or Ashrah?

FYI Yes Yes I know their both WEAK.

How are they both weak? I liked using them both, and I'm fairy certain Sareena was one of the upper tier characters in Armageddon.

But anyway, I prefer Sareena of the two overall. I like her look and moves, and story/character-wise, I find her to be more interesting and sympathetic. She wants to be good in spite of herself, and as we saw in Armageddon it's not going to be easy for her.

I like Ashrah too though. She has a distinct look amongst the other female characters, and what I find most interesting about her is her apparent zeal in wanting to purify herself and other things.

If Sareena and Ashrah both stick around for future games...which personally, I think they should...I'd like to see the two interact. They could possibly be allies, since I can see Ashrah seeing a reflection in Sareena due to their similar backgrounds and wanting to help her.

But I think it'd be more interesting if they eventually developed into eachother's antitheses...maybe something like Ashrah's said zeal causing her to deem Sareena and impure monster that must be destroyed even though Sareena doesn't want to be evil.
Just aesthetically, it's be cool if they played Sareena as the "good" one of the two and Ashrah the "bad" one....since based purely on how they look, one would assume the opposite.

First off, Ashrah isn't weak; she's just difficult to handle.

Second, Sareena is obviously the cooler one, because she got banged by Sub-Zero. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Sareena, all the way. Combines sexy with Ass kicking supreme, she's no where near weak.

I never dug Ashrah. Her personality is fairly one note. I'm not at all into "It is my mission to destroy all evil!" Paladin-types. It did get a little interesting in Armageddon when we found out her sword was possibly a manipulative tool of a third party, but...eh, that means the SWORD is interesting, not the character who weilds it. Someone else could be given it and lead to a better story

Sareena, conversely, is one of the most complex and interesting characters in the whole series, has a unique and sexy look with the hair stripe and the face tattoos, and was indeed one of the best characters to use in Armageddon thanks to that incredibly speedy dagger toss and the sweet five-hit kick.

I like Sareena far more.

I think she is the one female character they should have created as opposed to Tanya, Li Mei, Ashrah, Frost, and Kira.

And at the same time, I think she's a great opportunity to capitalize on should we ever see the absence of characters like Mileena, Jade, Sindel, and probably even Sonya too.

I don't like Ashrah at all. Looks, moves...nothin'

My female roster would probably look something like this:

1. Kitana
2. Sareena
3. Nitara
4. Sonya (I think she probably needs to retire now though)
5. Mileena (maybe)
6. Jade (probably a secret though, like in MK1-2)

I like both Sareena and Ashrah, and I feel that they both have good potential for the next-gen MK games. Gameplay-wise, they're good. Sareena is better because of the cheap tactics she has.

I could see a rivalry form between the two since Sareena is a demon while Ashrah, with her zeal for destroying evil, could come into conflict with her.

I know not many people like Ashrah, but I think she's pretty distinct from the rest of the cast, and I think it would be a shame if she didn't continue on. Likewise, I think it'd be a shame if Sareena didn't continue, because we could see more from her and how she continues to struggle.

Sareena was weak.

Ashrah had possibilities, was fairly interesting and had alot more style rather than random leather-clad combat goth chick.

What the hell possibilities did she have? "I must kill all evil because it will make me more holy!" is perhaps the single most shallow character motivation MK has ever had. Ashrah is literally thinner than even Liu Kang and Johnny Cage.

Sareena has a goddamn personality and internal conflict and depth.

Apotheosis I find more interesting than the kind of internal conflict that is even less touched upon than Wolverine's ferality. Sareena was a noone.

Yeah, right... I thought I read an Armageddon bio for Sareena.

You did. Sareena's also been in one game more than Ashrah has. Not to mention she's awful popular for a "no one".

I never got the buzz about Sareena. She's a bad girl trying to be good. Right...

Look, to each their own, but I always thought of her as nothing but a background character, personality-wise, and basically filler. It's not that I hate her, or anything, she has grown on me to the point where I wouldn't mind it if she returned with an updated look. But what I really find interesting is how she would interact with other characters. The whole Sub-Zero/Noob Saibot dynamic made her interesting again, by default. But I don't get this "she's so complex" stuff. I think she's quite simple, actually.

Ashrah pretty much had an updated version of Sareena's story, and she had an awesome look. It's a shame where they went with the story, though. They started a meaningless feud with Nitara that was really never going to go anywhere. Poor girls. I think they should have just given her that purification she was after, and then realise that it is perhaps not that great.

One idea I would have liked for Ashrah: She meets Nightwolf in the Netherealm during Deception, and befriends him. They encounter Sub-Zero being tortured by Noob Saibot and Smoke, so they save him. Nightwolf defeats Smoke, and Ashrah slays Noob Saibot, earning her purification and a ticket out of the Netherealm. Nightwolf, however, has consumed too many sins and must stay, but he is impressed with Ashrah and passes on what good is left in his spirit to her, to serve as a spirit guide.

So you could have had Ashrah in MKVII with a bit more of a "Native American" look. Maybe some wolf skin, and darker colours. You could also have her blue energy replaced with green energy, and given her some special moves inspired by her spiritual connection to Nightwolf.

It's hard to explain what I truly head envisioned, but Ashrah would basically get a make-over, while still retaining a lot of her characteristics, and would become a major protagonist for Earthrealm with her power boost.

For Sareena, I think there is complexity exactly in her relationships with other characters.

I think this is mainly it. But with the new era designed to make things less cluttered, is there really room for a character who is only back because others are back?

Well, I don't know about anyone else, but I sure as shit don't want Sareena's place in the story to be defined by her relationship to Sub-Zero.

WASTE.

But wasn't that sort of her point in the story? A character to be influenced by Sub-Zero? I'm not saying that she can't nor shouldn't grow to be more than that, but it's not like she was this character with uber-depth when she was created. And really, all people see in her is the potential of a blank canvas, with some interesting ties to the story.

Maybe at first, but she's already outgrown it, in my opinion. She can easily go on without Sub-Zero.

Her potential isn't a blank canvas...it is based on more than a handful of connections to other characters. She has a defined motivation (doesn't like being a demon/slave & wants to be free of that) and apparent conflicts in the way of that goal (she has trouble controlling herself & demons are not held in high esteem within the Mortal Kombat universe).
Inherent conplexity in the very conception of her character and open possibilities grow from it. Can she free herself from guys like Quan Chi who want to enslave her? Can she rid herself of her demonic side, and if not, can she at least learn to live with it? Can she earn the trust of other heroes, if she ultimately becomes a good guy? How will she deal with people who just plain don't like demons? Delving into her past, if she's a demon, how/why is she good?
Sub-Zero himself isn't really crucial to the answering of those questions.

If you're only looking at Sareena solely from the perspective of "What can she do to make Sub-Zero or Noob Saibot's stories interesting," then yeah, I can see why you aren't interested in her or see much for her.
Sure, you could anchor her to Sub-Zero and have him be responsible for which side she ends up on and whether she gets what she wants, holding her hand every step of the way....but I'd much rather see Sareena do it on her own, as an independant protagonist, rather than an object used to give Sub-Zero vague motivation to do something.

I say that not only as a Sareena fan, but for Sub-Zero's sake too. Tying him down into the Netherealm/Noob Saibot plot is a total waste of his time. Sub-Zero should be aiming higher in his stories.
