Joker Has a Great Comeback in Injustice 2
The Joker returns in Injustice 2!

Injustice: Gods Among Us began when Superman thrust his hand through Joker's chest -- but why let facts get in the way of a funny story? The Clown Prince of Crime returns for the sequel in the latest character reveal trailer. Watch:

Joker's death played a catalytic role in defining the world of Injustice: his death - the turning point that began Superman's tyrannical rule as leader of The Regime. Despite the significance of his demise, nobdoy really seemed to mind the iconic villain's appearance on the playable roster of the first game. So why so serious now?...

There are some interesting differences in the appearance of Injustice 2's Joker, whose fashion, face and jawline deviate distinctly from the iconic ghastly grin. Could these be clues to a new man behind the maniac? Intro dialogue with Robin (Damian Wayne) flirt with the possibility that former Boy Wonder Jason Todd may've had a villainous turn, much as he did in 2001 Frank Miller sequel, The Dark Knight Strikes Again.

There's also the same 'Get Out of Murder' card played by the first game, which relied on a handy dandy parallel universe to supply iconic characters, living or dead. It might seem an easy way out, but fans of Mortal Kombat know death is usually a temporary, minor inconvenience in NetherRealm Studios games. It's all just a big joke!

Some of the more interesting details are character intro references to the "Gotham City Sirens", and the secret identities of Batwoman (Kate Kane) and Batgirl (Barbara Gordon). Wonder Twin Powers Activate in Injustice 2?!
Ed Boon plays the April Fool with Wonder Twins teaser!

Ehhhh. Not so much. Injustice 2 may have breached the surface to bring us forgotten DC Comics icons like Doctor Fate and Swamp Thing, but this obscurity is taking the form of April Fools!

Those not in-the-know may be confused by the significance of the joke teaser, tweeted by Ed Boon with the phrase "Activate!".

It's a reference to the late seventies phenomenon of The Super Friends - a DC Comics animated series of questionable quality that aired on ABC. The cartoon depicted the earnest, but limited adventures of the Justice League and their arch-villains.

The show introduced The Wonder Twins (Zan and Jayna): a mighty morphin' pair of aliens whose powers could only activate if they made physical contact. The fist bumping siblings would announce their transformation. In the case of Zan, he could assume the form of water in its various states (puddle, ice, steam. Jayna had the more enviable ability of transforming into any animal she could name, of Earth or extra terrestrial origin.

The Wonder Twins activate their powers in Super Friends.

The Wonder Twins may have a cult following that's seen them make modern appearances as recent as TV's Teen Titans Go!, but they're generally remembered as a slightly absurd artefact of their time. Each is readily replaced by similarly powered, more interesting characters like "The Element Man" Metamorpho, or zoologically powered heroes Vixen, Animal Man, and Beast Boy. All of whom we'd love to see!

Of course, comics history is built on a foundation of finding interesting qualities in past concepts and revamping them better than before. The Wonder Twins may be a tad on the nose as is, but they pose interesting possibilities a fighting game could certainly exploit!

In Mortal Kombat X, Ferra/Torr gave us a new version of tag team fighting based primarily on a floating secondary character - Ferra. We haven't seen a true tag team in Mortal Kombat's main roster since Noob Saibot and Smoke came tethered in 2004's Mortal Kombat: Deception. If NetherRealm Studios applied themselves, an adaptation of the Twin's tag-based power menu could be an innovative twist on the basic formula!
