Noob.com Updates with Liu Kang and Scorpion!

Mortal Kombat co-creator and team lead Ed Boon has updated his personal website, Noob.com, with another image concerning the upcoming Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe! Unlike the last update to his site, which featured only the word "RAGE!" (which was subsequently explained at Leipzig Game Convention), this update is a bit more straight-forward. This image shows a dramatic confrontation between Liu Kang and Scorpion. Liu Kang is in the background, standing, as if anticipating a fight. Scorpion, on the other hand, is in the foreground, staring at his hands. The expression and body language is synonymous with the cliche of someone saying, "What have I done?"

It is presumed that this image is from a cinematic, possibly in story mode. Any more than that is conjecture at this point, however. If we learn more, we'll be sure to report it here.

Midway Releases Raiden Render from Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe!

The folks over at Midway have released another set of renders from the upcoming Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe! This time, the released render is of everyone's favorite thunder god, Raiden! Raiden's appearance looks close to his Mortal Kombat II outfit with a cut similar to his Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance outfit, with the main exception being the fact that his arms are bare. The stage behind him appears to be part of a temple, possibly as part of the Wu-Shi Academy.

A high-res render has not been posted on the official site yet. As soon as it has been, we'll be sure to post it here. To see the Facebook page where the images were first posted, click here.

EDIT: The high res version of this render has been added to the official MKvsDCU site.

Gamespot Reveals New Information Concerning MK vs. DC Universe!

Gamespot recently was able to get a hands-on preview of Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe, namely the chance to play with the clown prince of crime himself, The Joker! In a fairly in depth analysis, Gamespot not only lists some of his special moves, but explains one of his fatalities as well as his overall fighting style:

And, make no mistake, the Joker can kick all kinds of button. In addition to relatively weak attacks, he's got a veritable arsenal of weapons at his disposal that you can access by pressing various button combinations. These weapons include exploding playing cards you can hurl at opponents, a joy buzzer that will electrocute your foes, and a comic boxing glove that really packs a wallop. And though we haven't seen the full roster yet, we're willing to bet that the Joker's fatality is the best in the bunch: after pulling a pistol on his dazed opponent, he pulls the trigger and a flag with the word "BANG" appears out of the barrel. Just when you think that's it, the Joker pulls out a real pistol and splits his opponents' wig. It's shocking and funny the first time you see it… just what you want from an MK fatality.

A few days ago, Ed Boon's official website was updated, hinting at "Rage", and within this article we learn what exactly this means for MKvsDCU. In addition to the other mechanics, there will be a "Rage meter", which basically will fill up when you attack, take damage and block the opponent. It sounds like combo breakers will be making their return and you can use them by depleting the rage you have stored in your meter. However, if you rage meter is able to fill, your character will become more powerful and unable to be blocked for six seconds.

Each character will have a rage meter, just underneath their health meter. You build your rage meter by taking and dealing damage, or by blocking opponent strikes. As the meter fills up, you can use breaks to block opponent strikes. If you let the rage meter build up completely, however, you can enter rage mode (by pressing the shoulder buttons). Here, you'll have roughly six seconds to kick as much butt as you possibly can. Your attacks will be more powerful and, more importantly, unblockable so, as long as you can make contact, you'll be pounding your foe into dust. Just watch out, because his or her rage meter will be similarly building--as a result, you'll have to use your rage meter at the right moment (preferably to finish off your opponent). Fail to do so, and you might find yourself on the receiving end of a rage flurry.

In addition to these new notes, Gamespot also reconfirmed the total character roster at 22, meaning with the recent Leipzig announcements, we still have two playable characters left from each side as well as the "big boss" mentioned previously. The current number of arenas is listed at 11 as well.

Midway Announces Four New Characters from MK vs DCU!
AMAZON ATTACK!

As the Leipzig Games Convention gets underway, Midway has gotten things started with a bang by issuing a press release announcing four new characters from the upcoming Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe! On the MK side, the thunder god Raiden and the Black Dragon Kano will be joining the fray! On the DC Universe side, the Amazon Wonder Woman and assassin/mercenary Deathstroke (better known to Teen Titans viewers by his real name, Slade) will be taking part.

In addition, Midway has released three renders of Wonder Woman. Two are the standard black and white background images. The third image shows Wonder Woman at what appears to be her homeland of Themyscria. A high-resolution image has not been released yet; as soon as it is, we'll post it here.

EDIT: The high res render was released soon after.

Finally, Midway has released a 30 second high-definition trailer from Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe.

There's undoubtedly more to come; as we learn more, we'll be sure to report it here!

To read the announcement press release, click here.

EDIT - 3:45 PM CDT - GameSpot has posted a video of Ed Boon announcing the new characters, complete with renders. Deathstroke looks much like his comic version from what little can be seen. Raiden's outfit is very much like a cross between his MKDA and MKII outfits. Kano, on the other hand, looks more like a cross between his MK1 and MK3 outfit (with the MKDA color scheme), and has a full beard now. Our thanks to forum member for the info on this new video!

Midway Releases Nine New Screenshots from Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe!

As the Leipzig Games Convention gets underway, the folks over at Midway have released nine new screenshots from Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe, which will be playable at the show. These screenshots primarily feature characters who have not been shown in action before, such as Liu Kang, Kitana, Green Lantern, and the Joker. The screenshots also show some of the characters' specials in action. For example, Green Lantern can use his power ring to create weapons and hold characters, while the Joker can use exploding bombs. On the MK front, Liu Kang has his classic dragon fireball projectile and flying kick, while Kitana has her fan lift back in action.

Keep it tuned here; as we get information from Leipzig, we'll be sure to report it here!

Midway Releases Green Lantern Render from Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe!

Hot on the heels of the release of the Jax render, the folks over at Midway have released a render from the DC Universe side of the upcoming Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe. This time, the character render is that of Green Lantern, specifically Hal Jordan. The environment in this render shows the headquarters of the Green Lantern Corps, with one of the Guardians (the founders of the Corps) in the background. Outside the window, a planet (presumably Oa, the Guardians' homeworld) can be seen, indicating that some of the game may not in fact take place on Earth. As with other renders, renders with black and white backgrounds have been made available as well.

As always, once the official site updates with a high-resolution image, we'll be sure to post it here.

EDIT - 3:15 PM CDT - The official site has been updated with the high-resolution render. Our thanks to forum/chat member for the heads-up on this high-res render!

Noob.com Updates with... Rage?

Mortal Kombat series co-creator and team lead Ed Boon has once again updated Noob.com, his personal website. While his website has been a place where one could find clues about the upcoming Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe, his latest update is more than a little vague and mysterious. This time, underneath the Noob.com logo, there is a single word scrawled in orange-yellow letters: "RAGE!" The reference that comes to mind with this word is that of Primal Rage, which used the word to start matches. Its current meaning is unknown.

Along with the word "RAGE", the hidden text underneath has finally changed. Since the "There Will Be Blood" poster was put up on the site, there was a hidden message underneath that said, "In case you were wondering..." This time, the hidden message says, "NY Style....". So, in total, the message says, "RAGE! NY Style...." We're not sure what this is in reference to, but it's safe to say it has something to do with MKvDCU. Only time will tell.

We'll keep an eye on the site, as always. In the meantime, feel free to discuss this latest development on the forums; as always, we'd love to hear your take on this mysterious new message.

Midway Releases MKast #5 for Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe!
Along with the Jax render, Midway has released the fifth in the series on MKast's, hosted by Hans Lo and Hector Sanchez, on the official site! The special guest was lead graphics designer and storyboard contributor, Jon Greenberg. As usual, a summary of the podcast will be provided below:
  • The Joker's fatality may be ready in time for the event in Leipzig, Germany, next week.
  • A playthrough of the story mode is estimated to take two and a half to three hours, for each side
  • A large number of NPCs will appear in cameo roles in the story mode on both sides.
  • Every character will have their own ending in Arcade mode, represented by "paintings" that sound similar to MKDA and MKD's style of endings. It was said that many easter eggs will be given for both the MK and DC sides.
  • Every character will have their own unique fighting "style" and "stance".

As always, MKO provides a download here of the MKast. Be sure to check it out for more.

Midway Releases Jax Render!

Earlier today MK_Nat over at the Midway forums released the render of Jax from the upcoming Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe! Jax appears battle ready in his bionic metal arms and combat gear. Jax also appears to be wearing the same pants and boots as his special forces counterpart, Sonya Blade.

An especially interesting note is how different Jax's face appears in this render when compared to all of his past appearances.

To view the original thread in which this render was released, click here. As always, once a high resolution version of the render is made available this post will be edited to include it.

The high res version of this render is now available.

Our thanks to MK_Nat for posting the image and to forum user for the lead on this story.

Noob.com Updated with Aquaman Reference?

Earlier today, Ed Boon's official website, Noob.com, was updated with a sketchy concept art that resembles many of the stick figure drawings found in the Krypt of Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance. This concept seems to show a character performing a fatality or brutality on another with the use of water and a shark. Most likely, this is indeed a concept of the DC Universe hero Aquaman.

The placement of a hook on his right hand (though this is historically the wrong hand) would seem to indicate that it is indeed Aquaman. However, all MK fans should keep in mind that Ed Boon has not always updated his website with factual information. One very memorable "joke" Boon placed on his website many years ago was a concept drawing for a character named Zebron. This zebra humanoid never appeared in any Mortal Kombat games despite this.

Aquaman's inclusion in the game would also conflict with the clues that Kotaku posted a while back, which have so far been quite accurate. In any event, we'll keep you posted on the details should more be forthcoming.

Midway Releases Kitana Render from Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe!

To start off this week, Midway has released a render of the sixth Mortal Kombat character appearing in the upcoming crossover Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe, Kitana! The Edenian princess stands in what must be an Edenian background as a tranquil waterfall flows behind and a royal palace can be seen in the distance.

Her costume design is clearly a redesign from her appearance in Mortal Kombat 2, with influences from later titles such as Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance.
