A chance to flesh out the background characters
Mortal Kombat has a big, rich, detailed, convoluted history involving many characters and many time periods. It struck me that there remains a vast number of characters that are simply delegated to backgrounds roles, either as people from the past, or associates that are mentioned but never truly active.
Who are some characters that you might be interested in seeing or hearing more about that otherwise exist as extras? (remember, Blaze was once a background character in the most literal sense and ultimately became the main boss of Armageddon.)
Here's a few ideas to get you started:
Scorpion's wife/son - We know Scorpion was a family man. That part of him is all but ignored until recently. We also know his family is/was dead. But we don't know much about them. Was his wife an assassin too? Was his son following in his footsteps? With the recent events of Armageddon, specifically Scorpion's ending, could these two have a chance to develop as their own independent characters?
King Jerrod - Kitana's father and Sindel's late husband who was murdered by Shao Kahn. He's been referenced several times but his status as a dead guy tends to cramp his influence. But Sindel's Armageddon mentions her resurrecting him, so obviously there's still age-old love there, and it stands to reason he might have a shot at making his first in-game appearance eventually, beyond just an off-hand plot device.
Sub-Zero's sister - This could be Frost. It couldn't not be. Nobody's ever made it very clear, specifically because Frost's background is itself an enigma. But it was known Sub-Zero has a sister who stayed with her mother back in America when Subby's daddy took him and his brother back to China. It is unknown if they had any contact after that.
The One Being - Just who, or what, is this guy/thing/entity? It was heavily speculated he would make an appearance in Armageddon, but so far he's only been spoken off, most obviously in Kai's ending. Apparently, this thing makes even the Elder Gods tremble.... hmmm.
Argus - an Elder God, and father to Rain, Taven, and Daegon. He didn't do much in Armageddon besides drive the plot forward, but Daegon's ending, and his suprising connection with Rain, makes him a rather intriguing string-puller from behind the scenes. I wouldn't mind seeing his past, especially mingling with some Edenian women, fleshed out.
Chow - Also known as "Liu Kang's dead brother". People have often speculated about if he'd ever return or make an appearance. That's pretty slim, but did it ever explain how or why he was murdered to begin with?
Gorbak - The father of Goro, and King of the Shokans, for being such a high-status character, he has yet to appear in any video game other than some slim references and some non-canon media. We love our Shokans, though, from Goro, to Kintaro, to Sheeva, so I doubt many would protest against the King of them all to make an appearance.
Daniel Blade - Yet another dead brother, but this is Sonya's brother, and actually her twin. We don't know anything other than he's dead. And he was her twin. Seems like story potential to me. Besides, who really stays dead in Mortal Kombat anyway?
Sonya's partner - He's dead. Dead as a doornail. We still don't know how. We don't even know his name. He's gone by Sparky, Cliff, and Wexler, depending on the medium. I'm sure MK: Special Forces was going to shed some light on this, but we all know that game suddenly became a Jax vs. Kano vendetta that is so non-canonical, it makes Shaolin Monks fit in perfectly with the storyline. Maybe some other time...?
Anyone else have some ideas?

1. Considering the controversy surrounding my "make the next boss a female" thread. I've become increasingly interested in Delia. Her and Argus actually. I really wonder what kinds of things an oracle is capable of in the MK Universe.
2. who the hell were the Houan? I mean, yea, I know the obvious stuff, but a sect of necromancers? Wow Raiden.
3. other members of the existing clans. We have whole clans? And no-one else exist except for the front runners? Baraka, but no second in command...or right hand man?...Same for Motaro and the centaurs.
I'm saying this with a judgment attached to it. Because I think that even if these "other characters exists in the story background of a character, doesn't mean they need to be implemented as a playable character.
I just suspect that there are more dimensions to these clans if there is always "one leader"...yknow? Somebody within that clan is pissed off that the leader is the Goro, or Motaro, or Baraka. That's their nature after all right?
4. Other than that, I like the comic book characters...even though they're not official--canon--background characters that exist.
a. Siang
b. Grum
c. Hydro
d. Abacus(other realms gods have always interested me)
e. Raidens servants Wynd and Rayne
f. A few of the other Speacial Forces members
Lastly,
5. Elder Kung Lao: I'd love to see some of the talents this guy could have had. And to learn about some of his relationships, trials and tribulations...
yea, that's all for now...maybe I'll put picture links in the comic characters..

my opinion is, i think the Lin Kuei and Shirai Ryu clans could have something to do with this next story. I highly doubt a mortal kombat game nowadays wouldnt be found without scorpion or subzero. so with that being said, i think it would be cool to learn more about thier roots, and create characters off thier storys. i would like to see a character kinda based off scorpion, aka takeda. it would be cool to see him as a ghost or something, and make a story based of the Shirai Ryu roots, kinda how like sub zero now has a story goin for him with his dead older brother previously part of the Lin Kuei, aka noob saibot.

I wouldn't mind seeing some of the various background characters get fleshed out a bit more, but I'm not very interested in seeing many...if any at all...actually appear as playable characters.
Scorpion's wife & son
Sure, I'd like to know more about these two. Name would be nice and whatnot. I do not want them to actually be resurrected. Once upon a time, I thought having Quan Chi turn Scorpion's wife into a spectre to use against him would've been cool....but the thing is, right now, Scorpion needs to get over his family. He needs to move on. I also think it'd be lame to undo the tragic event that defines Scoroion's origin. To me, resurrected Scorpion's wife and kid would be like Batman's parents of Spider-Man's Uncle Ben being brought back to life. I thinks it cheesey, wishy-washy storytelling that just dilutes the tragedy of the character.
King Jerrod
Similar feeling here. I would like to know more about Jerrod and whatnot...but do I want him back as a playable character? No. Again, cheesey, wish-washy storytelling that dilutes the tragedy of Kitana and Sindel. Jerrod should always remain the father Kitana never knew and the love Sindel lost. I think bringing back Jerrod would only cheapen those two characters.
Sub-Zero's sister
I am actually interested if there was more to the fate of Sub-Zero's sister. Apparently the Lin Kuei made her and her mother disappear...but I always wondered if there was something more to that. However, I believe it was confirmed before MK:DA came out that Frost was not the long-lost sister. And if you consider the age difference, it wouldn't make sense if she was. So with that in mind, since we already have Frost...whom is disliked by some because she's a "female Sub-Zero"...do we really need ANOTHER "female Sub-Zero?"
The One Being
The thing with the One Being is, the only way for it to actually appear is if all the realms are merged together. But if that happens, Reality is blinked out of existence and everyone will be dead. So that may create a dilemma in making the One Being appear. The only thing I could think of is having it's consciousness manifest or possesse a physical form.
Argus & Delia
I been interested in them exploring Edenia's mythology for a while. Who their gods were and where did they go when Shao Kahn took over. Looks like we've got an answer with Argus. I'd be interested in learning more about him. I'd be especially interested in Kitana's response to him....because I don't think she should be very happy with the way her god handled the Armageddon situation. I'm interested in Delia as well, as she seemed like a more compassionate counter to Argus, who came across as bit of dick.
Chow
Well, they never confirmed whether Chow was alive or dead. In MK1, he's only listed as "missing." But I can't say I'm interested in seeing him return. Because if he did, that would probably mean Liu Kang should be involved....and I'm done with Liu Kang.
Gorbak & Durok
I've never been interested in Gorbak. From what I've seen, he doesn't really bring much to the table that isn't already being brought by Goro or the other Shokan. And since Goro seems to make most of the key decisions regarding the Shokan, I suspect Gorbak is very passive or maybe so old he's in no condition to rule anymore. At any rate, when it comes to fleshing out the Shokan characters, maybe they should worry about fleshing out Kintaro and Sheeva before graduatating to Gorbak. Same feeling on Durok...even though Goro's brother was a non-canon character.
Daniel Blade
My feeling here is pretty much the same regarding Scorpion's wife and King Jerrod. Daniel could be fleshed out a bit more, perhaps we can learn the circmstances of his death....even though I don't really care about Sonya Blade that much....but I think undoing a tragic aspect of a character's origin is a bad idea.
Sonya's partner
Same deal, though it would be nice if we finally got canon confirmation on just WHY Sonya and Kano hate each other so much. It's been accepted because of the movies it was because Kano killed Sonya's partner...but they never really confirmed it to be true. Would be nice if got some onfo on who this partner may be and why he...or maybe even she...meant so much to Sonya.
The Great Kung Lao
Once again, it'd be nice if he was fleshed out a bit more in the story and we knew more about him....but a playable character? Unless it's a prequel, no thanks.
Overall, while I'm for fleshing out the background stories and various characters and the figures from their past....I think when it comes to including new characters to play as, I'd rather the MK team not raid the backstories and through in a bunch of off hand names. Same goes for Takeda, the Tengu clan, and whoever's left. I mean, say the throw in Chow Kang and Daniel Blade....what next? Johnny Cage's ex-wife Cindy?

I think the voice acting done for him caused his head to implode.
I was mainly throwing a few characters out just as ideas, good or bad regarldess. Oh, and Liu Kang's brother is Chow in the game canon and Chan in the movies.
I tried to stick with mostly just the game mythology and ignore the comics and movies, but I guess they're not off-limit either.
A few others to mull over.
Apep - Yeah, he was annoying, but what ever happened to him?
Hornbuckle - He's canon. He enslaved Blaze. Then he disappeared. Where to?
Kia & Jataaka - Sareena lucked out and became a good character. These two could be a nice counter to her.

Elemental Gods
- If Raiden was supposed to be “restarted” after death, it’s easy to imagine these three (Fire, Earth and Water) should have also. But they’d have no memory of the original Sub-Zero.
Also as far as non-canon, Siang is a favorite. I believe he was like the shaolin monk’s “secret weapon”.

Wait a minute...
Takeda is not Scorpion. Hanzo Hasashi, is Scorpion. True, Takeda was Scorpion in the MKConquest show, but none of that is canon. I wish it was though.
Takeda is the founder of the Shirai Ryu...and yea, I wanna know about him too.

I don't think we need to see any of the characters mentioned become playable (although a real name and character for Hornbuckle, probably as a new warrior from Earthrealm, would be nice), but I am not opposed to exploring their stories when they come up.
Not really a character, but a briefly introduced species.
Remember the Yeti by the Lin Kuei base in MKA’s konquest.
For the Earthrealm, that’s a cool creature. Besides that, no other species comes to mind but the people. Are all the Yetis savages? Or do they have more sense than that?
This got me thinking other mythological creatures could come into play for the earthrealm, remember any of these?
