Ed Boon says Mortal Kombat vs Street Fighter ran into a road block

Road blocks. We run into them from time to time in this game called life. When that happens, we often just change course. Such was the case with Mortal Kombat creator Ed Boon. He had originally wanted to make a Mortal Kombat vs. Street Fighter game, but he ran into...you guessed it: road blocks.
Boon said that he had tried contacting Capcom about working on a crossover game involving the two fighting franchises. Even then, the distance problem (Capcom is in Japan) made for a bit of a communication gap. Ultimately, thing's didn't quite pan out.
Despite the disappointing turn of events, Boon is still very much excited about the Midway crossover game that will be pushing through: Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe. As he put it:
I've always wanted to cross MK over since about MK4, or something like that. I'm a big fan of all of the other fighting games, Street Fighter, Tekken, what not. I always thought, wouldn't it be cool to have MK vs. SF and MK vs. Tekken and what not. We pursued some of those ideas to the extent that we could but we always ran into some kind of road block and couldn't do it.

Then FUCKING WAIT TO DO IT!....
Get the approval for the 2nd, or even third game on these current consoles....As a side game, or some shit like that....
The dumbest shit they could have done, is entered these consoles with another, TOTALLY different franchise.
They were supposed to enter with the expertise of their craft....instead? They wanted to screw around with everybody's head again, to try even harder to "sell" the game. LmaO...What a football-helmet business tactic that is...
It's already a sell-able product to a tremendous extent. HAha..They sell MK off the logo. Lol....all they'd have to do, is give what we want, and we'll take care of the sales, the crossover...and anything else they wanna do...
LmaO.....under-estimate the power of basic sales tactics...and you fuck yourself everytime. lol
They simply made the wrong choice with this one. ho-ly shit. lol

Hmm, one of the problems, I think, would be the barrier mentioned with Capcom residing in Japan. As an American company, Midway could possibly be viewed more harshly as a competitor, and I recall seeing mentions somewhere that the Mortal Kombat franchise is not taken seriously in Japan. So simply waiting for it would probably do little good.
Although the DC Comics came out of left field, it doesn't seem to me as bad as people are making it out to be with what little we've actually seen. Though I agree that it would probably make more sense to cross into another fighting game franchise - based on similarities and the wishes I've seen fans express, I think Killer Instinct would be the one for that.

Um, Predator, you may not have realized it, but your statement actually argues that in fact they did not make the wrong choice. Maybe re-read what you typed.

Don't give me that bs, I didn't diss anybody. Business is blind dude. When you make a poor decision, you're supposed to suffer the consequences. The continuity, regardless of their efforts to stay relevant due to do shock value can only last so long. And that's all MK is...A Big Shock to the genre of fighting games...Every Time they are the shocker...they make front page news evertime. They're never ignored. Lol gimme a break...
In lamens terms, that means, that you can only do one thing so long before you see a decline in sales regardless of a shocking "new" concept.
It's a terrible...IT is a TErrible concept (lol) per the type of game it is known to be...You NEVER jeopardize the product that the client is consistently buying for the sake of change. Lol That's a "small business" mistake that even huge companies have fallen to...

Now THAT is real. Because perceptions of Eastern vs Western could jeopardize the business morale....and stop a business transaction from happening.
That is very true, especially with Japan.
They are NOT like Midway in that respect because, they won't jeopardize integrity for the sake of a dollar...
They'll just stop making games...dig? *enter honor*

Those road blocks being the other franchises looking forward to bouyant sales with new instalments in their series, and the complete disinterest in slumming it with the silly 'serpents and freezing' game from America.

I ask out of curiosity, would people be less upset or more so if we would have gotten MK vs. SF? Anyone?

Doubtful. Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat are franchise rivals. Street Fighter II was vying for attention alongside Mortal Kombat II. There is still very passionate debate between fighting fans about which game was better or which franchise succeeded and failed.
They're like Mario and Sonic, two rivals in similar genres. Ultimately, they're now together in several Nintendo games.
While I wouldn't be HAPPY with the idea, Street Fighter vs. Mortal Kombat has already had a long and interesting history as competing franchises througout the last decade and a half.

Less...
Because it is what both franchises fan have been toying with for at least a decade. Make it a side game now...
THAT would have been an adequate introduction for both franchises to these new consoles.
However....

Vying for attention... in America... amongst MK fans...
I think it's only the MK side of the fence that has any illusions about the better game. The only arena MK was ever able to compete with Street Fighter in was [accumulated] story, and shitty cheap tricks.

Honestly, I'd probably have been a lot more crushed.
I think the issue with MKvsDC is down, purely, to the dangling plot lines left by MKA and the logic of putting the best foot forward into a new generaiton with a strong new game. I would've much preferred a chance to play a new MK and enjoy the story associated with that, before dabbling in a crossover, which probably could've had a much bigger buzz as a follow-up.
That would've gone double for me as a big Street Fighter fan. Had SF decided to slum it right around it's twentieth anniversary, I think it would've been a far bigger travesty and a real cost to both franchises.
Right now, it's only MK that's really undermining itself, because the DC characters are coming into this entirely removed from their arena. Noone's concern about how this game will reflect on the on-going stories at DC, but for MK, the game raises a lot of questions, and delivers a real blow to the identity of the franchise.

I think mk vs sf would have sold like crazy cause of their history.
But I wonder what kind of changes in the game would occur.

MK WAS a contender for Street Fighter II's top spot once. Both of them were huge, though. You can't undermine just how big Mortal Kombat mania was once.
From two Hollywood movies, to soundtracks, to T-shirts, to Television, to cartoons, to action figures, to cosplayers, to comic books, to promotional stunt tours, to kids Halloween costumes...
Sure, Mortal Kombat may not have been as big a hit with the xenophobic Japanese folk (I can attest to it; I was living in Japan at the time), but they don't tend to embrace anything made beyond their shores (which is their loss... Metroid Prime is great!)

Hey, America's where you make your money. I don't hear the Halo or Call of Duty people complaining that their games barely sold a dime in Japan. A few Japanese companies knew that and we got such odd, yet successful, crossovers as Marvel vs. Capcom, Kingdom Hearts, and a Spartan in Dead or Alive 4 and Spawn in Soul Calibur.
Street Fighter vs. Mortal Kombat... the best combination of East meets West since Rush Hour!... or Tiger Woods!

I think ed boon is aiming to high to compare mortal kombat to the level of street fighter and tekken he should stick to marvel or D.C or even give a go at reviving clay fighters its a more relastic goal for him and M K. To be honest the shallow end of the story line of MK is one of the best out their but sadly once you get into the deep end of the characters and story line it gets really mest up and it might have been nice and interesting in the 90s when I was 10 years old and I had my imagination to fill in all the gaps in the story but know iam to old and lazy to start creating my own plot lines and interesting stories.
Yours sincerely MAFIAHAJERI
P.S I truly believe ed boons parents made a mistake with his name and meant to call him ed NOOB as the signs of noobness must have been obvious even when he was a child.

Hey, at least Midway TRIED to contact Capcom...so for the fans that cry "why no MK/SF crossover" well, blame Capcom for not wanting to work with Midway.
Besides, most japanese companies hate american ideas like another user was saying in another thread on here....MK, GTA, Halo, Doom etc, etc....need I say more?
I guarantee you that if Capcom were to show as much interest at doing a crossover in the future as Midway has, it WILL happen but hey you know what they say? "It takes TWO to tango"

As above users have stated, MKII faired a lot better with SF2 than people often give credit for. For fast-paced gameplay, SF2 was a clear inferior, IMO. It seems strange now, but MKII was very fluid for its time. Whenever I jumped in SF2, I felt like I was on the fucking moon, and combine that with the fact that many of the defensive strategies in SF2 were just cheap bullshit. Imbalanced characters didn't originate with Marvel vs. Capcom 2; when I think completely balanced games, the only thing that comes to mind is fucking Balloon Fight. And although neither game was completely evenly tiered, I would say MKII gets the ribbon. Still, it's been years since I played either.
Not to mention special moves had MUCH more utility in MK2. From teleports to aerial attacks to paralyzing projectiles, most characters had an impressive set of abilities. For SF2, As far as I know, non-standard aerial attacks were limited mostly to Vega (Balrog, for you Japanese peeps).
SF2 was brilliant, but I think people look back on it with rose-colored lens.
