The new outfit of Rain's has a bun in his hair, gold accessories, and what looks like a shall. My guess is that Rain is already bisexual. This is just a hypothosis.

Just because one character is bisexual or homosexual or black or hispanic or whatever, that doesn't necessarily mean that the reason for adding that to the character was to "appease the PC gods". You can add diversity to your characters without that being the reason.
Anyway, people care for a number of reasons. Some homosexual players would possibly like a character they could identify with. Some gamers would like the diversity it would bring to the story (and possibly make the character deeper and more interesting). Whatever.
What does it have to do with the fighting? Nothing at all, you're right. However, so long as the MK Team isn't really going to focus on the fighting aspect of their fighting game, they should at least attempt to make the story more interesting, and diversifying their character lineup by making one, or two, or however many gay is definitely a step towards helping to differentiate the cast.

Picking up what Libra said earlier that adding different orientations/ethnicities might help players to identify more with characters, I can agree with that and I am actually waiting for a European character in MK. In MK, there has never been a European character, or none we know of. All Earth's champions appear to be East Asian or American, which is not terribly realistic.

Personnally I don't get it. Sexual orientation is not like skin color, you can't see it unless you openly admit it. Having a character openly admitting that he is gay would be way off topic.
And if a character is effeminate to show that he is gay, to me it becomes a stereotype. Not all gay people dress in pink and act like girls
