Just wondering what the financial agreement is between Midway and DC.

I want this game to fail miserably to avoid this crossover from becoming THE franchise, and im curious as to how many units need to be sold for this to considered "successful ".

The DC franchise isn't exactly mainstream popular compared to Marvel, and hardcore fighting game fans ( Those who play MvC2, SFIII, ect ) are smart enough to know that the MK team can't make a balanced competitive game to save their lives. Hardcore fans of MK also know that the story and gore is what makes Mortal Kombat what it is , both of which this game will lack. So im curious to see who this game will be marketed too and how they are going to sell it.

Personally I think they will market this game heavily around Batman for promotional purposes, since Batman has universal appeal.

I wonder what are the benefits for MK.I mean DC should be supporting greatly that project. That means better graphics, better gameplay, and many other things that compensate the lack of those you mentioned.

Interesting question.

At first I thought; "Why do you wanna know that?" But I understand now.

Anyway, I think it probably cost per character, something like 50-75thousand per character. Mmh, maybe even less than that depending on how popular the character in question is. Like Green Lantern or Martian Manhunter probably cost less than Superman or Batman...ect.

Um..I don't know about wishing ill fate on this product. But I will admit that since I'm opposed to it, I do think it's an interesting concept. I'm not blinded by fandom, so I could see positives and negatives from a flop on this game.

Positively: Maybe they'd produce what the core audience has been begging for more entirely the next time around. The concept fans seem to have in mind for the game generally speaking. Instead of jerking people around over and over, for the sake of the mighty $.

All the time, contingencies, and business tie-ups could become less an immediate priority, and let the MKTeam produce something extremely fandom-worthy again.

Maybe a huge loss on this game, would make them settle for a longer developing process, greater investment overall, and a bigger boom in the end. ?? Don't know though. More time // more money poured into the thing could allow them to expand more too. Like they did back in the day with the movie, other television spots, all the merch and everything. All motivated by a single game title.

Negatively: Could make them cut their losses, and end the series with this if it's a failure. It'd be another chapter in the saga of "good business sense". Knowing when to quit.

Negatively, if this game fails, it could make them stop making MK games altogether.

Other stuff?

I had a different opinion on this before I saw your question. But now, I think they'll spend something like 5-10 Million on this game. Somewhere in there.

1.)))I mean, you figure the UnReal Engine 3 license = something like 500 grand-1.5 million$. Max 2million since they're programmers. They probably figured they'd just create from scratch a lot of the script....Which, I think Boon did say something about that. Makes the license cheaper for the engine ultimately. Cuz they wouldn't need all the "parts of the engine"..get it?

2.)))Tops 35 developers salaries for an approximate 3yr projection could equal something like ahhmm 2million$. Maybe including Boon's money.

3.)))10-11 DC character licenses by my projection = approximately 500-600thousand$.

4.)))Manufacturing, Distribution, and Advertisement? Well, commonly, you spend the most right here. However if you're smart, and your product is getting alot of positive rave....you might spend less on commercials, and so on, and let the word of mouth do it's thing. Actually, even then you're still probably gonna spend the most money on "other people's time".

I'd give all this stuff like $2million. Pressing, and moving the units in different locations all over the world...all the pre-order content, ect Adds up clumped together with commercials traveling expenses and the like. Mere disc cases cost a lot more than commonly understood. Even if they get them in bulk, 1-2million of them cost like crazy.

5.)))They also gotta pay the writers some money. I'd say something like 20-50 grand a piece for the DC writers to come in, and to make it worth their while...

Uummm, so yea, somewhere between 5-10 mill to make the game happen.
========-------------===========

Now, Midway may have saved some money since the MKTeam was in the process of making the game when the proposal came along.

DC//Warner Bros could have also just heard about MK looking around for a crossover game, and with the New Batman movie coming out soon, just wanted to capitalize on a notable franchises capabilities. That's totally within reason. Deals happen like that all the time.

DC//Warner Bros could be just trying to realize as many forms of media as they can. I mean, you got the Batman cartoonS, a coming Batman Anime, Another movie, and then all the merch...toys ect.

So it would theoretically benefit them in more than a few ways. Even if the game flops as a matter of fact.

I can't figure out how it benefits Midway//MK beyond a successful game launch though. Because if the the game fails....that's it. Seemingly.

I think they're gonna have to sell a couple hundred thousand copies to call it a "success". 1-2 hundred thousand copies x 60$ avg cost of a game = 6-12 million$.

Just enough to recoup any overhead and the investments.

However, i think they obviously have more lucrative projections in mind...otherwise they wouldn't go ahead with the thing. MK games usually do the upper half of the hundred thousands in sales, and often breach 1 million copies shipped.

There's my hypothesis'//thoughts right now on it...may be some things missing though.

The license probally wasn't to exspensive because, in and interview Boon said that DC had approached them which promted him to make htis game.

Lots, just lots. I'm saying that because DC is a big company, but yet what do I know about financial things? I don't even know how to calculate mortages in my math class right now.
