At least that's what Kotaku's saying.

Midway borrows money for MK vs DC

From the sound of things, this game really is a fundraiser game. Better hope that "Dark Knight" momentum will draw the rabid fanboys to it.

The fact that they used the term "broke-ass", makes me question their credibility.

So, let me guess. If this game fails, we can say goodbye to the MK franchise?

Unlikely, they would sell off their assets to recoup investment money. So they would sell off the MK license, Blitz, NBA Jam, etc etc. So there would certainly be more MK's, but probably from an entirely different development team/house. But I'd wait before panicking, I've seen game companies in worse shape then midway I assure you.

I think a company like EA would snatch up the rights. MK still sells like hotcakes (so long as its a game that doesn't star Jax) and I'm sure SOME studio (preferably a good one) would take notice of that.

Gosh. Sorry I'm not a hotlink junkie.

Hey, I think Special Forces would've been a really good game, if they didn't run into the whole, Tobias leaving and whatever other issues caused them to dumb it down. The original beta footage looked pretty good.

I always wanted to see what another company could do with the MK franchise. Especially after the last failed attempt. But let's hope this game kicks ass anyway.

If not, oh well, time to let somebody else have a go at it.

We'll see... I think there can be no doubt this game will sell though.

Mortal Kombat with Def Jam mechanics? That could be interesting.

I'm not surprised. Midway doesn't seem to be doing very well. I think UT3 was a good sell for them but really they need to get their shit together..I want a new Suffering game dammit!

Def Jam was a great game on the PS2. MK with similar mechanics could be interesting indeed. But after having played Def Jam on the PS3, I've got to say "Hell no!"

I don't know what they did. Bu they ****ed up royaly. It was just no fun to play at all.

But it'd be great if the games would become more action oriented. I always wanted the games to be more like the Movies. Having free moment and not always be locked-on onto your opponent, so you can use the environment. Like running along or flipping of a wall like Sub-Zero in the first MK. Maybe swing around a pole and kick your opponent into the face. Or like in Def Jam, slam your opponent into objects.

The Vs Mode in MK:SM was the right way to go IMO. Where you had the ability to walk all over the stage, and not simply walk backward, forward or in circles. The fights should start to be more interactive and action oriented.

Alrhough, if Midway tanked, it's not like all its employees would die. Chances are whichever company were to take the Mortal Kombat franchise, would just hire most of the leads on the MK team to keep working on those games. So Boon would probably still be the lead designer of MK, just working for another company.

As long as it's not Icon, I'm all for it. Def Jam:Fight for NY kicked major ass. In fact, I posted a thread pushing this idea a while back. An MK game that uses the same engine for Kombat and Konquest. Kind of like MKSM, but much more characters, much more depth, and more game modes that use the same engine, like where you defend off like 30 or 40 ninjas at once, by yourself or with a friend. What I would do to get my hands on the MK franchise........

It would have to be faster than Def Jam mechanics.
Def Jam is a bit sluggish, which works fine for realistic fighting, because that's how humans are in real fights. It's dragging, slugging.
But with Mortal Kombat, the punching and kicking is swift and snappy. So they'd have to be faster than Def Jam characters.

Of course, of course, but really, that should depend on your character. I think everyone should have different balances of power vs speed. But really, the true focal point of a Def Jam style MK, is that once you free the player from being locked onto their opponent all the time, you can use the same engine for an adventure/action game. So now, you have Konquest and Kombat, combined. Now, every character, including your created one can have their own Konquest mode, with their own storyline. Now, you can fight multiple opponents at once. Now, you can have more than two players duking it out in one arena. And think, if they implemented the "Blazin' Move" mechanic to the Fatality system. Then, Fatalities could take place during the match, when you actually have a chance to fight back.

Well, I think there would have to be SOME level of lock on, for realism. I mean, in life, you're in a fight, you're not just gonna turn your back to the opponent and walk away casually. If I am correct, in Def Jam, you have to make some distance from your opponent before you can turn away from them, no?

Well that would explain the sudden act of making a DC versus game.

Actually, in Def Jam, as well as the previous games that used the engine (Wrestlemania 2000, WWF No Mercy) there was a button to cycle through available targets. This is practically a necessity for a game in which you would frequently fight more than one opponent at once.

But if you're fighting against one opponent, you're locked on, until you keep making distance between the two, then you end up straying off.

When some wild-eyed, eight-foot-tall maniac grabs your neck, taps the back of your favorite head up against the barroom wall, and he looks you crooked in the eye and he asks you if ya paid your dues, you just stare that big sucker right back in the eye, and you remember what ol' Jack Burton always says at a time like that: "Have ya paid your dues, Jack?" "Yes sir, the check is in the mail."

So Midway is strapped for cash...Jack Burton is intrigued.

Since I'm pressed for time at the moment, I can't really go into my own thoughts at the moment, but I would like to pose a question in relation to this thread. Granted, this may spark another thread all its own...yet I don't know what forum it should go under...probably overall MK discussion perhaps. Anyway, I'm just going to ask it here and let the rest of you do what you will with it.

What other gaming publisher(s) would you trust with the MK franchise, should the situation arise that Midway goes under? Granted, I'm merely raising a hypothetical question, so don't get angry with me and try to accuse me that I want everything to fail, because I don't. I see a lot of you would go with EA; are there any other companies out there that could make magic with the MK franchise?

And THAT'S what Jack Burton has to say at this time.

you know the idea of MK being sold to another company would have me giddy with excitement

I imagine either EA or Activision-Blizzard would probably be the ones to pick it up because those two companies are the giants right now

but

I can seriously see SEGA purchasing the license, and using MK as a weapon based fighting game, based of the Virtua Fighter system, Sort of like SEGA's Soul Calibur.

but I doubt it would happen, I imagine selling the MK license would be the absolute last resort for Midway
