General: The latest installment to the Mortal Kombat franchise begins where Deadly Alliance left off. Unfortunately, Midway and their "team" of designers don't know how to tell a story worth anything. Within the intro itself, two characters end up getting killed (Raiden and Shang Tsung), and then magically come back to life without any explanation. That's just retarded. If you remember correctly, they made a big deal about Liu Kang dying in the Deadly Alliance story line. Well... Guess what... He's back as a selectable character. Yeah, that makes sense alright... Baraka also supposedly died in the MK4 series, but he's back too. Nice planning guys... What a bunch of idiots.
The game engine itself is almost a replica of Deadly Alliance, which wasn't that good then, and isn't that good now. Some stages include multiple levels and pit fatalities, not a bad element, but it could have been done better. They even brought back a few classic stages from previous Mortal Kombats, and they actually did a pretty good job on most of them. Each character has a selection of two fatalities, and one Hara-Kiri (where the player can kill himself at the end of a match). Yay.
MK: Deception includes two mini games, Chess Kombat (which isn't bad), and a ripped off version of Super Puzzle Fighter. Capcom should sue their balls off. The Krypt is back, with loads of useless crap to unlock. Some of those commentary movies are simply hilarious to watch though. You've got to hear Boon tell the audience how his favorite character is Scorpion. What a moron. The Konquest mode is somewhat fun, somewhat monotonous. It's like a dollar store version of Shenmue. Some of the dialouge is so stupid that it's funny, and it actually made me want to keep playing all the way through, just to see how stupid they could get.
No, I'm not done bashing this game... Remember the new characters they introduced in Deadly Alliance? Hmm. Nitara, Mavado, Hsu Hao... Well, they're not playable, but you can see them in the jail stage, behind bars where those shitty designs belong. Ha Ha Ha... That's just great... Why introduce new characters in one game, and in the sequel, stick them in the background? Why? Because Midway realized how shitty those designs were and they had nothing better to do. And don't worry, MK: Deception has a brand new batch of stupid designs. I've got no words for some of them... But Noob Smoke is the no doubt the top tier of most retardedly named characters ever. *Shakes head*
Overall, MK: Deception isn't terrible in casual play... You can still have some fun projectile wars, and if you waste some brain space to memorize some of the combos, you can "type your friends an ass kicking." ... So, anyone want to play some Soul Calibur 2?
Manufacturer: Midway
Platforms: Playstation 2, X-box
Year: 2004
Characters: Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Sonya, Kenshi, Ermac, Baraka, Mileena, Nightwolf, Noob Smoke, Darrius, Kira, Kobra, Kabal, Li Mei, Shujinko, Tanya, Raiden, Jade, Hotaru, Havik, Dairou, Bo Rai Cho, Ashrah, Sindel
Comment: It's true, this game is garbage... The presentation feels rushed, and I even think MK: Deadly Alliance was more thought out and had a better overall presentation. However, I'd say the game is worth the money simply because it's good, stupid entertainment. There's no doubt you'll find yourself laughing at random things within the game. It's good stuff... But surely don't expect anything close to a quality fighting engine.

Who wrote this? Some kid?or a real reviewer?
A couple of the things he says are right... he's not that ignorant... but he has to know that MK is an acquired taste... you have to love it or hate it... if you like your marmalade... don't eat marmite... MK it's not just a fightting game... It's a genere of it's own.... you can't compare it to SNK, Capcom, Namko etc etc...

He did nit-pick quite a bit I'll admit, my guess is something happened to him and he decided to abuse the next game he reviewed or something
but when you see past the general harshness and see what he's saying, he is right in a lot of aspects about the gameplay.
I mainly disagree with him having a go at the MK storyline, I'm not entirely sure what he was expecting from such a fantasy + supernatural world such as Mortal kombat, but he should be used to ressurections in some form by now.

Obviously, he is not very fond of MK, looking at some of his comments. But some of them are pretty much right on the ball.

Well I agreew ith him on some parts but some of it is just harsh the fighting isn't even bad. The stages do need work though well some of them and Noobsmoke is a great idea maybe with a diffrent name and better moves and fatlaities though.
But that was just wrong well I hope MK7 comes out on the PS3 because I don't like these PS2 graphics because they probably won't get better.
But MK is wayyy diffrent fromlike CAPCOM and SNK so you can't compare it.

Well he should have researched a bit more on the story before trashing it. He didnt even bother to check about why raiden is still living..he just assumed there is not explaination. And I didnt see shang Tsung anywhere but konquest...which took place BEFORE the decpetion tournament. Anyway Mk is not for every fighting fan, but I for one think its hella fun.

Frankie is a dork that steals animations and art and has retarded views on certain characters and games (LOLOLOL KENSOU IS TEH CL0NE OF LION EVEN THOUGH THEY ARE N0THNG A LIKE LOL AND IORI IS TEH GREATEST OMG!!11!one!!1!) but I have to agree with his views on Deception for the most part. I love MK, I really do but I seriously can't stand Deception... And I'm not sure if I'll even buy another MK fighting game again, MK will always be a rent -first game for me now.

The fighting engine was the most accurate part of his whole review. It wasn't good then, and definitely isn't good now. The stages have creativity, but they don't look polished.
Noob-Smoke owns. Period. Their fatality hurts their image a lot, though.
As for the graphics argument, MK can look better. It's not the PS2 that's the issue, it's the 3D modelers and designers. They did a nice job designing the stages, but their actual in game model lacks in polish, as I stated earlier. Look at the stages and character models in Soul Calibur 2, mostly. That's nicely polished. MKD isn't, for the most part, which is why the characters look like plastic and some of the effects look strange/dull. Compare the water in the Yin/Yang stage to the water in Tekken 4's and VF4's beach stages. You can't say it's the PS2's fault, because these games came before MKD and still have nicer visual effects and models.

I agree with a lot of what he says, but he also says some things that don't make any sense, like the Noob Smoke name comment.
I think he's overly harsh, but I also think he's right on most things he said whether good or bad.
Like the saying goes, "truth hurts" and sometimes....it does.
I liked the overall presentation of the game, it's just when you go in to the details that I see a lot of problems.
If I were an MK developer and read that, I'd be pretty pissed, but then I'd have to realize, is he laying? For the most part no, he's telling the truth but on some things he just doesn't know what he's talking about.

Bullshit. Raiden and Shang Tsung wasn't killed, only defeated. Liu Kang come back in "undead" forms. And, of course, Baraka doesn't die in MK4. But well, M.Bison NEVER DIES AND "MAGICALLY" COME BACK TO LIFE (sarcasm), and Heihachi Michima dies in the intro... but in the last seconds, he come back to life in a "demon" form. MK had BETTER storylines like Street Fighter or Tekken.

The final bullshit comment... obviously, any American Fighting Game can't be better than a Japanese Fighting Game for FightersGeneration...... probably MK: Deception isn't the best fighting game, but is a great game that in some aspects kick ass all the fighting games of the world.

Forget this guy, and where is this review from?? I don't think it matters anyways, because if I want to read a review of a game i go to Gamespot or IGN. They are the most reliable sources for game reviewing, and they aren't against any game like this guy is. So for me GS gave D and 8.5 and IGN an 8.7 so that tells me that D is a good and fun game. So whoever wrote this review I got three words for him: Fuck Off Bitch!

That's the thing. He's not talking about the simplicity or complexity of the combos. He's referring to the fact that the matches are nothing but 'projectile wars' and dial-a-combos all over. That is probably why he said you can 'type your friends an ass kicking', because using dial-a-combos to the monotonous extent that MKD has taken it will make some people feel that they are indeed 'typing' buttons in some order, without use of strategy. The MKD fighting engine is limited as such.

WHOA!
this guy needs to get the sand out of his vagina and calm down. its only a video game. mk is great but u cant compare it to the jappenese games because the jappenese can make theres better because of better technology. mk is the best american fighter game in my opinon and my favorite sereies of all time. he does make valid points but just needs to tone down the bashing.
yes the fighting engine isnt the best but mk will soon fix it hopefully. its not that bad its just bashed.
combos are easier in mk which shouldnt be bashed. the combos are nt that bad
the story of mk is one of its strong points. its a game thats why its gonna have a fantasy sci-fi kinda feel to the story. the jappenese fighting stories are more garbage then mk. mk has one of the best stories. look at some of the games and animes from japan. you will see that they have bullshit stories. (not all anime stories are bad just trying to calm down the anime fans)
noob smoke is a good idea and shouldnt be bashed reallly hard.
mk7 sounds kick ass but midway should not go back to mk2 mk3 are quite yet. they should finsh the story and then have games that show the side stories.
my opinon on why people bash mk. mk use to be on top till mk4. then it fell because mk4 was so terrible. street fighter and tekken and king of fighters fell to the might of mk from mk mk2 and mk3.

Well since everyone is putting in their two cents, I guess I will too:
1. He is dead on balls accurate about the fighting system. It's just not that good.
2. Frank from Fightersgeneration has always made it obvious that he doesn't care too much for the MK series. He does on the otherhand love SNK's King of Fighters games and Street Fighter(So he does have good taste in games).
3. So what if he's harsh? If what he said really affects your opinion on the game then that's your problem.
4. Obviously people here are going to have an uproar over this. But let's face facts people; Mortal Kobat isn't exactly top tier gaming. Hell it's barely second tier gaming. So when he say's it good for a "casual game" he isn't far off.
5. The way he describes the Konquest mode was the same way I laughed about it. The VO in MKD is laughably bad, but of course I'd find that funny just look at my avatar and sig combo (those who'll catch the reference).
6. The score. Yes it's harsh. Yes I feel it was a little too low (I'd have given it a 6), but he bases it mostly around the figting engine, which is pretty piss poor.

Why are we giving a shit about what the guy said? Mk is the best game series and will always be, idiots like the guy who wrote the review will try an brake it down but it will always remain. After reading that review, even a kid would know he's a cloddish fool but leave his ass.
Warning; Anytime you read a bad review and the person is telling you about another game, forget about the review and go on.

Yeah but you forgot to include how he called boon and midway morons and idiots, i think Frank was just completely rude and ignorant. Things he mentioned in terms of story are just complety false. Though liu kang returns in the game he didnt even mention that he returns in the form of a zombie and a ghost. Also he didnt even include some of the interesting stuff of MkD such as breakers and online play. This review is bias.
