With the smaller number of characters and the revamped engine and everything, will Shang Tsung get his signature ability back?

Smaller... It's still 20. I don't think they could do it.
But it would be nice. I'd actually settle for "Limited" like you had the option to do on Trilogy. To have you morph into your enemy as well as 2 other fighters of choice with no loading time.

Shang probably won't get that back for a while. We're in 3-D now and its harder to do. So Shang's shape-shifting ability is something we'll only be seeing in cut scenes.

No Boon said he is able to do it.

You know... It would really be cool to see another 2D MK game. With fully HD digitized actors.

Proof? Link? If he was we would have seen it by now.

BiohazardEXTREME, Umm lets not give midway any ideas, lol. I think Shang will get shapeshifting back without going back to 2D, how? I don't know, when? Maybe years from now but he'll get it back.

What do you mean? What's wrong with that idea? Mortal Kombat was awesome in 2D. Heck, my 2 favorite MK games are from the 2D era.
And there hasn't been a truly HD 2D game. I think it would have a very interesting look, I mean, when you can see Digitized 2D sprites in such detail. It could be amazing.

I'm kinda liking 3-D. Plus, MK is pretty much still 2-D, its not really interactive.

I don't dislike 3D MK, but I liked the faked live action look. Plus it gave the characters more personality, because then you know there's a person behind that face.
I mean, Richard Divizio, John Turk, Carlos Pesina, Sal Divita... Among the MK community they're legends simply for being the faces behind the characters.
I guess I just miss that era.

But still, don't you think it would be really cool to see a 2D game in HD? I mean, Mortal Kombat aside. To have sprites that huge, that detailed. I think it's an idea worth exploring. But with MK, it would also add a touch of uniqueness. They'd ask, "What's so special about this game?" and the answer would be, "It's the first truly HD 2-Dimentional game."

No he doesn't have it, and we should expect that he will not get it back as something that we can control in-game.

Too much programming, and not enough space to file it all under the one character.

So they can go back to palletswapping? Thanks but no thanks.

It's already been said that Shang can't morph.

Hrm. Well I still stand by that his Soul Steal move should also steal one of his opponents moves. Just one. That shouldn't be too complicated, innit?

Boon said in some interview, that the reason they can't do his shapeshifting anymore is due to space. A ROM had everything preloaded, but they would have to load everything, and delay the fight during that time.

They palette swapped because they had to. Now, with Blu-Ray technology and such, they'd have plenty of space to even have unique ninja sprites.
Besides, Scorpion, Sub-Zero and Reptile were all palette swaps, yet they're pretty much the most popular Mortal Kombat characters, and always were. So obviously it wasn't a bad idea at the time.

I would like to see Shang morph again, and do hope that the team will be able to do it sometime in the near future. I think his morphing was as much a staple to him as freezing was to Sub-Zero and the spear was to Scorpion.

I'm rather disappointed with the moves Shang has while he remains morphless. The soul energy-drain and Mysterious Magic teleport attack were cool and original....but the rest is a bunch of fireball variants. MK vs. DC is giving him Quan Chi's slide-kick and Dairou's and Blaze's teleports; but if the team cannot make Shang morph, I suggest giving him some original moves and taking away the "thousand-ways-to-shoot-a-fireball."

Not complaining, just constructive criticism for possible future enhancement of one of my old favorites. All hail Shang Tsung! smile

I always thought his rising skull move from MK3 was something interesting and original.
But that's what was awesome about shang tsung's fireballs in the first place, they were shaped like fire skulls. The worst thing about his fireballs in MKDA/MKA was that they were just generic fire looking. Quan Chi's projectile remained a skull, so I don't see why they didn't keep Shang Tsung's projectile as a skull.

Soul Steal needs to be back as a fatality. And I don't mean the sad little display we saw in MKDA. I'm talking about simply stealing the soul and leaving his opponent dead and withered. It was one of my absolute favorite fatalities in MK2, just becase you see the green, withered corpse of the opponent afterward.

they should do what they had in trilogy were you can only choose 2 characters you can morph into, that wouldent be too hard to do

and plus morphin with shang tsung is just so cool

As mentioned, I guess numerous transformations of a single character are too much for this technology...

But, then, it could be done in MK3!... HAH! Paradox !

Less data to load. In the arcades, everything could be brought up in an instant. Its just not practical with a console, to try to load high memory characters.

The shape-shifting method is the same as the double-man method.

When the button combination is put in for Shang to change, the graphics code should simply switch from "Shang Tsung vs Whoever" to "Double-Man".

Simple. Shouldn't be too hard.
