It was actually stated both, in MkT and Mk4, that they were friends in J. Cages bio, of course the statement was general but you obviously know who he is referring to, if not, something would had been said about it.
Its logical to assume who are friends with who, because then, technically, no one would be friends with no one since its not really stated much in any of the games. As for a possible love-relation, hints (which I have typed way too much in the past already, lol) or bits of trivia have been given in the games and official comic book.

It may not be canon, but alot of the components in the game are things that the MK team is dancing around as being canon.

the intro is too damn fast, least for me.. not to mention i cant watch the high-res version and that one isnt on youtube.. so everything is near impossible for me to see [the guy who appears on that cliff at the beginning is unable to be seen at all in the low-res one.. geez]..
the cage and sonya thing only lasts for like, a second.. and quan chi is in the damn way and they are on the edge of the screen, so i can BARELY see her fall off... i dont see whats so funny about it, it isnt funny if i cant actually see it... *sigh*
Edit: ok, nevermind, after backing up and repeating the 2 second scene over and over again, i finally see it better, though its still kinda dark.. ya know, i wasnt expecting that, but i think i can understand... he probably got sick of her dressing like a whore with skin tight outfits and that thong, and he decided to kill her, yay!

Still, I want these two to get married, and since the intro “supposedly” doesn’t mean anything at all, then maybe theres still a chance, or was it just a hint to let us know Sonya will never be with the goofy Mk kid of Mk?
Or is Cage somehow still possessed or tainted by evil? hmmm...

But in all seriousness, what I dislike about it, its that it really takes away the “loyal and faithful” factor of Johnny Cages character, even though he can be egotistic and annoying, he is still true to his friends....thevid, canon or not, just proves the opposite.
And that really sucks. It looks funny, but in essence it sucks and it was lame. Just like how the intro visually looks awesome, but theres no depth to it.
It sucks.
