Some of you may know me, most of you probably don't. I co-wrote the strategy guide for MKD and was the sole writer for the MKA guide. I know most of you didn't like either guide and it's always difficult to please the higher level players, but I like to put all that I can in my guides so I'm here.
Now I don't know for sure if I'll be authoring the MK8 guide, but since I did the last two and I'm usually the guy that does most of the fighting game guides, I'm assuming I'll be handling MK8.
Since it looks like the game will be formally announced very soon (just going by Boon's past statements and Noob.com, I have no insider info), I thought I'd drop by here and ask what you guys want to see in the guide.
What did you like and what didn't you like about the MKA guide?
I always try to get frame data for my fighting game guides, but most developers don't have the time to provide it and frame data isn't nearly as important in MK as it is in Tekken, VF or a few other fighters. So what would you guys like to see?
Thanks!

I also was more referring to the fighting game aspects of the guide. Everything else will be covered as it should, but it's the fighting game aspects where I believe I can improve upon the guide given feedback from the community.
I'm looking for the high level stuff you guys would like included. Like frame data for Tekken or VF, what things would you like to see that are generally lacking in MK guides?

... Oh, or those magic eye things!
I see Outworld! Freaaaaky!
And, a guide that's acutally complete and accurate with no missing details. It's called a guide for a reason.
CHEERS!
No misspelled words. I hate that.

What? That makes no common sense.
At any rate, I would like the guide to come with more eye popping information about MK8. More intricate details about things we didn't know about. How to get a secret without actually finding out what it is. It ruins the surprise factor.
Thinga that make you go WOW! GLAD I READ THAT!

things that really confused me of mkd, were the items in conquest mode that have absolutely no use. and there was no evidence anywhere to see whether or not there was a use for them, ccreating the ongoing question of whether there is anything left to discover in mkd konquest.
the order realm boundry glitch, the temple in earthrealm(village) re-entry possibility.
what are thos keys sed for? where is the green one?
whats the ninja star used for?
stuff like that... many quesitons surounding kochal.
too many, the super unlockables. lmfao

Other random stuff:
: Some of the past guides have oddly been missing the button translations for each system. Hp Lp Hk Lk Blk, according to the controller for whatever system... Don't know if you're responsible for those guides...but it's worth mentioning. Especially with them revising everything.
:: I want ALOT of art. Full body character stocks//renders...front, back, top, side poses...whatever you can get. I'm more inclined to buy, and keep the guides for years as a result of alot of good art.
::: Give us some semblance of the difficulty level of certain moves and combos. Ameture, Novice, Pro, Expert...whatever.
:::: Game story and Bios. nuff said.

I dig that. Sometimes, all you need is "Where is it", or "What is it"...or in the case of MkD's Konquest, "When it is".
Post more later..

And for the guides of the past, pre MKDA all had full body portraits of the characters. If they make them, use them. Don't cut them up and make collages out of'em, introduce the character so we get a good view of who we're going to use.
That was one of my many peeves with the MKA guide, is that it really didn't give you a good look at the characters. We got a mug shot or a VS shot, or something half- done. I primarily buy the guides for the combos, quick Reference and mainly the art.
Please keep this in mind. You need to keep the renders and art in there.
Also, pre-MKDA guides would have a section somewhere showing the character's alternate costume and how to get it, showing us what the other side of the character is would help us to know what was kept in the game and what was left out - costume wise.

Umm... yes it does.
On topic, I think that MK:8 Guide should have the whole character thing that MK:D had. You know, the one with the list of allies, enemies and stuff? That was cool. And it will help with MK:8 because the characters will be mostly new (apparently).

Book length is great, I'd rather not pick up another 128 page guide and it be only 2 pages per character.

I'm not going to start a fight here, but what I said makes perfect scense, Outworld.
Here's the thing, I understand nobody is perfect in a world, but this thing makes no sense towards me:
I remember when Deception came out (Even though I'm not talking about the guide here) my brother bought the special edition version of Deception which featured two games in one. You had the choice to pick several characters and my brother bought the Sub-Zero version of the special edition box. Inside it, it showed us the bio for Sub-Zero, I was reading everything is said and I was like WTF because I saw this, and I'm not lying here:
Sub-Zero
Place of Origin - Earthrealm
Alignment - Neutral
Allies - None
Foes - Quan Chi, Drahmin, Mokoch, Sub-Zero
While still in Outworld, the Lin Kuei Grand Master Sub-Zero discovers his true heritage - the source of his master over cold. This discovery will aid him in the fight against the Dragon King's Tarkatan hordes.
You want that in the guide? Certainly not. How the hell is Sub-Zero a foe against himself? Who the fuck is Mokoch, and Sub-Zero is certainly not neutral.
Even that little metal card that you get in the box had misspelling words in it... his bio was fixed and everything, but who the hell spells Scorpion SCROPIAN? What, the, fuck!?!?
You're saying Outworld, that you would rather have unaccurate information about MK characters and annoying misspelled words that SHOULDN'T be misspelled like Scoprion, in a guide? You may want it, but I'm certain that some MK players would not like to open a guide and see that Mileena's bio (let's say she returned) had Kitana's bio instead. And that if Shang Tsung returned, his bio was actually Liu Kang's bio in Deception. Yeah, that's not right.
CHEERS!

OK. You didn't just expect me to stay quiet and give no response did you?
I was referring to what sub-frost said as describing the whole game. No missing details. You cannot possibly include every detail, can you? Go ahead and try not to edit sub-frost055's message next time. Why not include the whole thing eh?

I love the background info (characters, scenarios, everything), and I like too the initial sketchs and concepts (incluiding the descarted ones), so in the measure that it's possible, to add all the details, for insignificant that should seem to you, because they can be charmed with to many fans.
And about the gameplay, this will be more hard for the fact that the guide is released in the same dates of the game, but with this handicap, a guide for Novice, Pro, Expert (or at least, Novice & Pro), and also Online (if with bad luck affected and we have lag, the advantages & disadvantages).
This is because a easy character for a Novice, can be a poor character for an Expert, and viceversa, an aparent bad character for a Novice, can be a high tier for an Expert. Also the scenarios that the character works better and worse, and the rivals (in the same grade) that the char has advantage and the rivals that fights with handicap.
And the secrets, if they are included of subtle form, much better.

Yeah, I know when I buy a book I don't expect anything resembling a finished product. You can't expect details about every level, or secret!
Pshaw! Why would I want a complete guide? It's asking too much! They're gamers! NOT GODS!!!

Except maybe the God of War 2 one with the artbook and stuff, but that one really covered all the bases.
I really would like a complete guide this time, though.

Question: What did you like and what didn't you like about the MKA guide?
What I like about the guide was the fact that it went in to detail about how a particular character stacked up against the various types (i.e. Poking, Power, Distance etc.) What i did not like was the fact that the characters seemed to be a bit misrepresented in the description of their abilities.
For example: Both Blaze and Motaro were listed as LOW TIER characters. It turned out that Blaze is the best character in the game and Motaro has an invincible Mule-Kick that pretty much owns any move in the game. There are loads of other examples where characters were misrepresented but the list is too long. Most of us found this out within hours of playing the game.
I liked the combo listing but unfortunately, the combos listed under "Best Combo" were nowhere near the character's best combo. Within minutes, I was able to produce non-glitch combos in the 40-50% or higher range with various characters. It all goes back to my experience playing MKD.

Uh..how's it goin?
(just got here when you left)

If we are talking retail Game Guide ....
The most important thing the guide needs to include is Fatality inputs, codes and secrets / unlockables. First off, call me crazy, but MK is all about the fatalities, and one of the most frustrating things about Deception, was that from day one I couldn't use all of the fatalities because they weren't found yet. Same goes for codes and secrets.
Now sure some people like finding things on their own, ( though I dont see how finding a fatality on your own is even remotely enjoyable considering you have a better chance of finding the cure for cancer ) and like to figure out the secrets and what not , but I have a full time job and kids. I dont have time to figure all that stuff out, and nothing sucks more than buying a strategy guide only to find that it has the same info as the game manual plus some artwork.
To me if a game guide does not tell you EVERYTHING, then its a waste of money, and its misleading to the consumer. It would be like buying an incomplete game, or watching a movie that never filmed an ending.
So to answer your question, I want EVERYTHING in the guide, and if you dont know EVERYTHING or dont have access to EVERYTHING, then wait until you do know EVERYTHING to write it, especially if this guide is going to be sold.

LOL! It's going pretty good man. I've been away for a while but I come by periodically to check for updates and to add my input to important topics. I've been busy with my wife and kid in addition to developing graphics and animations using Flash CS3 for my job. My knowledge of ActionScript 3.0 programming is proving invaluable at my place of employment. I am the only guy on my team who can program interactivty into the online college corses that we produce.
If ever the axe comes down to trim the fat, I have no worries due to my vast skillset. I warned everyone on my team that they should learn that shizzle lol!
Peace

One thing I would like to point out is the fact that I don't have an endless amount of time to work on the guide. With MKA this was especially difficult due to the size of Konquest and the sheer number of characters in the game.
There are deadlines, so I can't spend even a full day working on a single character (when you have 60+ to work on). In addition, as with any fighting game, things change during the development cycle. I discovered a lot of broken combos (Kano had an infinite) when I first went through every character in MKA. However, when I thought I was done with that section, I received a new build of the game with the combo mechanics drastically changed.
With the new game I'm assuming there won't be 60+ characters and we'll be back to a normal sized roster. So I'm hoping I'll have enough time to really go through it. However, with any moderately deep fighter, the best strats/combos are almost always found weeks/months after release.
I want the guide to be able to give novice players the ability to reach a higher level of play, while still giving the higher level players something to read about.

Thank you for the input and please keep it coming. I know a lot of casual players will buy the guide, but I'd also like to make it appealing to the hardcore players as well.

I agree with the gameplay aspects, though it has to be visually appealing as well for us to actually want it. Alot of stuff ( Game Art ) Was cropped from the MKA book and it could really use a rehaul in the new guide.
