Great Games You Hate

There are some games out there that are good. REALLY good. And yet you despise them just as much as you love them. I'm not talking about games everyone else loves and you don't like. I'm talking about games you KNOW are really amazing games, but for some reason or another you just outright hate them.

Allow me to share some of my "games I love and hate".

Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion - Some people call this one of the greatest RPGs ever made, a huge, rich world full of diverse quests, robust talent and skill trees, a compelling world and narrative, interesting characters, beautiful environments, and much longevity. They're right. Oblivion is all those things, a thoroughly deep and engrossing game full of wonder and excitement.

And I HATE it.

Not for what it does right, mind you. It's still a great game, but I detest the game in equal measure for it's unsightly, physically deformed and creepy character models, it's clunky combat and controls, it's myriad of bugs and glitches, it's droning sampling of the same 5 voice actors over and over, and it's long stretches of boring empty spaces, uninteresting dungeons, and more worthless loot than a garbage heap. Plain and simple, I acknowledge the game is GREAT... and yet still managed to end up hating it. I just didn't have fun. I honestly had more fun with the quirky, cheesy, and equally garbled Two Worlds II.

Metal Gear Solid 2 - I haven't played a Metal Gear Solid game since MGS2, even though I still claim to be a huge fan of the series, and indeed Metal Gear Solid 1 is one of my favorite games. But MGS2 left such a poor aftertaste in my mouth that I basically skipped out buying the other games and just watched youtube videos instead to follow the plot.

But Metal Gear Solid 2 is a great game. It sounds and looks amazing. It was a technical marvel when it came out. It was ambitious, even fun, fresh, daring, and truly showed what games with a budget and touch of cinematic flair could be.

But the game almost seemed like it WANTED me to hate it. When it was getting good, the game, every time, pulled a fast one and made it unenjoyable. The bait-and-switch with Snake for Raiden was one thing, but then you have the escort missions with Emma, the heckling of Rose, the creepy sexual issues of Otacon, the unexplained supernatural elements of Fortune and Vamp, naked cartwheels, never-ending cutscenes, and more red herrings, plot twists, contradictions, and "WTF" moments for anybody to understand, follow, or ultimately care about. In Metal Gear Solid 1, there was a very clear-cut ending, building to an exciting climax, and offering a satisfying resolution. MGS2 had none of those elements, baring an awkward sword fight on Capital Hill. It was a game I was glad was over, and I've ignored its existence, and it's follow-ups, ever since.

Ninja Gaiden Black - Ninja Gaiden Black is one of the best games EVER made with cutting edge graphics, intelligent puzzles and level design, epic boss battles, tons of extra content, and quite possibly the most in-depth, deep, rewarding, and satisfying combat system ever put into an action game.

Yeah, too bad less than 1% of players will see or enjoy even half of what the game has to offer. I'd even say that less than 5% ever made it through the tutorial level.

Yes, Ninja Gaiden games are difficult, but by demanding zen-like perfection from EVERYONE, even on the easiest difficulties, NGB ensures that only the most hardcore, elitist, and anti-social or masochistic gamers can fully enjoy the game and it's wealth of missions and modes. What's the point of having a fun fighting system if the game punishes you enough to quit the game long before you come close to tapping into all that it has to offer? It's a game where the difficulty alone at time destroys the fun and ruins what would in any other case be one of my favorite games of all time. Is it impossible? No, but it is grueling, and ever time I die a cheap death I look at the pile of games I haven't played yet and wish I was having fun with them instead.

Dragon Age: Origins - I love Bioware to bits. Mass Effect. Jade Empire. KOTOR. Balder's Gate. These guys rock. And as a huge fantasy fan, I was very eager to get my hands on DA: Origins, especially since everyone else was throwing high scores at it. The soundtrack and voice work especially sold me on the game, and I was certainly satisfied on those ends.

And it's a great game... but, boy, do I tend to hate playing the game at times. It feels and looks largely outdated, the combat is painfully slow and battles linger long past comfort levels, I don't care for the inventory system, and it seems like it takes forever to make to to the "good" parts of the game, having to grind through waves of either monsters or monotonous side-quests before the game allows itself to open up or give you the good missions, locales, or even characters.

Dragon Age remains the only game I have to rest my eyes from. Perhaps it was a mistake to get Enslaved: Odyssey to the West and Dragon Age at the same time, but whereas one game is a gorgeous game bursting full of color, vibrancy, and life, Dragon Age Origin's is brown, brown, dark brown, more brown, reddish brown, and a little bit brown for good measure. It has some of the ugliest art direction I've ever seen, and I have yet to come across anything pleasing to my eyeballs. Coupled with the aforementioned bland graphics in general and you have a game that, when it works, I still enjoy immensely many times, but just as quickly hate with passion. It was enough to make me pass on buying DA2... a first for a Bioware game.

Anyone else have games that you KNOW they're great, but for some reason, even as you love playing them, you despise in equal measure?

Any Call of Duty game. I wouldn't call them great myself, but they're very popular and I despise them.

I feel the same way about Oblivion. I understand why people love it, but every time I turn it on 5 min later I want to shut it off.

Excellent thread, Garlador!

Oblivion
An abysmal piece of shit IMHO. Once you'd worked with all of the factions, there was nothing else interesting you could do. I discovered every location, worked with all of the factions to the highest degree, and finished the main quest. I ended up just buying stuff for my houses to fritter away the time. Cities were composed of 30-something people, and the countryside was sparse and dull. All dungeons, caves, and whatnot used the same friggin' layout.
I. Hate. This. Game.
Oblivion cannot hold a candle to Daggerfall, probably one of the best (and buggiest) games of all time, nor can it stand up to Morrowind, which seemed to have limitless possibilities and tons of places to explore. Such a disappointment.

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
Hated it. I was so pissed when I saw the Game Clear screen. I was just waiting for it to go to the 'Save Game' screen, but it didn't. You couldn't restart the game with benefits, so you just had to shut off the GameCube and replay through the dull, unremarkable world from your last save. It actually depresses me to play this game.

Metroid Prime and Metroid Prime 2: Echoes
Horrendous amounts of backtracking, unforgiving enemies, confusing levels, and very repetitive gameplay. These games just look dull. The color seems desaturated, and finding power-ups is a complete bitch because they're frequently hidden in asinine spots. The challenge with this game is you have to keep swapping the goddamn beam you're using, and you need to draw a friggin' map to remember where to backtrack later. It seriously is a nightmare.
I don't know how anybody could enjoy these games.

Resident Evil 4
Not a Resident Evil game. It's simply a mediocre action game with God of War button prompts and swarms of enemies. Had they gone with the original idea (of being in a dark, creepy European castle, alone, chased by a ghostly figure with a scythe), this would have been a great Resident Evil game. But, sadly, it's not. It just plain sucks. I'll probably get tons of flack for this, but I cannot stand this game. This game sets all the sequels up for complete failure, and loss of the survival horror theme.

That's all for now. I'll vent more later! furious

I'd say COD, but that would mean it's a good game, which I can't agree with.

Anyway

Smash bros Brawl
Melee was so much more competitive and fun. And as a Roy/Mewtwo mainer, you know I was thoroughly pissed when the roster leaked.

Street Fighter IV
I find it to be a pretty boring game. I'll admit it's a good fighter, and I'll play if my friend pops it in, but I don't like it. At all.

Gears of War Series:
Just cant get into it. No matter how hard I try.... its that simple. Crap to me

World of Warcraft:
Respect, but no. I refuse. Ive offered my brother $1000 cash to his face to quit and he refused. Tempted but refused.

Resident Evil 4&5:
Im sick of people who came to the series during these two games and claim to be a hardcore fan. Ive argued with hundreds. No more. Dont even bother quoting this because i wont be coming back into this thread. Its simple fact. RE 0,Remake, 2, 3 and CVX are just fucking pure amazing. And I DARE YOU to check out the RE4 beta and tell me it wouldn't have been 100 times better. Despite all that, if they Remade RE2 in teh same fashion they did the original Remake, I would never ask for another game in my life. Perhaps with the gameplay of the RE4 beta... Omg.

FF13:
I struggled to even get 3 hours into this game. Sold it. No chance il ever play it again. I know its Cliche, but 7 and 10 were the best.

Everything after Socom2 in the series:
Easily the best online game I have ever played. If it werent for Code9 and the hacks. I would have never stopped playing. I hope for a PSN HD re-release one day.

Thats all I got for now. lol

The Final Fantasy Series, mainly 13 as of right now.

I watched my friend playing it, and all he was doing was repeatedly hitting the A button (360). He even admitted that after he finished playing the game, the A button would probably be worn out.

I just don't see the fun in it. I also did homework in his dorm as he farmed for 3 hours.

Resident Evil 5
I LOVED Re4, but Re5 was just horrible. It lost all the horror feel it had, and the controls are outdated.

Oblivion...I wasted money on that game after reading all of the reviews but I can' stand it more than a few minutes...Its now being use as a coaster.

The Final Fantasy series from 10 on (not including XI the MMORPG). Maybe because I played all the FF games when they came to states from the first one on the NES, 2 and 3 on Super NES all the PS ones as well. To me it seems that the series peeked at 8 and slowly started to go down by 9 and then just nose dived in 10.

Assassins Creed. I can see how some people love it and it looks fun, but I just can't get into it. So its being used as my guest coaster.

So games that are technically sound but hate them?

Like all of them. I'm a pretty jaded individual. I'll find something wrong with every game I play. But I'll go with some top contenders...

Every Final Fantasy that isn't the first one.
All of these suck. They're all poorly written bishi fests of ineptitude and dumbfuckery. The only reason the first game is any good is because I don't have to play as characters that are as thickheaded as slabs of iron. Considering what an unplayable glitchfest the first Final Fantasy was I'm convinced someone at Square must be sacrificing babies to their devil god in order to keep up funding to continue their charade. Many of these have fun gameplay mechanics and intriguing lore, though.

Halo. All of them. Almost very console FPS ever.
Some of these are pretty well made.

But if they all suddenly disappeared from history the entire FPS genre would be better off.

Some of the most derivative shit I've ever seen trying to tout themselves as the bastion of the genre with "new features" that appeared like 15 fucking years ago in PC games. It's copycats of copycats of copycats.

And fuck your regenerating health shit, you casual cocksuckers. Go play a real fucking game that doesn't hold your hand like the little babies you are.

Pokemon
Has some of the most amazing backend changes with each generation for a deeper gameplay experience but this is probably the single biggest rehash in the history of the genre since they never fucking acknowledge those changes in the games! Five fucking generations and this shit is still on the same primitive cardinal direction grid overworld it had when it was on Game Boy. I just skip the games altogether now and head straight for the online sims to battle other people.

Halo all the way.

I know it's a great series, but I just can't stand first person shooters. I played it once, and it irritated the hell out of me. I like to see [myself] when I play a video game.

I hate mainly shooter games like gow and cod. I also hate games like street fighter and kinda madden
God of War. I understand why people love it but I just hate it with a fiery passion.

And it SHOULD appeal to me I mean Greek Mythology! Violence! Gigantic Ass Bosses! but it just doesn't and even the violence at it's best doesn't shock or even impress me..

I don’t really play games anymore. But the ones I really hate are stupid First person shooters. Whenever I do play I die in like 4 seconds by someone half my age. That’s when I call ass and hand the controller back to my friends. I kind of like DOOM 3 but missed the awesome non stop wave of monsters from DOOM.

However, I really liked Doom 3 resurrection of Evil cause of the Super Shotgun. Plus that monster with a TV for a mouth scarred the shit out of me first time I saw it.
