Yea, this thread has been done to death numerous times on these forums. KI3 is never going to happen, people.

And for that reason we aren't allowed to talk about it?

Former RARE employee sheds some light about Killer Instinct 3..

Are there any Rare games you would like to see as HD remakes on Xbox Live Arcade?

Probably the same game every Rare fan wants to see and that’s KI3 (Killer Instinct 3). We all wanted to make KI3, but Microsoft were more interested on broadening their demographic, than making another fighting game. So it never got made, I doubt it ever will.

People thought Mortal Kombat was doomed to die after MK4, but the franchise is now on its ninth principal game, with critical acclaim.

Also, Marvel vs Capcom 3 and Kid Icarus: Uprising were released 11 and 21 years after their predecessors, respectively.

You just never know.

I don't see how Midway/NRS is comparable to Rare in this case. MK was Midway's flagship franchise and thus the team was always going to be making games as long as Midway stayed afloat. There also wasn't nearly as much downtime as everyone thinks between the end of support for MK4 and the beginning of teasers/development for MKDA. It was two years at the absolute most.

Rare's top dog was always Donkey Kong. By the time KI Gold came out for the N64, they had already put out five DK games between the SNES and Game Boy and were also working on GoldenEye. Not long after that they put out Perfect Dark, DK64, and Banjo-Kazooie, all of which were far more successful than KI. Rare did what made them money. Midway did the only thing that made them money. It's a different situation.

In my humble opinion, MvC3 was garbage, and that's all I have to say about that in terms of the game's quality. Capcom didn't need to make it, especially with the sorry excuse for a roster that the game had. Should've been left on paper.

I can't comment on Kid Icarus other than that nobody that I've ever spoken to asked for another Kid Icarus game.

The bottom line here is that as long as Rare isn't an independent developer, we aren't going to see KI3. And frankly, after KI Gold, I'm not sure why people would want it.

Devil May Cry is a Capcom game series. The new and upcoming Devil May Cry game is made by Ninja Theory who had absolutely no affiliation to Capcom before this.

Midway and Rare were together in creating Killer Instinct, so it is not all that far-fetched that NRS could take over KI and make a new game to the series.

Midway had nothing to do with the development of the game itself. The only hand Midway had in Killer Instinct was helping to create the hardware for the arcade cabinet, which was the first of its kind in that it had a hard disk drive in addition to the game's ROM files, which allowed for better graphics and (obviously) storage.

If NRS wants to get a hold of KI now, good luck buying it from Microsoft, who owns Rare and all of its IPs. Something tells me they aren't going to shell out that coin anytime soon.

The thing is, you don't sound realistic.

You just sound skeptical.

Furthermore, you sound contradicting. Microsoft has no plans to make a third KI, yet they refuse to sell it. And with that said, you still believe no game will be made.

If they apparently do not plan on selling it anytime soon, shouldn't that tell you the series has value to them?

If enough people ask vociferously enough, things get done. Look at Family Guy: after the 3rd series it was cancelled, but people voting with their feet buying the DVDs was enough to convince the network people to give the FG team another chance for more shows - and it paid off big. If enough of us want KI reinstated (and i think we do) we need to get the message to those in the powerful decision-making positions.

Having a fair amount of people asking or having some random petition going around can work for certain things, but not every thing.

But, looking in the past and finding my former, cyan writing self, I must bring this up because since this topic is still being discussed and there's new users who are on this site, let me bring it back up:

Do you want another company developing this game?

I also made references to Tomb Raider, Spyro, and Crash. Three games all guilty of having different developers making their game and TRASHING them with bogus new touch ups and different atmosphere that made the series either go through various reboots, or turn the characters into something that they never were in their previous games that made them who they were.

I fucking hate her.

Uh, no. It tells me that they don't think anything of it regardless. If it had value to them they'd either be telling Rare to make another game or they'd be trying to sell it. Doing nothing tells me that they don't give two shits either way.

If they didn't feel it had value, they'd terminate the series, much like how Warner Bros. terminate every Midway asset except for Mortal Kombat.

Keeping something you neither want nor need is pointless and seriously stupid.

Well, pretty much every non-MK Midway asset was worthless, except for NFL Blitz (picked up by EA) and possibly Gauntlet (currently owned by either WB or Atari).

I'm sorry, but if KI meant anything to Microsoft at all after ten years of owning Rare, don't you think they would have done something with it by now? You don't think they would have tried to sell it off or put out a new game? These aren't even rhetorical questions, I actually do wonder what your response would be. You can terminate a franchise without actually saying so, this IS M$ we're talking about here. KI isn't even a blip on their radar.

Since you make it sound like you have to be told when something is happening, I'll take that liberty; KI is dead and gone. Microsoft doesn't care enough to tell Rare to make another one and no other developer cares to try and buy it.

You speak for the company, I see.

You seem to be someone who believes that something is one way and one way only, and there is no possible alternative.

If that is the case, I recommend a new outlook on thinking. Nothing is set in stone here, and I've learned from experience that assuming something is absolute is never a good thing.

Killer Instinct was fun but I don't really care for a KI3. I never really liked any of the characters or the story. But it was a fun game.

But I highly doubt a KI3 will ever be in the cards. I'd rather see a Conker's Bad Fur Day reboot. Hell even a Primal Rage reboot sounds better to me.

Ignoring moseph and moving on with this thread...

I still think NRS could do a good job with the KI series. But how would YOU guys want it to be like?

My opinion:
- I would want it to be 2.5D, 3D graphics with 2D gameplay, just like the new MK.
- It would focus on its combo system, like its predecessors, combining special moves together in strings, some special moves can be used to start combos, some can be used to string the combo along and some special moves are used as combo finishers.
- There will be finishers, like fatalities. One that can be used just like a fatality at the end of the fight, a finisher that can be used to finish off a combo, a super extra long brutal combo finisher (ULTRA COMBO!) and so on and so forth.
- Beautiful stages with Stage Finishers and maybe multi-platform stages as well.
- A storyline that fits with the rest of the canon story.
- A complete and interesting roster with varied characters (though they already have that).
- Several interesting modes.
- NO Tag Team combat!

I am personally kinda bored to see all the games with tag team combat that's out there and I have never seen it as something fitting Killer Instinct.

That article didn't confirm anything.

In fact, with the entire interview, KI3 was only discussed in one short answer, which only stated the guy's doubts.

It's like the only thing you read was the headline!

I see I can't have this discussion with you anymore, as I can no longer take what you say seriously.

I don't see what's so hard about accepting the highly likely possibility that this game never gets made. Microsoft doesn't want another KI game, they own Rare, and nobody is stepping up to the plate to buy either KI or Rare. It's really that simple.

"I doubt it ever will" coming straight from the horse's mouth. Pretty damning to me, but I guess you don't see it that way. I'd be willing to bet that a large majority of the other Rare employees feel the same way.

Then again, far be it from this community to listen to different viewpoints, let alone reason.

I get what you are trying to say. The game has little to no chance to be revived. Alright... and so what? Does that mean we can't chat about it? Does that mean we can't hope and dream? Does that mean you have to ruin the mood in here?

The thing is though, it's not even as if Microsoft has made it official that the series has been abandoned.

And with what seems to be a new rise in the fighting genre's popularity, I do feel the odds of KI3 being made will increase soon, even if slightly.

It's been a hell of a long time since there has been a release in the series, and there ain't been a word on it from Microsoft, but I am not one to make assumptions.

Let the dreaming commence! Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz sleep
