Aquaman

Aquaman has multiple abilities, several of which derive from his aquatic physiology. His amphibious lungs allow him to breathe air or water. He can withstand the pressure and cold of the depths which also provides him high durability and super strength out of the water. For instance, he can easily throw a car hundreds of yards without much strain. He is a very fast swimmer which also translates to a high running speed on land. He is able to swim through the ocean at unmatched speeds, so fast that he can create a small tidal wave if the need arises. Arthur has been shown with the ability to throw water with the concussive force of a tidal wave, as well as leaping several stories at a time, either from land or water. He has enhanced senses due to his physiology as well. He can see in near total darkness and has super hearing. Aquaman's touch can also have a dehydrating effect, a consequence of how his body normally absorbs water while in the oceans. Outside of water, Aquaman will gradually dehydrate and his physical abilities and energy will waver in response.

Arthur's most well-known power is his ability to communicate with sea life, which is actually telepathy. His range is unknown since he can summon sea life from undisclosed distances. Psychic battles he's had have reverberated around the world so it is possible that his range is worldwide. Though most often used on sea life, Aquaman has shown the capacity to telepathically affect anything that evolved from marine life including humans and Martians. His telepathy is fairly powerful, at one point helping Martian Manhunter tap into the minds of everyone on the planet. By locating that part of the human brain that mankind shares with its marine ancestors, Aquaman can also disrupt some normal brain functions (walking, speech, etc.) with a seizure. Further, it should be noted that he does not ordinarily mentally control sea life into helping him. When he commands, most help out of respect for Aquaman, while others can also be persuaded or bargained with. Some animals, like piranha will not obey him at all due to their non-social nature.

After the loss of his hand, Aquaman replaced it with a cybernetic harpoon (often mistakenly called a hook) that responded to his thoughts. The harpoon could be fired and stay attached to Aquaman via a long line. At times, Aquaman would replace it with a normal looking cybernetic hand. Later, the harpoon would be replaced by the Waterbearer hand given to him by the Lady of the Lake. The hand was magical in nature and possessed various abilities. Aquaman could control its density, making it very hard. If Aquaman uses the hand in a negative way, it releases the Thirst. Instead he primarily used it to heal as well as cancel magic spells.

Namor

Because of his unusual genetic heritage, Namor is unique among both ordinary humans and Atlanteans; he is sometimes referred to as "Marvel's first mutant," because, while the majority of his observed superhuman powers come from the fact that he's a hybrid of Human and Atlantean DNA, his ability to fly can't be explained by either side. (Atlanteans are an off-shoot of "baseline" humanity.)

Bill Everett, in his first Sub-Mariner story, described the character as "an ultra-man of the deep [who] lives on land and in the sea, flies in the air, [and] has the strength of a thousand [surface] men". No other powers were mentioned. When the series was revived in 1954, Namor lost his ankle wings and with them the power of flight; they, and his full strength, were restored in Sub-Mariner #38 (Feb. 1955), in which Everett additionally wrote a flashback story, "Wings on His Feet", detailing their appearance on Namor at age 14. This story was twice reprinted during the Silver Age of Comic Books, in Marvel Super-Heroes #17 (Nov. 1968), and in the book Comix by Les Daniels.

After he was revived yet again in the 1960s by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, Namor demonstrated powers that had not been shown in earlier stories. In The Fantastic Four #9 (Dec. 1962), he states, "I have the powers of all the creatures who live beneath the sea! I can charge the very air with electricity — using the power of the electric eel!" In the same issue, "the radar sense of the cave fish from the lowest depths of the sea" enables him to sense the presence of Sue Storm when she is invisible. He uses "the power to surround himself with electricity in the manner of an electric eel" again in Strange Tales #107 (April 1963), and #125 (Oct. 1964); in the former he as well manifests the power to inflate his body like a puffer fish. These extra powers were ignored, however, when Marvel gave Namor his own feature beginning in Tales To Astonish #70 (Aug. 1965).

An editorial note in Marvel Tales #9 (July 1967), which reprinted the story from Strange Tales #107, stated explicitly that "nautical Namor has since lost his power to imitate the characteristics of fish...."

In all his incarnations, Namor possesses superhuman strength and is the strongest Atlantean ever known. The exact level of his strength is dependent upon his physical contact with water, in which he needn't be submerged. His strength diminishes slowly the longer he is out of contact with water, though an extended period on land does not result in his death, as it would for a typical Atlantean. Namor also possesses superhuman stamina and resistance to injury due to his hybrid nature. Namor's strength level is such that he has held his own in hand to hand combat with beings as powerful as the Hulk in the past.

Some stories have mentioned that Namor has gills for breathing underwater,[2] and artists such as Salvador LaRocca have drawn him with gill slits on either side of his neck.[3] In The Sub-Mariner vol. 1 #18-22 (1969-70), beings from outer space surgically closed Namor's gills for a time, leaving him with the ability to breathe air but unable to breathe underwater.

Namor also possesses wings on his ankles (often wrongly described as "vestigial wings"). They are depicted as giving him the aerodynamic ability to fly, as implausible as this may appear, and his flight is directly related to the presence of the wings, as evidenced by his loss of flying ability on occasions when they have been lost or badly damaged. He could not fly as a child, and the power only manifested itself when the wings developed in adolescence. Rarely, these ankle-wings have been referred to as fins but they are always illustrated as wings.

Another ability unknown in the Golden Age and rarely displayed is his telepathic rapport with many forms of marine life.

Namor has greater longevity than a normal human being. He is well over 80 years old as he was born in 1920 in Marvel timeline, but has the appearance of a male in his prime. His identity as a pre-WWII super-hero is well-established, making him less subject to the sliding timescale of the Marvel universe

Ignoring the farce that we shall not speak of, this one is Namor's without any explanation necessary.

Aquaman, despite the occasional shakey tweak here and there, just isn't in Namor's league. You want to talk about dramatically resonating match-ups, you definitely go to a Black Adam for a worthy foe for Namor. (And possibly a worthy better).
Black Adam's topical! glasses

Or if you want to to combine the two themes, bring Aquaman and pointy ears together for some Amazo action. Yeah!

But yes: Namor makes chouder of Aquaman.

You know what the first line in the Sub-Mariner cartoon theme is?
"Stronger than a whale..."
Get fucked, Aquaman! tongue

I think people underestimate Aquaman in general over the years even though I'm not too fond that much.He is "The king of the sea" is for a reason.

It would be close with Namor but I think I'll roll with AC/Aquaman.

Apart from Kingjolly, who's being a comic-stealing prick (tongue), do any of you actually have a reason for thinking Aquaman could come close to beating the Sub-Mariner?

There's only -one- argument I can think of that brings Aquaman even into the stadium with the Sub-Mariner, and strangely enough it's one I never see people bring up: -- Aquaman has telepathic abilities and control marine life with them.

Namor's a half-human mutant, but presumably in the magic land of broad strokes, Aquaman can at least attempt to influence Namor.
Of course, in his plethora of powers (canonical or otherwise), Namor's mind is right up there. Not because he has any innate special mind based powers, but because he's incredibly strong-willed.

Aquaman's low level telepathy would be entirely ineffective, but all other things considered, it's the only realm of possibility where you could concoct a potential victory for Aquaman.
Even the farcical instance in Marvel vs DC is frought with improbability, because as I alluded to with the cartoon theme, a whale really isn't going to make the Sub-Mariner sneeze. This guy rumbles and bitch slaps the Hulk from time to time.

So, to the uninformed masses I decree: You are wrong.
You may now again go about your business with the bliss of ignorance!

I don't know what kingjolly wrote, but changes to the character have been fairly minor. As far as his abilities go, the only notable changes have been the stripping of some of the less relevant and silly powers.

Ie; He isn't generally recognised to have the electric charge of an eel, or the inflatable qualities of a puffer fish anymore.
Otherwise he's still the high-flying, super-strong, crazy eyed ruler of the sea.

mkflegend Wrote:

He's the Atlantean ruler for the same reason Namor is. Birthright.
The only difference is Namor can single handedly fight off any army that tries to overthrow him.

There's a shakey question mark over whether or not Aquaman has super-strength (re; the crushing depths of the sea, and his residence there), but even at it's best it doesn't enter the realm of Namor's.

Likewise, while both are cunning and competent rulers, Namor and his kingdom have always been the more imposing.

Namor came first, too.
Stupid orange poser!

Aquaman can control fish, and still had his hand eaten by pirhanas.
Unfortunately you are wrong.

Class dismissed.

You are apparently completely unaware of the strength levels involved.
That whale is going right back to it's master in a matter of seconds. A master who does not have the strength to lift a whale.

Round 12:

Supergirl

Supergirl

Like all Kryptonians under a yellow sun, the current version of Kara Zor-El possesses vast super strength, speed & stamina; various extra sensory and vision powers (including super hearing, x-ray vision, telescopic vision, microscopic vision, and heat vision); tremendous lung capacity and super breath (wind and ice); invulnerability and flight. Continued exposure to a yellow sun will cause the level of her abilities to slowly increase. Many characters in the DC Universe have noted that Kara appears at times to be even more powerful than Superman. However, as Superman himself explains, this is because he has spent a lifetime trying to hold back so that he doesn't hurt the people around him, while Kara, without such experience, simply uses her powers to the fullest without being as fearful of risks to others as yet. Due to experiments performed by her father, this version of Supergirl has had a small amount of sunstones implanted in her body.

The present day Kara is a capable fighter having trained with the amazons. Kara is also somewhat capable as an actress, or in disguise, since she has so far managed to play the roles of Flamebird, a high schoolgirl, a villianess, an innocent young girl/super fighter, and (briefly) a biker babe.

She-Hulk

In her She-Hulk form, Jennifer possesses superhuman strength. When she transforms back and forth, she gains/loses considerable mass (much of it muscle). Unlike her cousin, her personality and intelligence are less affected when she transforms into the She-Hulk, although she becomes more self-confident and assertive.

As She-Hulk, Walters is proportionally stronger than she is in her Jennifer Walters form. This means that any extra strength gained as Jennifer Walters through intense physical training will be amplified, making her She-Hulk form exponentially stronger. She used this exponential strength and training to her advantage when she fought the Champion of the Universe on an alien world (where court cases were decided through boxing matches). While Jennifer Walters' training resulted in her becoming a bit more toned, She-Hulk's musculature, in contrast, became much more pronounced. As a result, she donned a special strength-controlling bodysuit to replace her business clothes, which no longer fit her frame. Walters subsequently shed some of that muscle mass during a work hiatus, but since first becoming She-Hulk, her strength has increased. During the Avengers story arc "The Search For She-Hulk", it was established that fear increases her strength. However, her strength does not reach the Hulk's rage-enhanced levels. The She-Hulk is impervious to extreme levels of injury, pain and disease: her skin can withstand extremes of temperature, as well as tremendous stresses and impacts without puncture wounds or lacerations. Her enhanced physiology renders her immune to all terrestrial diseases.

Thanks to training by the Ovoid alien race, She-Hulk can exchange her physical characteristics and powers with the physical characteristics and powers of another being by simply focusing on a mental image of the person and willing the transfer to take place. The actual intent of the Ovoid skill is to exchange the minds of the user and another being, but it was theorized by the Ovoid who trained the She-Hulk that some factor of her gamma-mutated physiology causes her use of this talent to manifest in a different way. She rarely uses this power; unless she initiates this exchange with another superhuman being, she will become basically human in ability, but still green-skinned and generally recognizable as She-Hulk, and thus vulnerable to attack (a fact that the super-villainess Titania took advantage of the one time She-Hulk did use this ability).

She-Hulk's legal practice requires her to spend extended periods of time as Jennifer Walters. The Scarlet Witch cast a spell for her which rendered anyone intending to harm the She-Hulk incapable of recognizing her as Jennifer Walters. However, the spell actually rendered Jennifer Walters completely undetectable to these individuals. While this had its advantages, it also left Jennifer unable to communicate with certain people whose knowledge or information it was vital for her to acquire. The spell was eventually removed by Dr. Stephen Strange, the Sorcerer Supreme of the Marvel Universe.

She-Hulk is a formidable hand-to-hand combatant, having been trained by Captain America and Gamora. Even in her Jennifer Walters form, she possesses sufficient skill in the martial arts to dispatch several would-be muggers much larger than she is.

Jennifer Walters is a skilled pilot, as has been shown in multiple issues of Avengers and Fantastic Four.

Extremely intelligent, She-Hulk is a skilled and experienced attorney. In spite of the character's party-girl image, she is a bona fide intellectual, being one of the few superheroines to have attained an advanced post-baccalaureate degree. Jennifer attended UCLA School of Law, where she was a member of the Order of the Coif, a national merit society for top legal scholars. It is revealed in the Savage She-Hulk that Walters has also attended Harvard Law School; though details are not provided, it is probable that she earned a master of laws (LL.M.) degree at Harvard to complement her juris doctor (J.D.) degree from UCLA. She has shown great versatility in her legal practice, representing criminal defendants, corporations, and even domestic violence victims.

She-Hulk is not above using her looks and sex appeal to her tactical advantage in a fight; she did so against a then-single Hawkeye during a conflict in their early appearances together in Avengers. It is revealed in She-Hulk #100/#3 that she once distracted and destroyed a cadre of alien villains by staging a wardrobe malfunction. In that issue, court testimony also reveals that her breasts are the largest of any heroine in the Marvel Universe.

In addition to her considerable strengths, She-Hulk does have a habit of appearing late for appointments — such as on the splash page of Avengers Unplugged #4 (April 1996). Due to lateness she missed the opportunity to appear on the David Letterman talk show with the other Avengers (Avengers #239).

As much as i love Marvel, i know better than to give this to she hulk. Supergirl outpowers she hulk by alot. It would take some of Marvels stronger characters to bring down a "Super".

Supergirl wins.

I want to see a real powerhouse fight, like a full powerd galactus versus superman prime, or the spectre versus living tribunal. Always interested in reading the reasonings. Edit: kingjolly brings up a good point. If it is regular she hulk, then supergirl, but if she hulk can do the mental imitation powers, then i am not sure.
