Since it's a team format, it's hard to say who I'm going to main. I could just pick my favorite characters, but if I'm going to play competitively, I'm going to need decent assists. Therefore, there's no guarantee my favorites are going to gel together. I guess the best way to answer your question is to prioritize the characters. These are in order of likability, even in the last section.

I'm sure some peeps will find my list a little suspect, so allow me to preempt some of their questions.

You mean you're not going to get proficient with ALL the characters? Only 9? That's being kinda close-minded, Temp.

No, it's being reasonable. There are only so many hours in the day. Nine is a hell of an ambitious number if you ask me. I'm not even proficient with 9 people in SSF4. Remember, being proficient doesn't just involve memorizing moves and combos. Real proficiency comes from months and months of online play. I just can't do that with every character, ESPECIALLY with MK2011 on the horizon.

Why is Ryu so high on your list? Hasn't he been bottom tier in the recent builds?

Yes, he has, but it's possible they gave him some buffs since then. It's been said that Ryu is structured like his SSF4 counterpart, so Street Fighter vets may see some of their old skill translate. Perhaps that won't be the final case, but it's an interesting idea, especially since Ryu is my counter-pick in SSF4.

Why not just go with Akuma?

As you saw on the list, that's not impossible, but I already have a lot of low-stamina characters as my favorites. I've never had the execution skills to be great with Akuma anyway. Lots of love for what Capcom did for him, though. He looks amazing.

Why the fuck is Dante not in the top section of your list?

Ask me this again February 17 after you've just fought legion upon legion of Dante players online. Honestly, if I played through the DMC games and had a special attachment to him, I'd ignore this problem. As you've guessed, I haven't. Granted, I will learn him to an extent for match up experience.

What's your beef with Jill?

Only the fact that she's an icon of the Resident Evil series yet they gave her a design that was only relevant for HALF A GAME!!! The fuck, Capcom! You know that model of Jill of the front cover of RE5 Gold edition? Yeah, no one wanted to see THAT version of her. Stupid fucking... ugh.

But even if your ideal characters do work well together, you are going to use other teams, right?

With a game like this, I don't think counter-picking is all that important, but obviously I will use more characters anyway just because they're so many great ones in the game. If Psylocke is DLC, I'm going to have to knock off Ammy anyway.

Although it doesn't ruin the game for me, I'm disappointed they choose to put in Sentinel/s and Phoenix. Now there are too many x-men characters.

If you wanted to put in a big robot character for the marvel side, why not go with the crimson dynamo to leech off Iron-mans current fame. Or better yet, Ultron, one of the biggest threats in the Marvel world. I can understand it would be easier to introduce a character that has already been in the series but still... The Sentinels remind me too much of the old x-men cartoons.

As for Phoenix... Adding a cosmic character really questions the balance of game play. Nobody should be able to defeat her, but because it's a fighting game, everyone has the potential. On a personal note, I really hate Jean and all incantations of her. Would have preferred Emma Frost for an x-girl. Or the Sentry if you wanted to add just a ridiculously over powered character, the Sentry.

Oh well, adding the Taskmaster makes up for a lot.

Funny you say that. In the archive stream, I just saw Phoenix get killed in one combo. Capcom gave her ridiculously low stamina to balance out her cosmic abilities.

On another note, I find it a little hilarious that someone named Mango doesn't like Sentinel. Nothing wrong with that. He certainly wasn't my choice.

Rayden's a God and he's been beatable in MK games since the first one, what's wrong with having Phoenix? It's a wacky fighting game, who cares about realistic points like those? Servbot could beat Thanatos in Marvel vs Capcom 2.

No, you don't suck, but Cyclops doesn't have much to contribute as is. He plays like a shoto, which was fine in "Childen of the Atom," but not so much now. They would have to restructure his moveset from the bottom up.

Of course, anyone could be given new moves, so the above argument only goes so far, but that means Cyclops has to be earn his spot purely on design and story. I don't think he's going to win that battle.

You know I'm not a big Mega Man fan, hell I barely played any of the games, but I still find it bizarre that Capcom would leave out one of their biggest mascots. Its like not having Link in a Smash Bros. game. Just astonishing that they would leave him out.

Also, I found this gem of a quote from eventhubs:

"When you look at characters like Ghost Rider, and Iron Fist, and Black Panther, those are great characters but it's the backstory that makes them. From a gameplay point of view they're all just punchy dudes. We didn't want you to be able to say, 'this guy is just another one of this guy but a little faster or with a different fireball'. So that was the final pass" that Capcom took off the Marvel list.

Okay, so Iron Fist and Black Panther I sort of understand. But describing Ghost Rider as a punchy dude? That's the reason he wasn't put in? What!? So why the fuck is She Hulk in? She's just Hulk in girl form! And Ghost Rider has his chains and hellfire and motorcycle and flaming skull and all that shit. Bah

I love some of the choices on Capcom's side (Dante, VJoe, Ammy, Arthur, Haggar, hell even C. Viper looks like a blast) but why in God's name were Tron Bonne, Spencer, and Felicia added? The first one is the most blasphemous of all. You add Tron Bonne in over Mega Man? What? And Spencer? I'm fine with obscure characters, but Spencer? There was no one else in Capcom's library of characters to add in over that Bionic Commando doucher?

How about Rathalos from Monster Hunter? Or bring back Strider, or CapCom, or hey how about the Blue Bomber? Or an Onimusha rep? Red Earth, Rival Schools and Power Stone get nothing, but this guy is in?

I'm fine with three Darkstalkers reps. Hsien Ko looks fun and Morrigan is a classic vs. character. But why is Felicia in? Talbain, Jedah, Donovan and Demitri could have easily replaced her and would've been far more interesting to play as.

Here's another big name missing from Capcom's side. Phoenix motherfucking Wright. Need I say more?

X23, She Hulk and MODOK are in this game. Cyclops, Daredevil, and Elektra are not. Sentinel returns, but Venom doesn't. Remember all of those dream rosters people used to write back when MvC3 was just a fantasy? How many people had MODOK on it?

MvC2 had a pretty crappy roster, but that was because Capcom recycled most of their sprites. That's not an excuse this time. They majorly fucked up this roster. While there are a couple of characters that I'm dying to play as (Deadpool, Dante, Wesker and more) I'm just so disappointed. This roster could have had everything fans wanted with some wtf characters thrown in for good measure, but instead for every Wesker we have, there's a MODOK.

Oh well, I'm still paying sixty bucks for it. As bad as the roster is, the gameplay looks jaw dropping. gg Capcom. You can shit in a box and I'd still throw money at you =\

I believe Mega Man was in the game at some point in development. Niitsuma says he was omitted because he has too few original moves (which, let's face it, is kinda true), but I think the real story as that he was in for a while, but they got a flood of requests for Mega Man X and thought, "Hey, the fans don't really want classic Mega Man, WE don't really want classic Mega Man, so let's just ditch the version we have now and give the fans Mega Man X as DLC."

I'm almost positive this is what has and will happen. If I'm wrong, well, all I gotta say is: better Mega Man than Zero. Sorry, peeps. Zero is simply the deeper, more interesting, and better-designed character.

What the hell is a "punchy character" anyway? If Seth wanted to give a better explanation, he should have said there were too many fire characters in the game as is. With Phoenix, Dormammu, and Super Skrull, Ghost Rider might have been a little redundant. Maybe this is also a bullshit explanation, but it's certainly a better bullshit explanation.


Capcom is jump starting the Mega Man Legends series. That's really all there is to it. She's simply in for promotional purposes and possibly to save development time.

Surprisingly, I've come around on this one. Originally I didn't like his inclusion, but me and my friends have been making hentai jokes about him non-stop since he was announced and it's been barrels of fun.

And because she was one of the most interesting and fun characters in MvC2. Off the bat: Tron just has more potential than MegaMan. The only characters I can honestly see as indefensible are X-23 and Shulk. People Complaining about Trish or someone like that being in over their personal favorite--big fanbase or not--just doesn't really seem to hold any water to me.

I see why ppl are not happy w X-23 and She-Hulk... but I gotta say, I actually like what they did w them.

I also love that they brought in MODOK, and gave him really cool gameplay.

My main beef w the roster is the re-used characters! I made my hate towards Sentinel obvious already (come on! he ́s not even a bona-fide character!!!) and Felicia, although I like her.. has been overplayed 10000 times. Give the girl a rest! she ́s not that fun to play as!!!

Tron Bonne has her solid fanbase...but she had her time in the light... she could have been spared! Same applies to Sentinel.

Morrigan, Iron Man, Ryu, and Wolverine are staples so I ́ll allow them. Storm and Magneto also have HUGE fanbases... but these 2, with the versatility of their powers... could have afforded a s,ightly more innovative gameplay! granted Storm has a new super... but still-

I gotta say, I would have preferred it if Hulk was cut and replaced w She-Hulk... Hulk has gotten his time in the light... really... there are other bulk characters out there... I understand he ́s a strong character... but I really would have prefered if he had stayed out. Same kind of goes for Wolverine... but of course thats not gonna happen.

Regarding the Marvel Knights, Ghost Rider included... I gotta say Im glad they ́ve been kept out. Dont want too many brawlers, GR does have some interesting powers... but i just plain dont like him! so im glad he ́s out hahaha
Seriously, in TvsCapcom there where so many Sentai characters... that in the end many of them blended toghether... It ́s good they are exploiting the variety of characters in the Marvel U. w the likes of MODOK
