akira toriyama wanted to end the manga after goku KILLED frieza, but the company wanted more, so he brought frieza back and so on and so forth until the end of the buu saga. the ENTIRE SERIES is canon. GT isn't, thank baby fucking christ

FACT: Akira Toriyama intended to close down the Dragonball storyline after the Freeza saga. However contract and peer pressure led him into continuancy of the series.

FACT: Akira wanted to write off Goku and have Gohan take over the role of protagonist. However...

FACT: again, popularity demanded that Goku would continue as the protagonist. Akira did the Cell and Boo saga and wante to finalize the series. Akira wrote the rest as CANONICAL.

SEMANTICAL RULE: the canon is always the accepted existing, I repeat, THE EXISTING text. NOT the WHAT WOULD HAVE BEEN!

FACT: contract and shitloads of money convinced Akira to continue the licensing. GT however has made a twist, the reduced Goku to dumbfuck child mode, since the continuancy would have been turned to shit. Compromise.

Hao, your argument is flawed in the beginning. You are talking about the original intentions NOT the canon material. Besides Akira has moved onward after Dragon Quest, and I am pretty sure he has finished with DB, and DBZ and DBGT...

Not that I'm saying anyone is necessarily wrong, but it's always a little presumptuous to speak in certain terms about what a writer's intentions were. Especially on the basis of a lot of second, third, fourth, and fifth-hand information.

A lot of people love to talk about what was supposed to happen, but without going through the entirety of this thread, I'm not sure I've ever seen any quotes or material where Toriyama has flatout expressed dismay about his continued association with DBZ.

One tends to wonder if this isn't second-hand exaggerations, and fan disapproval of the cyclical sequels that followed.

Honestly, m0s3ph, I think mostly ANYONE can get into any anime series if they watched from beginning to end and paid attention.

Of the anime shows that I have seen ANY of (Dragonball, DBZ, Bleach, Naruto, Pokemon, Full Metal Alchemist, the list goes on), none have caught my interest. It's just not my cup of tea.

AKIRA! The manga, is awsome and I mean the manga by that name, read that and rest with the dbz fanboism. Everyone knows DBZ was the same shit over and over with just different names. The original was good because it was funny, not because it was action packed...

Action packed and good are Akira, Saint Seiya(during the 12 houses saga and the Hades saga... the rest... we could ́ve maybe done without), Samourai Champloo and Cowboy Beboop. There are many more, but these are easy to come by.

I consider any of Hayao Miyazaki's works (or any of Studio Ghibli's, for that matter) to be infinitely more fulfilling than Dragonball Z.

Hell, I prefer Dragonball to DBZ...at least there was the element of adventure and not, fightfightfight, win, new enemy appears, take time to train, fightfightfight, rinse/repeat.

For the record, however, there is one SPECTACULAR episode of DBZ that brings in the love from the original Dragonball:

The episode when Goku and Piccolo go to driving school...

Led to suicides. And it declined anyway.

Actually, watching DBZ from beginning to end is what made me loathe it.
