3D Motaro colored WIP

Finally got around to coloring this model.

I'm learning as I go with this, because I never texture my 3D models.



So far, this is just the color map with a basic material.



I'm gonna try and make this as good as possible, and that includes these things.

color map

Bump map

specularity map

Special shaders / materials

That should make him look pretty realistic.

Then for animation, I'm planning on doing a low polygon version of this guy, then using the high resolution mesh for the Normal map.


For those that don't know, Normal mapping is the big thing for next gen games.

It let's you transfer detail from a high polygon model to a very low polygon model. Making the low polygon model look almost the same as the high polygon model.

It's like a more advanced bump mapping system.

so yeah...


I'll post updates as I go, if anybody wants to see them.

About the design

I'm not sure if I'm going to make the tail metallic like in the game.

I was thinking of giving him some kind of armor.

I'll do his main separately.









He looks blocky like that and with the low resolution texture, because I'm working in Zbrush and that's just how models look in that program.

Later on I'll transfer it to 3D studio max and it'll look smooth.

5/5 I really think it looks great, maybe you could make a kenshi model when you have the time.

I have a friend that keeps on making 3D models and i can tell that took a lot of skill and work. I like the texture on the back, the tail looks to stiff but i think this was to permit a better view of all his details.
The tail is like that, so I can have an easier time texturing and rigging it for animation. It's the same reason his arms are sticking out to the sides.

Forgive my use of profanity, bleed, but: you ****ing ROCK! This looks even better than ever. And it looked good a long time ago.

Still, the people commenting about the tail were pretty funny.
It's sad knowing that the model of Motaro in Armageddon won't look anywhere near this good.

Its looking better than ever. It's great that you textured it, it looks fantastic. I can't wait till it's fully finished. You could put the finished model in the Soul Chamber since you made that face. That was orgasmic. This is heart-attack worthy. You bastard and your skills. grin

are you planing to make more MK characters in 3D? if so can you tell us what the next character is?
I'd like to make more MK characters, but with my own design.

I'm not going to get a head of my self though....

One thing at a time, or else I don't finish anything.

Here is one character I came up with for MK, It was meant to be fujin, but he looks too heavy. He could be better as Hotaru, or a new fighter.





And the soul chamber face.

This looks really wonderful. Man. Can't wait to see the model textured better. Already it looks better than what the MK team has for him I'm sure. What do you plan to use him for?
To put him on my demoreel, so I can hopefully get a job at Midway and work on Mortal Kombat games making 3D characters, concept art, etc.

I've already spoken with an art director at Midway games. He says I have talent, but my work needs to be at their level in order for me to join the team.

I'm trying to make something that matches what they do, so I can have a chance at getting hired.

I"ve been to the Midway office building before. Once they gave me an art test and saw some talent, so they invited me to visit the team. It was the people that worked on Psi Ops, not the MK team.

I think theyre really just scared of your talent. In this humble geek's opinion you've already proven time and time again that your work is more professional and creative than the MK team's work.
But you're very wise in trying to do stuff that matches their style. You could be the most proficient 3D artist in the world but if they dont like your style they wont want to hire you.
I hope and pray that you can find satisfying work somewhere in the gaming world, because your talents and work ethic is something that would be a definite asset to any company willing to take you on.

I'm still deeply in love with your Motaro. Nothing will ever change that <3

Screw them! your work is awsome! btw, wat 3d modeling program do you use?
I make the base mesh in 3D studio Max, which would be like that DR. Faustus head I posted before.

I then take it in to Zbrush and add high detail.
Zbrush modeling is a lot like painting in Photoshop using the air brush.

It let's you go high enough with detail to make pores in the skin.

My computer can't handle that much memory though.

I use Zbrush and Photoshop for texturing. They work as one program using a plugin for zbrush.

Nothing else, I had some questions but as I read everything here I understand the the looks of everything. I'd love to see what kind of Armour you put on Motaro.
