This is a thread meant as a source for information on animation and sprite manipulation. Hopefully, people can come here and ask questions and recieve answers on either Animation or Sprite manipulation subjects.
Here's what I got for animation stuff
Animation
I have Ulead Gif Animator: I've had the program for a while now, I just recently started fooling around with the thing. Here are some examples of what I've done with it, and what It looks like.
(a) Raiden
(b) Scarface
(c) A Signature I did for QueenSindel(TheBitch) This one was my second animation attempt...
(d) Ulead GiF Animator Screen Shot
My questions here are:
1.) Anybody got any tips on this program? In particular, It seems image quality worsens when you upload the animations. I've been able to remedy this somewhat, but it's still not to the extent I want it to be. If you look close enough at the split-screen, you can tell in the screenshot I provided above.
2.) What are better programs? System requirements or anything funny like that? Cost/Free?
3) Best ways to animate images in general that you've found?
I mention that some of this work gets teedious, are the better procedures? Tutorials you know about?
I've found that making the surroundings, background, and whatever else in my animation first - is the way to go, then input the images I wanna animate later. Problem with this is that it makes "editing" teedious if needed. "Frame by frame" if you know what I mean. I like animating, but a more fluid process wouldn't hurt.
3.) Anything else?
[fyi] Ulead GiF Animator came with one of my image editor programs "PhotoImpact10". I also have PsCs2(use it) and
Gimp(don't use it, got it a long time ago)....

Sprite Manipulation
Seems like they go hand in hand when you wanna make something unique and interesting... and then animate it, so it's in here too. I thought I was crazy for even playing around with maniplating sprites until I asked around a bit and found other people were already doing it long before me. lol
Anyway, here's an example or two of "maniplated" Raiden sprites I've been toying around with..
(a)

(b) Raiden Sprites in motion. Most are "original"sprites from the MkWarhouse..
My Questions are:
1.) What's some simple sprite editing tecniques you use? Pixel editing, or just "paint"?.
I pretty much pixel edit, they just come out better for me rather than to just pick a color and paint all over the thing. Seems quite nessasary anyway.
2.) Anything else pertaining to topic..
Thanx for any input

Oh thanks man, but I'm kinda looking for knowlege of animation//sprite manipulation more than crit. That's my fault, maybe I'll edit the first post to be more clear.

Pred to answer one of your questions Adobe After Effects is the better program and one of the best imo. This is what I use to make some of my Gifs. After Effects isnt made for just GIFS you can do alot of other shit with it to. Its mostly used for video editing and ect. Its a really advanced program, almost waay to advanced for me. But I know the basics.
The only problem I have with it is when Im done with my GIFS and I save it, the quality changes and it ends up looking nasty. Ive tried to fiddle around with some of the options there and see if anything will change the quality for the better but no luck as if yet. Here is one that I made awhile ago that turned out rather well, you steal it you die lol.
Im still in the learning process. I just like to get as much practice and make random things and mess around with the many options it has. I have a few more that I will show as examples as soon as I find them and ill show you guys ones that came out looking like crap and the good ones.
Also Pred this is a very expensive program. But there are other ways........
Seeing as how your more advanced than me Pred, id say this would be a good program for you. Especially if you want to take your animations to a higher and better level. Im sure tho that there are many great programs to use aswell, including the one you use.
Ill post more info later if you guys would like. Also if any one has any info on making GIFS come out with good quality, id like to know.

Tbh, if it's just GIFS you're after Ulead is one of the best out there - along with the ones that come with photoshop/psp (Image Ready is particularly good as it can work alongside photoshop)..
AfterEffects is great, though I'd never use it for GIF's, purely because it's use is FAR higher up the chain.
As for your quality issue: an animated GIF uses 256 colours. That's its limit on the web. So, while it may look good in Ulead, when you export it, it has to be compressed down to 256 colours - and particularly with that ScarFace one where you've embedded a video, it'd have to shred the quality to be able to export it.

Well, I would like to be capable of making decent sized fan vids at some point too. So that's good news. Maybe even take content such as this Raiden Test and use it in anything I want. Problem with that particular issue is, I don't know where else to find that on the web other than that YouTube link, and I don't know how to get it from the game disc....to my pc myself. And believe me I've looked around alot for that :09 sec test vid of Raiden.

I don't know if your program has similar options as mine, but take a look at the screen shot in my first post. The red/white outlines indicate the options I toyed around with to get that QueenSindel(TB) sig to look as good as it could. One of the major changes I made to it, is changing the regular 256pixelation, to a "Line Art 256pixelation". That helped alot along with reducing the amount of items in the gif, and the amount of frames....there's a balance between them appearently. There's some other little stuff that just came with the territory too..
Point is, I had to make the picture itself "hollow" enough, and then "simplify" the animation more without taking the good stuff out of the picture. That equillibrium was of moderate difficulty considering the Sindel Sprite flying aroung in the background(lotta frames to make that happen for me).
But yea, try something like that and show us what happends..

Yea no, I'm not limited to the gifs, I'm really trying to gauge my capability to how much//far I'm interested....could lead to school//business somewhere in the future. Picture manipulation already has..

I gotcha. Had to find out the hard way though. I tried "tighting up" some images before I import them into Ulead....nope. lol

So let's see...new question.....hmm...
1. Anybody know anything about Flash? Any interpretation or opinion of it is fine, I found a "definition" Here.
I don't have a clue of how it works(lol), I just know you can manipulate animations within it.
What are the programs you need, files you upload as (aVi)
2. Another thing I wanna know while I'm talking about Flash, is if I make my sprite animation with Ulead, is it a difficult process to import that data into the "Flash Video Creator"? Is it even nessasary?
Looking for ways around the 256pixel deficiency thing in Ulead. You think that would help or solve the pixel problem?

Basic question or two about Sprite manipulation,
3. What makes a good sprite edit?
4. What's an efficient way of "re-drawing" parts of a sprite that never exactly existed? Is this feasible?
