Fake: Noon Shodown (My contest entry)

A simple scene of a wandering monk, and samurai fighting somewhere in Earthrealm. The monk was standing on the wall, and the samurai sliced him off his feet, causing him to drop his deer horn knives. I didn't have much time to work on it, as my step cousin was living with us at the time, and he wasn't to know we had the internet. Plus I ended up beating Scarface: TWiY (PS2) with him for a week or two...

The monk is a head edit of my generic monks. The samurai was made especially for the contest. I was trying to keep the MK feel, with some fresh elements. The stage can be better appreciated in it's full form: here.

A lot of the props in your background have terrible quality on them. It's obvouisly taken straight from the MK Warehouse and you didn't seem to put much editing into it so it looked "smooth." (the statue for example)

I'm not a big fan of that "almost bad" guy. He looks to be TRYING to do Fujin's knee rise move from MK4. I like the addition of a weapon.

The samurai/raiden guy looks pretty cool though. But I would have done something with the colors to make a better outfit for the guy.

I wish more was done with the sprites (action wise) so it didn't look so bland. Okay, he was on the wall and his feet were sliced... it's hard to tell without your explanation. I would have chosen different sprite positions to make it look better and clearer.

Ha! I knew that wasn't meant to be Raiden smile Great job using Shao Khan's armour to construct the samurai's. It looks so much better when done right on Paint than it does on PS. Both sprites fit the MK feel to the point where I see this as part of a story that happened before MK1 (side-scroller spinoff, anyone?)

I saw the severed foot when you submitted this to the contest but I didn't really get what was going on, which is a downer cos the rest of this fake is so great to look at.

Nothing else to point out, the background is great.

Props taken straight from the MK warehouse or not, beautiful use of them to create a compelling BG. Authenticity is key IMO. However this concept is too complicated for a viewer w/o explanation to understand. I'd love to see a new fake scenario made from this BG.

I think you did good with most of your editing like the rest said your shao kahn armor edit is good i just think a little more of a dynamic pose would have made it better what mean is like your monk falling in peices would have been alot cooler.Your b.g statue looks out of place a little tho ,but nice B.G anyway, good job for having no time!
Thanks.

I'm not sure what you mean by "smooth" BS. I know MK1 props are a little blurry compared to MKII+...

I kinda screwed myself over trying to be too original. I toyed with a few decap scenarios, torso slice, etc(with the same sprites/bg), but figured they'd be too obvious, and overused. So I decided to do something different, something small, knowing full well most people just glance at a pic, and either bash it or whore out 10/5s.

Fed, that's what I was going for.

Anti-aliasing (like the edges of the mountains and a lot of other props in the BG) and getting rid of obvious pixels that stand out (in the statue and in the sky for example).
Don't get me wrong, the design is good... but I'm kind of distracted by those things. I would have alos added a small hint of a shoreline on the other side of the river/lake. But that's being too picky.
Ah, right. Gotcha.

It's an interesting picture overall to me. The colors and the characters in it are intriguing.

Wow, I so didn't get this fake until you explained it. I just thought the monk was jumping. I had no idea that his feet were even cut off. That is one of my biggest beefs with fakes though, not knowing what is going on without text to explain it.

The edits are good, but the samurai has too many parts not to be mistaken as Raiden.

Still a solid fake, and the full background is very nice aside from the pixelated quality of some of the props from older games.

I love the sprite edits, and the weapons of course... they are ur specialty after all
I gotta say tho its not clear what goes on and it does look a bit messy.. and the BG is kinda rough... altho very inventive...
and some details are lacking, like shadows, and i dont say that for the characters, but actually cause of that statue... since its so close to the wall it has to cast a shadow either on the wall or the floor... so i looked at it for a while thinking it looked a bit awkward, and i realized the lack of shadow makes it look 2-D.

Overall... a lot of talent of course but you can tell the problem was time...

Pretty decent. The entire fake has an "old school" theme to it.
