I'm working on a little writing project and I'm stuck on something so I thought I'd take a poll.

Which of the following would you like better as a motivation for Sonya's vendetta with Kano?

Kano killed her...

A) Partner (as per the movie)
B) Same as A, but the partner was also her fianceé (as per MK1 trading card set)
C) Brother (Since her MK1 bio lists a dead brother)
D) Father (A variation on her MK9 story)

I'm leaning towards using D personally, because I think I could be interesting to also say her dad was Jax's commanding officer or partner when he was a rookie in the SF...but I'm curious to see if "tradition" will win out and A or B will be the winner.

If you're leaning towards D already I would go with that. Me, I always kind of went for A. Her vendetta always seemed to me like it was potrayed (or at least intended to be) as more than "just business" but I can't see her being engaged to someone from her unit. Also if it was her newly late fiance it makes Johnny come off as a lot less sympathetic. We're supposed to be rooting for that lovable douchebag to get her, right?

Here's an idea for you. Now that Kano has been retconned as a Special Forces mole...what if HE was her partner?

wow

"Gullible bitch! So...how are things at command? grin"

hmmmm

It's an adaptation of the original timeline, Hsu Hao is the mole.
As for Johnny, I figured the dead partner/fiancee, if that's what it ended up being, would've happened a few years before the tournament, enough time that it'd explain why she's so bitter and resistant to his advances but at the same time, she's overdue to let the wound heal and he'd be what she needed once he realized the seriousness of the situation and started acting more sensitive and mature, if any of that makes sense.

Nah that makes perfect sense actually. I just always kinda visualized her partner's death as a semi-recent event...but then there's nothing in canon about that.

I'd say A. I've never liked the whole "fiancé" idea, but I like the idea of Sonya having a tight bond with her partner that only partners can have. The only other person Sonya trusted, killed by the man she hates the most and is now dedicated to hunt down and kill, now only trusting herself to do so - of course until Jax steps in and proves to her that he is trustworthy as well.

If the partner is also her fiancé, she would just be a female Scorpion, more or less... As with the new thing about her father being the victim, well, it makes sense, but it's not something I find necessary...

Go with A,because I think D is not the option.Isn't it stated in her bio that the reason she went to Army is because her father was Marine and she wanted to honor his memory?

I think fiancee is too much, because a normal military person will not make a close relationship with his partner cuz that will interfere with her job. I think Sonya is intelligent enough to understand that.

Anyways, can't wait for your work to be complete. Are you writing some kind of retelling of original timeline? Because I clearly remember you planning to do that a long time ago...

Yes, her father is supposedly her inspiration for joining the military. Which is actually why I thought having him be the one Kano kills would fit well enough, since Sonya's reasons for wanting to be on the Black Dragon hunting unit and get Kano are obviously very intense and personal, but the old games never specified why.

As a side note, what division Sonya is in and her father was in is...inconsistent. Originally, they were Army. MK9 says they're Marines. But the Special Forces is an ARMY division, so Marines makes no damn sense. I'm going with them both being army.

Her MK1 bio said that her father's name was "Major Herman Blade" (it also lists him as alive rather than deceased and lists a twin brother named Daniel Blade as dead, but clearly retcons abound.) Major is the same rank Jax holds now, so I just thought it might be interesting to suggest he led the SF before Jax did, but died because of the Black Dragon, inspiring her to join that unit and want to hunt down the Black Dragons herself.

I dunno, it just being a partner seems so impersonal to me, I can't see much drama in it, the way I could see her relationship with Johnny being more difficult if she lost a lover, or the way I could see her motive for joining the Special Forces being stronger if her brother or father served in the same unit before her and died trying to bring down the Black Dragons. And in the latter two, I can tie in Jax since he obviously hates Kano enough to punch the dude's eyeball out, so why not say he lost a partner or C.O.?

Another question for me is why NRS didn't give her Bicycle Kicks? I know it is in her X-Ray,but what maybe it was just Liu Kang didn't have time to teach her this technique? I know I sound crazy, but I wish NRS thinks sometimes in this angle too,I mean, not just gameplay-wise,but also story-wise.

I like that her Bike Kicks were moved to the X-Ray, personally. Same with Johnny's Shadow Uppercut being his breaker and the end of an Enhanced move instead of a regular. Spreading out characters' famous moves into different forms instead of them having them all as regulars is more creative to me.
The thread isn't really for multiple questions, though, and it's certainly not about MK9 gameplay. There's already a general Sonya thread a few topics down the page, so I'd appreciate if we just stuck solely to the question in the first post, because that's why I made it and so far I haven't really gotten enough answers for a consensus.

I think this is the place where Queve and Leo should answer your question as the biggest fans of Sonya on MKO grin

I'll go with A. I think it would also be cool if her father disappeared pursuing the black dragon while all his men ended up dead. Maybe that could be an exuse for her not wanting to simply kill Kano on the spot; she wants to know what happened to her father. Just an idea, but I'd go with A overall.

I'd go with D.

I like the idea that she might have been some kind of army brat. Almost inherently influenced to be a hard-ass based on pure personal experience as that little army girl ("the generals daughter" complex), and deep love for her father.

Also, not that this motivation couldn't come from someone else but, fathers for little girls (daddy's little girl) are hard influences for them once they become grown women. The lack of that influence in her life after his death could trigger her to only deal with men by necessity only, or on an authoritative basis only. Depending on how soon in her life Kano kills him... But, she should have trouble with men being "weak" in her opinion, in general. None of them stack up to the man that her father was....etc.

At the same time, it could merit creating the "opposites attract" chemistry she has with Cage despite their personalities being completely different from one another.

Also, I think this kind of thing sets her up to have seen extremes already. Having already dealt with extreme situations could make her an attractive pick for an earthrealm warrior to Raiden. As a child, she might have also been exposed to something supernatural, but never realized or understood it as such because she was so immersed already. The "normal" kind of "exciting" doesn't "move" this Sonya so....she's ready for the shitstorm that is Mortal Kombat.

That's what I think...
