We're finally at this point, aren't we..?
Honestly, I have a lot of faith in Kittelsen. It's fair to say that over the last several months, he has earned the trust of the entire community. So far, he's proven to be both capable and respectful of the series lore.
But the territory we're at now is not just any lore.
It's Mythologies.
Tobias' love child. Probably the last thing he ever wrote to his full writing capacity, without cutting any corners like he was forced to with the projects that followed.
Y'know, I've said it before, but it really bears repeating now - a few times a year, I go back and reread the
backstory of Mythologies that Tobias put so much care and effort into. There's so much of it that even when typed in what's basically fine print, it still takes up half of the manual that comes with the game, and the editor STILL couldn't make all of it fit. Some of the choice bits could only be found on the official website, which is long since gone. Thankfully, we do have the archive for the time being.
I do this because when I read it, it makes me remember just how GOOD MK can be, how rich and developed the universe is, and how much potential the story and the characters have.
And every time, it rekindles my passion for the franchise and reminds me why I love it so much.
And now we're at a point when the reboot continuity is going to start fucking with this lore. The lore that is, to me, sacrosanct.
So yeah, I'm not sure how to feel about this.
I wouldn't worry about it - it definitely seems like these are false memories. In fact, it was because the memories were skewed that he was able to escape Fox's trap in the first issue...he knew that that was not what occurred on the day of his death..if only because the demon's manipulation put dialog to Sub-Zero that he and Scorpion never actually exchanged.
I don't think they're changing that lore - remember, EVERYTHING leading up to the beginning of MK9 is still canon, so nothing should have been changed from Mythologies. I think that Quan Chi skewed Scorpion's memories when he transformed him into a spectre in order to make him more effective. Sub-Zero even reacted in such a way as to indicate that he was shocked at the claims Quan Chi was making after Scorpion defeated him in the Netherrealm.
The same could be said of Bi Han when he became a wraith - his loyalties and memories were skewed. It made him a more efficient and reliable killer for Quan Chi.
