I'll drop my 2 cents in here. The costume changes reflect more realistic wear. If you were in weaponry combat you would have armor and not want to show any openings. Yes, previous MKs shown skin. But that was the whole era of the 90s. Today the tech is better. Characters look and feel more real, and because of that, the characters also have realistic personalities. The princess of Edenia wouldn't dress scantily. Shed be a warrior, dressed for combat. Yes, society and things change. I'm glad the female characters have more visual persona and show less skin. It makes them more interesting.

If skin is what you like, let me introduce you to the DOA series to your left....

Now I understand this is a "heated" topic, but the staff is monitoring it so please, show respect to everyone else, even if their opinions are different. We are all an MK fam. Let's continue with that respect. ;)

I've made some edits on this thread, and while I'm hardly a full time moderator, some of the things on this thread have been absolutely awful.

Let me be clear here:

NOBODY at ANY time should be calling others derogatory names on this forum. I'm moderating here the very best that I can, while working on Fatal Fridays for you all on the Twitch stream, but after briefly scanning through earlier messages, wow. Guys, gals: Tone it down a bit here. Passion is great, it's fine. Calling others names, making personal attacks? Woah woah there. Now, no bans were handed out, but going forward: No name calling, no personal attacks. We're all a community and while yes, absolutely debate passionately, don't go attacking others here. That isn't the intent of the forum or the site, or what I build for our Twitch platform.

I'm going to make more of an effort to check up on these forums, and while I'm the last guy who wants to hand anyone the "B" (ban), please understand that if I have to, I will.

So please, be cool my friends.

I haven’t said anything hateful about anyone. All I said was “Thank you.” But out of curiosity, where was this same energy in the past when I left this site for a few years because I was sexually harassed by one of the members here who publicly made anal sex insults towards me or do you guys just pick and choose when to take action? I don’t recall you editing that person’s comments too.

Welp, I wasn't a moderator then. And now, I am. So, can't speak to that. I'm more of the Twitch guy, but alas, if I do see something out of line, I'll gladly jump on it. If anyone ever needs anything, you can always hit the little "Report" icon on the bottom right of the message, and we'll be happy to take a look at said things and make decisions.

That being said, now that you know....

Be kind. :)

And as I just said, I wasn’t unkind to anyone. You pretty much made a bad call by insinuating that I did and you’re not willing to own up to it. That’s usually how it goes with people in power. But whatever.

Precisely. You quoted and seemingly agreed with someone dropping the "C" bomb my dude. Normally that type of stuff is ban hammer material, and honestly, I'm not a power tripping mod and I don't enjoy banning people. So, instead of throwing out B's everywhere, I'm instead lightening the tone, while reminding people that the mods do exist on these forums and we are watching. Now, I feel like in most sites, this kind of topic would have been closed down. But, I'm all for leaving it opened up to converse. That's what makes MK Online different, we aren't going to censor opinions or ideas. However, when you start attacking an individual and jumping on a bandwagon to attack some one, that's where it's crossing the line.

You don't have to agree with Ahnka's viewpoints. However, you DO have to accept that yes, a sentient human being who lives and breathes may think differently than you. And that's OK. That's why there are debates, right? To throw everyone's ideas into the bowl. Just understand, you'll see all sorts of things in debates you won't agree with. But that doesn't mean that Ahnka is this bad person you need to attack.

Case in point: With things like Kombat Kon in existence, you never want to say something to someone you've never met when you may end up meeting them in real life at en event like that. You know? I've met a ton of folks I didn't agree with on opinions, and came to find out they're pretty rad people, and the reason their opinion was different than mine is because they faced different things in life than I did. You don't know why Ahnka has his or her views, or even why others may share yours. Everyone is different. Everyone has a completely interesting, one of a kind walk through life.

That doesn't make everyone right, but it doesn't make everyone wrong, either. You just call your side as you see it. That's fair. And hey, voice your opinions. Just don't go attacking other users.

That's all I'm asking. By all means, carry on with the topic and conversation. You'll come to find I'm not an "angry power hungry mod". I'm a chill guy who throws down a beer, and at the end of the day? All I want is all of you guys to be my friends who love what I love: Mortal Kombat.
I hope that clears things up. You are all great people. The last thing I want to ever do is hand someone a "B". But, hey, if we gotta do things that way, and it has to escalate, I guess that's the route we'll have to take. But I definitely don't want to take it that route. Now, you're always welcome to join in our Mortal Kombat Online twitch channel and chat with me there too. But please know, if you're ever being bullied or harassed or see something offensive, I'm doing a better job myself at looking at these things.

Now go in peace, have fun, and debate away, my friends. Just do so nicely.

It's as if people noticed her mechanical and stylistic aspects before anything else. You know, the way it should be. Since you want to talk more about costumes, if you think that costume is risque in any way, then there isn't a conversation to be had here. It's no more revealing than pretty much anything that was in MKX.

With every post that gets made in this thread, I wonder more and more why I wasted my time looking at it at all. We've done this dance for three games now and gotten nowhere.

Holy crap, I was just posting a link to an article and restating a couple points. I was one of those '90s kids who grew up to playing Mortal Kombat. GamePro, EGM and a couple other magazines then covered the topic if female sex appeal ALL the time, especially when Dead or Alive and Tomb Raider came out, just to name a few.

This thread should gave been closed a long time ago. There is almost no debating, just jabs. And thanks to the guy who attacked my work - any publicity is good publicity even when you somehow confused mudfighting with cage fighting... I don't recall writing books abojt mudfughting, just cage fighting, so I would like a page number, maybe one or two fights in my early drafts but not in anything bearing the "Girl Fight" title. I also publish magazines of models - most scantily-clad but many dressed in fashion at Girlfightmagazine.com. And I'm finishing a film with both covered and scanily clad women - it's called Girl Blood Sport on IMDB.com.

Now my two cents - based on both my experience in the girlfight genre (which has involved extensive research including interviewing women myself) and in the modeling industry. A lot of bisexual women embrace empowerment through sexuality so they prefer scantily-clad women AND men. Lesbians either embrace through sexuality aka sexual freedom/liberation or like their women to be empowering by offering strong, powerful abilities of their character.

As a bisexual male I find it hilarious people miss out on the sex appeal throughout the game and tv/movie franchise. In 1992, Sonya Blade's attire was more sexy and based alot of martial arts sex symbol Cynthia Rothrock from her movies at the time. But so wasn't Liu Kang, Johnny Cage... and Goro - their huge, sweaty, bulging muscles were HUGE sex appeal, this is called homoeroticism which also extends to professional wrestling and movies like Bloodsport and Kickboxer. Not to mention the large amounts of violence in Mortal Kombat is what is called blood lust and it's been around since the beginning of time, popularized in the ancient Roman gladiatorial fights. Yes they were armor but they were also very scantily clad. Then in 1993 MKII came out with Kitana/Mileena/Jade dressed in spandex. Spandex is considered largely sexy (by the way, military girls often wear standard tanktops and camo pants when they train hand to hand, not crop tops, like Sonya wore in all 3 of the original games. Kintaro, Jax, and Johnny Cage brought the sex appeal again - very muscular, flexible, sweaty, and shirtless. Kano's sex appeal comes from the bad-boy archetype. And ninjas and masks were also... and especially gas masks with female models... considered very sexy. Now on to MK3. Here the sex appeal REALLY comes to recognition. Remember the Ultimate Guide to Mortal Kombat CD-ROM ? One of the video clips included that Sonya working out in her Sonya gear... now

Spandex is considered largely sexy (by the way, military girls often wear standard tanktops and camo pants when they train hand to hand, a lot like Bridgette Wilson's Sonya - not crop tops, like Sonya wore in all 3 of the original games). Females in video games weren't given much special attention until the mid-90s when sex appeal became apparent. Now on to MK3. Here the sex appeal REALLY comes to recognition. Remember the Ultimate Guide to Mortal Kombat CD-ROM ? One of the video clips included that Sonya working out in her Sonya gear... now why would they include that... hint... it wasn't to show us how to work out. At this time we were also introduced to Sheeva and Sindel. Guess what MK3 Sindel wore in the game AND MK Annihilation, pretty much. Skin-tight clothes... a leotard in the movie and what is now called a Slingshot bikini in MK3. She was practically naked... Sindel wore a corset which has its own level of sex appeal... as well as history in feminist looks.

Now in MK4-MK8 there were some scantily-clad girls introduced just review MK Warehouse for some of those renders.

But MK fans got the most sex appeal in Mortal Kombat Conquest. No one bitched then. And no one bitched when Sheeva showed up in her slingshot bikini in the kid-targeted Defenders of the Realm. Not to mention the movie's Kitana, Mileena, and gasp- Jade's half-naked look for most of that movie. Oh... and one of the original girls cast in the movie as Sonya Blade was a Playboy model. I believe Kerri Hoskins was also a Playboy model before going to MK3 and it was widely hyped to promote MK3 along with her sex appeal. Bridgette Wilson's Playboy photos came after and were not nude.

Now we see Cetrion revealed and it seems we have lost the 'fans' claiming the fan base didn't want the sex appeal or the article I shared where it was talked you don't show up to a fight in a bikini - there is a reason I said the article was political and her scantily-clad reveal proved my point.

In summary, sex appeal has ALWAYS been in Mortal Kombat. It started out homoeroticising males because that was the thing during that time. In the mid-90s video games started sexualizing females - Tomb Raider (GamePro loved showing her off in a bikini) and several MK kombatants. People took notice and both males and females were bitching on BOTH sides. MK9 was notable for giving the girls pornstar appearances, not stripper (I'd hate to go to the strip clubs you guys have been too, damn, thats a lot of eye-poking) AND NRS even, officially, cross-promoted the game with... PLAYBOY, so that was on NRS.
MKX had some scantily clad females and now it appears MK11 is saving that for their new elder god despite she resembles a lot like The Temptress from Suicide Squad, who at times was very scantily-clad in the PG-13 film. The sex appeal may bd controversial but NRS decided to use it, in 2011, along with graphic violence and brutality to jumpstart what was then a dying franchise.

Get over it.

The game itself can't really be taken too seriously anyway since we got moves that are blatantly fatal like getting stabbed through the head and the fight still going. And Johnny getting bopped in the head from a mic.

So why not just have the option to dress in skimpy outfits through the gear system? Have them wear a serious outfit for story but dress them whatever for other modes.

Also I can't take young Johnny seriously since he's walking around shirtless entering a gunfight. You'd think his future self would at least give him a vest. I'll accept his lack of protection if he at least acknowledges it. "Woah, woah, woah. A vest will ruin the look."

^ Well, considering how many of us in this thread have been calling double standards, I would hope so. Fair is fair and the very last thing I’d want to be is a hypocrit.

Actually I think this is a fantastic idea. This way everyone’s happy and there’s no more need for any of this crap to go on any longer. Do this NRS, please. It’s a perfectly reasonable way to take your new stance on the subject while at the same time keeping the other side happy too.

If the more revealing/sexy (and no I don’t mean MK9 level of sexy... that was too much. MKX had a good balance) stuff is optional then anyone who is cool with the new designs can keep using them and don’t have to touch the optional stuff. Perfect compromise.

*edit* Quoted the wrong post... wtf?! Meant the one just above mine.

Why has been toned down? Well i think its about big organisations like warner bros and sony that censor their art. There was even video with injustice 2 where one person of their character design team was posting early designs of catwoman and black canary which he explained how they were changed because of censorship. Which leads to the real problem that artists cant even express their art freely.I remember when mk9 come out i was still in high school and it blew my mind.I was not even fighting game player or fan but their designs were so good. Then after mk9 they switch 360 degrees which is really strange. When even before mk9 they had sexy designs.I think that nrs are also going away from their roots. For me the mortal kombat game series are like made with the idea to break rules, norms and to not bow down to trends. But with how they changed their female characters to be more "realistic" and covered i am not feeling them on this.

I don't really want to introduce myself this way but hi I'm a bisexual woman, and I personally love the over the top MK9 female outfits AND I like the MK11 designs too. I'm aware that most fans didn't really like MK9's outfits for the female characters; hell I used to lurk on MKO a lot around the time MK9 was being marketed and I remember all the backlash said outfits were getting. So I wasn't surprised to see NRS change their tune starting with MKX and not go for designs like that anymore.

But still, I'm starting to get annoyed seeing a lot of people assume that if you want more "revealing" outfits in MK11 then you just want MK9 style outfits (and that you're an incel or virgin dude or whatever generalization). That's not really the case, I couldn't care less if we never got MK9 type designs ever again. I think a lot of fans like myself are just noticing there's a bit of a double standard with the male and female designs in 11 though. And it should be okay for both male and female characters to show more skin, like why not lol

I guess I just think it's kinda dumb that characters like Goro or Shao Kahn probably have some of the most revealing outfits in the entire series and that's perfectly okay, but now the women can't show much skin at all I guess? But it's still okay for the male characters to?

Anyway, I'm perfectly fine with the modest approach for female designs in MK11 but man I won't lie I'd really love to see some more diversity in their designs, and it shouldn't be looked down upon for women to show some skin.

(just want to add a side comment, this is my first post on MKO, I've been a fan of this site since I was like 13 but was always too shy to post here lol I'll try to post more often)

"Why is everyone so up in arms about the female characters showing less skin?"

"It's not about showing skin. We only care about diversity in designs."

"Okay. What do you mean by 'diversity in designs?'"

"The girls need to have costumes that show more skin."

"...?"

"You know. So they'll have more sex appeal. The guys get to be sexy. It's a double standard."

"You don't think Jade and Skarlet are sexy anymore, just because they're wearing more clothes? Are they not still flirty, suggestive, and conventionally attractive, wearing skin-tight suits to highlight their shapes? What about Sonya's classic outfit? Or Kitana?"

"But the double standards! The guys are so revealing! We wanted sexy girls and sexy guys."

"I don't remember so many people getting this upset when Liu Kang actually put on clothes in MKX. People only complain when it's about the women. Why?"

"They caved to the pressure! They refuse to let any of the girls be sexy! Censorship! Doub--"

"Hey look, it's Cetrion. An earth goddess dressed to look like an earth goddess, while the royal assassins and military officers get to dress like those things. Does this satisfy your craving for diversity?"

"Nope. Still gonna argue. Nobody's naked until everybody's naked."

"Fine. Whatever. You can have this planet." *returns to the stars*
